I love that you talked about Haake's syncopation and that his right hand is constantly hitting those quarter-notes. This is key for people who have a hard time grooving to Meshuggah. If you follow that steady cymbal pattern and let the rest of the accents dance around that beat, it's mesmerizing. This is common for most (not all) of their songs.

Yeah, most of their stuff is 4/4 and then Haake plays a 6/4 or 7/4 or whatever for that particular song over the top of it. Hell, some times he does 4/4 with his top or bottom half, then a different time with his other half. He's a machine.

djent was cast at the feet of Meshuggah (inspired by), they do not proclaim it so, and Meshuggah were part of a group of bands that did this at the time (90's) that lead to what some might call djent now (percussive polyrhythms) but the others are forgotten by the djent scene as they have likely never heard them. Meshuggah are the closest sonically to djent guitar parts, but they were part of a whole scene who pioneered that kind of playing long before djent (I think because Meshuggah used 7 extended range they get the credit, not saying they dont deserve it but there are many that are forgotten that payed a part more indirectly but, without them djent would not exist)

@@jonasthemovie The “djent” Meshuggah were talking about is the buzzing, choppy guitar-tone they wanted to achieve out of their kit. As in, an aesthetic for guitar tone only. It has nothing to do with the genre label popularized by Misha Mansoor, given to metalcore songs which spam open-notes on the guitar, basically playing it like a drum. It’s a very common misconception

I'd love to see your take on French Metal band Gojira! They are sometimes said to be one of the greatest metal bands ever even though they are somewhat "new" (started out in the late 90s but put out classics to this day). If you want to hear some good tracks by them I'd recommend "Silvera" or "L'enfant sauvage' for lighter listening and "The Heaviest Matter in the Universe", "Remembrance" or "Flying Whales" on the heavyer side.
