I loved this song since I was a child. Don´t know what it is about it that caught my attention back then, but it never gets old for me. I´ve always been interested in songs that sticks out from the rest.

Love the Stranglers, first gig I ever went to 1978 in the legendary Glasgow Apollo the Stranglers supported by very excellent the Skids ( the saints are coming), I was 14 years old, you should review some of the Stranglers early stuff, RIP Dave Greenfield and RIP Stuart Adamson.

Great pick Greg. I like the interesting time signature. It feels like a waltz but it's not. Great conversation afterwards. You listed some other of my favorite songs, but for some of the songs with more an Doors feeling to them, I recommend "Toiler By The Sea", "No More Heroes", "Down In The Sewer", and their cover of "Walk On By" (yes, the Burt Bacharach number, but the make it theirs). Great work!

The best song about heroin not by the Velvet Underground. Really recommend their cover of Walk On By -- Burt Bacharach meets The Doors in an acid nightmare.

Once, watching Good Morning America, I heard this familiar tune. They were introducing puppies available for adoption, and brought out a golden retriever with this tune. I instantly wanted to marry the producer of the show, male or female.

Great song from a great album which was mixed by Tony Visconti (T. Rex, David Bowie, Thin Lizzy ...). You could do lots of other songs from the album La Folie ! Try “Non Stop” (about a nun's love for God), "Everybody Loves You When You're Dead" (which is a reflection on how the media and the general public treat people after their death, and in this case it's about John Lennon), "Tramp" (according to Hugh Cornwell, it's about a mythical tramp who wants to travel), "Let Me Introduce You to the Family" (could be about Family ties as about mafia)..... You can even go back to the beginning of The Stranglers' recording career with tracks like "Sometimes", "Goodbye Toulouse", "Hanging Around", "Peaches", "(Get A) Grip (On Yourself)", "Ugly", "Down in the Sewer".......

The Stranglers were punk with as addition great keyboards played by the late Dave Greenfield (passed away in 2020). Legendary songs are No More Heroes, Nice 'n' Sleazy, Toiler On The Sea, Peaches and quiet some others. The song Down The Sewer of their first album is their Magnus Opus in my opinion... Anyways it's a fantastic band.
@lordofthehornets3238

Their label wanted to drop them as "Your singles aren''t selling" so they put this forward as the next one...Hit #2 in the charts LOL. Dave Greenfield wrote it in a few minutes in a pub after Hugh & JJ badgered him to write something. The Stranglers sat on it unsure what to do with it until the falling out with the record label so Hugh wrote the lyric about his experience with heroin as a "F**k you!" to the label. It is not pro or anti heroin, it's just how Hugh felt about the drug. Its about toast... :) Toiler On The Sea, the cover of Walk On By (the extended version), Down In The Sewer. Walk On By was included in their early set because "no one can dance to the shit you write". They made it their own. Burt Bacharach said it is his favourite cover of the classic.

I love this band. This song was climbing up the charts in the UK. Then one of the band members let it leak what the song was about, I think it got pulled right after that. Please do more, Skin Deep and Always the Sun are great. I love the "Dreamtime" album. Also, when you mentioned another song about Heroin, was it The Las' "The She Goes". Supposedly it too is about the drug. Great song, not a great drug...

"Golden Brown" is a fine song. All kinds of things of note about The Stranglers. Hugh Cornwell, guitar and voice until he left, was in high school with Richard Thompson, initially of Fairport Convention and then solo, and they played together in a band at that time. The Stranglers started as a pub rock band that evolved into punk in terms of attitude, but were all good musicians, unlike most of the Sex Pistols, etc. There very hard, rough and punk sounding albums that gradually shifted into another sound (although the bass tone is always impressive), but their attitude didn't really change. There was an infamous outdoor live show in 1978 (Peter Gabriel was the opening act) that landed them in some hot water - although the music was played really well. Songs from that show come and go on RU-vid. Also, check out the smoother sound (but with veiled power) of the live set of three songs from the UK TV show The Tube in 1983: "Midnight summer dream", "European Female", "Who Wants The World". My fave album of theirs is still The Raven. Saw them once on tour here in the early 1980s, and they were terrific. Have enjoyed Hugh Cornwell's non-Stranglers albums and a couple of live shows over the decades, too.

Loved the Stranglers. The bands set up is unique Hugh Cornwell lead vocals & rhythm guitar, Jet Black on drums, Dave Greenfield on Keys & Vocals and Jean-Jacques Burnel Bass & Vocals, NO Lead Guitar. The Bass is used like a lead Guitar along with the Keys in most songs giving their unique sound. Best Albums: Black & White, No More Heroes, The Raven and Rattus Norvegicus. Best Songs: Peaches, Ugly, Down in the Sewer, Something Better Change, No More Heroes, Tank, Nice 'N' Sleazy, In The Shadows, Dead Loss Angeles, Duchess, Hanging Around and so many more. 🐀🐾🐾🐾🐀

I watched The Stranglers in 1990 as a support act to Simple Minds at Maine Road, Manchester. This song was superb and is a classic. sadly they spent the rest of the set playing their new album which was really poor and eventually threatened to walk off stage due to the crowd reaction. Lesson, if you are a support act, play your best set.
