Kevin might be an advanced human from the future sent back to show us our potential. Or Kevin could be the DaVinci of our time. Kevin is such a true genius and a musical genius. He has so many talents in him I can't believe he hasn't self-combusted. Can play multiple instruments, sing, beatbox, write, compose, speaks multiple languages, perfect pitch, as if that wasn't enough, he was pre-med at Yale. He is also a humble and wonderful human. Maybe when he is done making music, he can cure cancer and broker world peace.

I wouldn't doubt it for a minute. Those instruments he can play include (at least) cello (in a master class with Yo-Yo Ma); piano; and saxophone (at Carnegie Hall). The languages include (at least) Mandarin and Spanish. Composes music, writes songs, loops (one-man choir and orchestra). Never considered himself a singer but took a couple of voice lessons from Avi and Mitch and mastered that skill, too. Beatbox, cello-box, rap? Why not? I had the privilege of spending an afternoon and evening with his mom and sister when they visited my country, and those two remarkable professional women think Kevin's the greatest. (Moms are like that, but if your sister has nothing but good to say about you, you are, indeed, a unicorn!) He's a husband and a daddy (can you picture having Kevin Olusola as your dad?). And he also preaches the Gospel.

Still might be my favorite original of theirs. There is no way you can be in a bad mood after hearing this. Several celebrity cameos in this. The skating rink that they were in is where Avi worked his first job. They did ask fans to submit videos and meet them at the pier. I don't think they were expecting that many.....

PTX asked their fans to send them videos and among the videos they received were those from the famous people you saw. They are all fans of the group. Tyler Oakley is friends with them. There are several collabs between him and Superfruit. Maisie Williams was also on an episode of Superfruit and she seemed totally starstruck. And there's Nick Lachey who was the host of The Sing-Off where PTX got their start.

PopSpring 2016 is literally my favorite Pentatonix video out of more than 200 I still prefer that over all others. It has 3 originals and the evolution of Michael Jackson. The 2nd song on that video is Can’t Sleep Love which is hands down my favorite (I like the official video for it, BUT, this version is the BEST) the epic Mitch slap is the best in this version.

The list of names at the end are their Patreon $50 tier patrons that they have a restricted number of slots for. They’ve done this song live on tv for a few appearances. I especially remember a children’s award show from around 2018 or so where they appeared with a huge children’s choir. It’s also been heard on regular ads for various tv shows and I also heard it on an American Idol audition episode as background music. It was also transformed into the opening theme for NBC’s Thursday Night Football in 2016, with PTX performing it in the opening every week.

The last scene was shot on one of the famous piers in LA. PTX announced to their patrons that they would be filming there at a certain day and time, and if the fans wanted to be in the video, just show up. So the fans did! For originals I would recommend Popspring 2016, where they performed a concert of 3 original songs, and their Evolution of Michael Jackson medley - all in front of a live audience in Japan (where they have a huge following). The video was shot and broadcast by MTV Japan, so the audio and video quality are excellent. Their originals are so, so, so good. They sang this live at the Hollywood Bowl concert in September. I feel like this is one of their most iconic originals because it is about their love for singing. When they sing "let me hear you sing," they mean it. They encourage other singers whether they are amateur, professional, and even if the singer isn't gifted, they are just happy to hear people sing. I suggest "Can't Sleep Love" (there is an official video, but the live version on Popspring 2016 is better), "Happy Now," and "Coffee in Bed," as originals you might like. A lot of my favorites from the entire band don't have a video, like "Ref," "Water" (which is on the Popspring 2016 live recording), "Bored," "Exit Signs," "Side," "It's Different Now," and "Anchor," among many others. I made a play list of just PTX originals, including solo originals by Superfruit, Avi, Kirstin, Kevin, Mitch (as Messer) and Scott, (so far I don't find any Matt originals, but I am sure there will be some). I keep adding to the list as I find more. So far there are 73 songs in the playlist (and I am certain it isn't complete, yet). There isn't a bad one among them.

This song was MADE for singing in the car. I belt this out with sound cranked up all the time. Sometimes I use it to get me pumped if I have things I have to do and am just not feeling it. Kevin can do SO much more. Did you know he's a graduate of the Yale medical school? He's also fluent in Mandarin and had played Carnegie Hall twice before hooking up with Pentatonix. Once as a solo cellist and once as a solo saxophonist. He's also a music producer and a devout Christian. You need to check out Kevin's solo work, particularly 'Down' by Marian Hill.

