The album that this ended up becoming, "glow on" was one of my favorite releases of 2021. They just did an NPR tiny desk concert recently that was outstanding. Most of Glow On is on my playlist for my wedding coming up in July. I would HIGHLY recommend checking out their other albums "non stop feeling" and "step 2 rhythm" to really get a feeling for what the other side of their sound is like. they are one of the best to do it.
I love that everyone's reaction to hearing Turnstile for the first time is just shock, amazement, "WOAH" "UNGH!" "YEAH!" and "I need to show this to people"
I'm a 50 year old dude that's been into mostly punk and was just turned on to these guys last year; most excited I've been about a band in decades. Baltimore represent! BTW, the "Clockwork Orange" scene is Clifton Park in Baltimore...Turnstile played a benefit for the homeless there in Summer '21 to a gazillion people.
someone else will probably step in and say something similar but the turnstile love connection was an ep of songs that later ended up on glow on (an album which featured highly on a bunch of end of year lists for 2022) and they essentially made a video for the whole ep, starting with holiday, into no surprise, mystery (which was the opening track on glow on - as an aside, on a bunch of live shows they've been starting with no surprise into mystery and it has such a massive impact for a show opener) and tlc. stylistically you're right that there's a big new york hardcore/beastie boys influence and their earlier work leans more heavily into the nyhc stuff in particular, but on glow on they found a new level with production and their approach to songwriting where they had samba rhythms and some very heavily dream pop influenced elements. they've rightfully got so much attention off the back of glow on and in turn it's also massively helping the wider alt/hardcore scene as they've brought more eyes to that space in the music industry also, i've previously requested an every time i die reaction and i still think that'd be cool in the wake of them recently breaking up, but it could open the comments section to negativity and speculation, so instead i'm gonna throw in a recommendation to check out thrice, particularly something like black honey
also a small addition now that i've watched it all: • please keep pausing and talking, i only follow a handful of reaction channels and enjoy them because they talk about the songs from a songwriting/production/music theory perspective and i love hearing songs i love spoken about in a more technical way. i've found it's led to me enjoying some of my favourite bands and songs more because i have a deeper understanding of what's going on • i think you'd really enjoy quicksand, or any of walter schreifel's other work. i also think as far as genre fluidity goes you might also enjoy a band called refused. they released an album called the shape of punk to come back around 98 and apparently at the time it got slated because it had elements of electronic music and jazz in a hardcore album, but the legacy of that album has stood the test of time and i personally see it as a strong foundation for bands in and around the hardcore/punk genre to take more risks. the stand out track from the shape of punk to come is a track called new noise. great build, crunchy riffs, very interesting vocals, a really unexpected middle section into a truly explosive ending. musically i think it's quite straightforward in terms of riffs etc but it'd definitely be a cool one to check out if you're not familiar with them
Walter also produced the second full length record of the Pennsylvania Hardcore band Title Fight. The album is called Shed. It is one of my favorite works of music of all time. Not only should you listen to it in full. You should make a video of the music video for the title track She’d!
It’s crazy to hear a band that I grew up in all my twenties blow up and get so huge and get everyone’s attention. It’s like watching a friend reach their wildest dreams.
They just did an NPR Tiny Desk performance a couple weeks ago that is really awesome. Somehow they took this sound and were able to play it in a quieter setting without losing the true sound. Check it out
beastie boys started out as a hardcore punk band. so the beastie boys brought a lot influence of hardcore into their hip-hop music. Turnstile has a 90s style of hardcore and with that also influence from bands like the beastie boys. hardcore punk bands also like to cover beastie boys songs and from that you can clearly see the similarities the beastie boys and hardcore punk has.
Honestly the whole album is FIRE. Please do. Mystery is my favorite. Correction: this comment was before I finished watching, this music video actually has Mystery in it.
Ah man, when this EP was released - I completely lost my mind, it's beautiful. I hope you give the album a listen, I think you'll really enjoy it! Also, this was an easy subscription. Can't wait to go through the rest of your videos! You should also watch some of their live stuff, absolute parties.
As someone who plays bass, guitar and drums; I 100% agree that bass is the easiest. I also will say that it's a lot rarer to find a standout or special bassist than it is over a guitarist.
I'm so glad to see you checking out Turnstile. They are so good. Cool fact about the singer of this band is that he also played drums for the band Trapped Under Ice.
So happy you did this! Turnstile has that infectious sound that makes me want to turn up the volume and scream along while driving. They're INCREDIBLE live and can't wait to see them again. I'd recommend watching a video of Turnstile live, they bring so much energy and the crowd always goes crazy
Anything Turnstile gets my attention. I've had to watch about 10 of your vids in the last couple hours. I like the heavier artists that you covered. Great work, keep em coming
1st time here. love it! you're hilarious and insightful. definitely going to check out your library. I do like this cd, but their old stuff is where I listen the most.
Turnstile has been blowing the roof off of the MD, PA, DE, and NJ club scene for almost 10 years. Glow On is genuinely their magnum opus, it is every single vibe you would get at a Turnstile show, produced amazingly, and put together in a way that you can't help but call it ART.
