This was a suprise hit at the time and went to number two in the UK charts. They all kept quiet that Golden Brown was heroin. Just two of the guys played on the record. Mesmerising and clever. Many know it in the UK, but perhaps not the artist. The Stranglers are still just about going after almost 50 years, but founder member Jet Black recently died.

Yes, this is The Stranglers, but this isn't The Stranglers! I love this song, but it's not really typical of their usual sound. I think you'd love their other stuff too 🤗

I think the band were supposed to be like automotons/ robots. another stranglers track thats good is, Peaches. Superb bassline. Better not think whats on my mind. :o

This was one of those rare songs that went against the current music grain, but still became a hit at the time. I love this song. Please check out "Vienna" by Ultravox, for the same reason. IMHO these songs are truly hits when they become hits despite their "opposite" genre and style. Maybe "Video Killed The Radio Star" by The Buggles is also in the same category.

Hugh Cornwell (the singer) pulled out his poshest accent to get last to rhyme with mast. Funny that you thought it was odd. Britain does odd very well.

Great choice Dave. I loved this 'back in the day', and still do, but I've never seen this video! It was almost shockingly different for them and the time. Ah yes. I remember the first time I heard/saw this. A Saturday morning, 1982. On Sounds, Donnie Sutherland introduced it, claiming it was about whiskey. (Reader, it was not about whiskey.)

It's rare for a genuine hit song to get all its information out of the way in the first 90 seconds, leaving the rest of the track to be "developments of themes". I'd be slacking if I didn't mention a certain improbably successful Jamelia hit based on the riffs and chord-changes of Golden Brown (albeit in 6-8 time). The pre-1990 Stranglers catalogue is well worth a deep dive (which is why one of my channels has themed Stranglers playlists).

I'm sorry, but it is a 'trippy song' about a substance, but in 1982, that reference was obscure. It's still a beautiful song to listen to. You don't need drugs to appreciate it. Thanks for you appreciation. Good music is good music.

There was a history of the band and they were kind of out of the current time music and the pulled this one out and blew minds... Its about Heroin and mixing the drug with rat poison and made it brown etc.. Perfect for the time in their career being kind of behind the times at the time.. Very interesting story behind it.. Grew up in the those times and never heard this one when it came out I was 15

Yeah, was written from an addicts POV about a popular form of heroin coming out of Asia at the time. It's a well crafted song though and who knows what songs are written about what at the end of the day? I say just enjoy the track if it's enjoyable.

Back in the 80's, some kid at school used to sing this song at the top of his voice, with different lyrics. It totally ruined this song for me, because all I can hear in my head is his, lets say his distasteful rendition. :(

Not really a punk person, but this is a favourite of mine. The harpsichord makes it sound a little medieval, almost as if it's Henry VIII's court musicians who wrote it. Great !

I'm an old dude, like you. Listened to music all my life, almost all genres. This might be the most perfect song for me. I mean, the one i would play the aliens, to explain beautiful music.. Not a stranglers fan per say b.t.w.