I think you'd appreciate that Avi, on his US/Canada tour that ended about a month ago, put out IG and TikTok messages in advance to have fans audition live with him doing the second part of the duet he did with Grammy winner Joy Williams of the song they co-wrote, "All Is Well". The purpose of the online duet audition was for him to choose a person in each area he would be performing to come onstage and sing Joy's part in the song (along with Avi's bandmate Kaleb Jones). It was a great PR move too, giving the crowd in each city a hometown singer to cheer on, let alone that lucky person being able to sing with Avi. There are some audience videos out there on YT of such performances. Avi loves involving his audiences (as does PTX, of course).

From their newer works, 'Happy Now' is an original that is similar in energy to this song, and is probably the most popular song from their second original album. Also 'Love me when I don't' is another original from that album and interestingly the music video for this is all live from one take, but the video overlaps many takes for simple yet enjoyable viewing.

I think you'd enjoy watching one of the live feeds of "Kevin's Fifth." They start with Scott introducing Kevin and telling how they found him, then Kevin demonstrates his celloboxing, gets Matt to do some drumming, and does a dance with Cost and Mayor (the dancers who traveled and performed with them during their 2022 Christmas tour - they also appeared in the official PTX video of "Kid on Christmas"). Also, look for Kevin's KOver of "Down," by Marian Hill. He does a lot of looping, demonstrates his beautiful singing voice, and then does something reminiscent of Mitch in "Bohemian Rhapsody." I won't say more because I don't want to spoil it.

They're more Hollywood nowadays than back then. Back then, they would have melted into that crowd of people and anyone who didn't know them wouldn't have been able to tell. Nowadays, they look like the celebs they are. Doesn't change their voices or their talent, though. Still more talented than most other American singers, imo.

Today Show co-host Hoda Kotb was a big Pentatonix fan and appears in the "Sing" video. In October 2015, Pentatonix spent the whole morning on the Today show and performed 3 originals from the "Pentatonix" originals album: "Can't Sleep Love", "Misbehavin" and "Cracked". The hosts talked about Hoda spending hours learning "Sing", practicing lip synching and recording herself to send to Pentatonix and then only appearing for about 2 seconds. "What'd she throw?" That's called a "rifle". It's actually just a wooden representation of one. They're used in color guards in high school marching bands or in drum and bugle corps. I used to be on the rifle line in my high school's color guard. My proudest moment, despite it actually being a mistake, was the one time in competition where there was a part of the performance where the rifle line stood in...well, a line...one after the other, then we'd stop and do a quad toss (toss the spinning rifle in the air high enough for it to spin four times before you catch it). However, I got overexcited and tossed mine a little too hard so it spun *five* times. HOWEVER, I still managed to catch it just right, and since I was in the middle of the line, it almost looked like mine was supposed to go a little higher than everyone else's. I was just happy I caught it perfectly, because that sort of thing can throw you off and you miss the catch. There are also things we call sabres, which are replicas like the rifles, but they're metal and...I hated having to use them, which is why I preferred the rifle line. The metal "blades" might be blunt as hell, but they're still solid metal, and even with gloves they hurt like hell to catch. (This is a video to show you what I'm talking about. Idk if anyone told you in the comments already, but a few of the celebs in the vid have been on Sup3rfruit (Macey, Tyler, and I think Grace was). This is such a feel good song of theirs, it's so good for getting you pumped up (as is As is Can't Hold Us) . There are a couple songs with rapping in from various members (I think Avi is the only one who never did a rap): - Thrift Shop, - As Long As You Love Me/Wide Awake (which is a phenomenal upgrade mash up), - Problem, - Can't Hold Us, - Can't Sleep Love (but not the studio version, the Popspring 2016 concert version - that whole concert is great, highly recommended), -Butter x Dynamite. -Last, but not definitely not least... Sup3rfruit's epic Feeling Myself. And yes, they have some amazing originals too, not all have a video (like Anchor & Petals), sadly, but they'll melt your brain.

Pentatonix has originals on most of their albums, but there are two albums where almost all songs are originals -- "Pentatonix" (2015) and "The Lucky Ones" (2021). All PTX members have written original songs for the group, usually collaborating with other PTX members and most originals also have experienced pop songwriters/ producers as co-writers. The 2021 album experimented with vocal editing / effects and occasional instruments / synths to achieve current pop styles. There are live recordings of some originals, many with not-so-good quality. Good live videos include the 2016 PopSpring set with 3 originals and the 2022 Hollywood Bowl concert.