Me 51 years old just discovered Turnstile a couple weeks ago on Oct 22nd because my son 25 years old told me they are the opening band for a Blink 182 show he is going to in Phoenix. He was home visiting and we played Turnstile at a haunted train we were working at. This band blew me away! And their past stuff is not to bad also. But this Glow On album put them up on a whole new level. And I would not call them Punk Hardcore, ya it’s there but what else are they? The way this album goes at 5mph to 80mph back to 5mph is what makes it special. And the replacement guitarist they have on tour Greg Cerwonka’s sound is like WOW. And because he is currently touring in Turnstle I find his band Take Offense is pretty good also. Now I know why the guitarist looks like he walked in from 80’s or 90’s hard rock band. I have not had a band hit me in the nuts like this in a long time. Maybe Greta van Fleet, but been a long time since them. And saw a few live shows on RU-vid and the crowd energy Turnstile has is amazing. Wish I would have discovered them sooner because they had a show at the Aragon Ballroom in Chicago on Oct 23rd. Little bit late to discover them on the 22nd. Great review by the way and people complain about everything nowadays. Might as well throw another band that put something out in 22, band called Turbo Lovers and their album called “Lettin it Fly”. Great for driving trust me.
Love your enthusiasm! My hardcore days are way behind me. One day I'm browsing RU-vid and came across this very same EP. I was blown away! Turnstile is such a breath of fresh air. They do it right
I haven't even finished this yet, but I have to say, you're a lot of fun to listen to. I always love to vibe out with other music nerds, listen to their opinions and go "well, akthually" in my head. But this video, being the first one I've seen from you, is really a lot of fun. Helps of course that I love Turnstile, but you also have a lot of charisma. And certainly know your crap as well.
Also if you don’t know and want a history lesson in hardcore from the band legacy of one Walter Schreifels, Listen to his first success, the Gorilla Buiscuits. Then check out Quicksand! After that checkout Rival Schools. All incredible!
Turnstile is so fucking dope. Their older stuff is a lot more traditional hardcore/punk but their last two albums they really started to experiment and it's been incredible. Turnstile deserves all the love
You should really check out Angel Du$t. Most of the members are actually from turnstile minus the singer who normally sings for Trapped Under Ice and the bassist. They’re very fun, hardcore punk with a bit of like acoustic folk vibes on the latest 2 albums.
So glad you mentioned the sound engineering. Glow On was the best recorded/mixed album I’ve heard in years. Every instrument has it’s own space but it’s all coherent.
This reaction / breakdown made my day! Just seeing your reaction to this not knowing this band or what to expect was so incredible! It reminded me again when I first listened to this album last year! Thank you so much for such amazing content!
I love punk and hardcore and i love Turnstile, but the reason i'm writing it's because this video is amazing, you are a pure enterteiner, keep pausing!
I don't know if this has been said already but this isn't actually one song but an ep of four songs holiday, no surprise, mystery, and tlc that was made to promote their album glow on. I loved your video still by the way
This album has become my favorite record of 2021. Hands down, and I remember having that same epiphany moment that he just had. This was so cool to watch. I was so enamoured with that video when I watched for the first time. That’s so cool! Thanks for that video dude!
Recently introduced to this album and band, also the channel. Love what you’re doing here keep it up! Also I think Brendon also produces their music, I’m sure he has assistance but I completely agree, the mix of punk rock and jazz, and all theses genres make Turnstile incredible.
From the Hard Core culture being blown open, doors wide open to a greater public awareness, from the music, to the musicianship, to everything they stand for….I genuinely think that GLOW ON is the Nevermind of this Generation! 🤘🏼 Perfect example is the song Mystery! It has the same intensity as Smells Like Teen Spirit, like you know a shift in music is about to occur! Just look at the video, youth being themselves, and having a voice! ❤️
I wish I could go back in time to when I heard this for the first time. Watching your reaction is pretty close, though! The hype is so real for this release. Nothing makes me feel quite like this album does. 10/10 performances, production, songwriting all around
Wow - introducing me to a new band - LOVE THIS! Thanks for reviewing them. I always learn more about music when I watch your videos! Could you review anything by The Cure. Maybe Fascination Street?
This is a fun reaction. Your knowledge is interesting and your enthusiasm is contagious, and I'm definitely gonna be listening to more Turnstile. New to me.
A little over a year ago I met turnstile and they became one of my favorite bands. Thanks to them I also discovered your channel, excellent work, the vibe is great, greetings from Argentina. Hopefully one day you will be able to listen to Gustavo Cerati both as a soloist and his band, Soda Stereo. He is the greatest artist of our country!
I’m so proud of Turnstile’s success. After nearly a decade of watching them steadily soar creatively in basements, church rec rooms and small venues, this really could not have happened to a nicer group of guys. I hope you check out some more of their stuff, share it with others, and maybe dip your toes more into the hardcore genre - there’s been a lot of cool things happening in that neck of the woods in the past few years.
First video of yours i’ve watched, long time Turnstile fan. Loved your reactions and insight AND PAUSING. I too have ADHD and followed your thoughts perfectly. Subbed and will watch more. Have a great day.
This video was so good. Glad it caught your attention. Would love to see you breakdown something like the wonder years. Especially anything off of The Greatest Generation or Suburbia. 🤘
GLOW ON is such a great album. Go listen to Turnstile “Real Thing” immediately and laugh how different it is to this and it was the album before. Unreal.
I came here to bother you about doing "Underoath-Thorn" but now I got sucked into Turnstile who I've never heard before and WOW. Thanks for doing this one :)
Highly recommend you check out their live performances. That’s what really sold me on Turnstile! They have a hate5six show for “GLOW ON” and another in a tiny venue in NY (Revolution Bar) that absolutely thrashes. Glad you enjoyed the EP!
Hi David, I'm coming back after seeing Turnstile last night. They were absolutely brilliant throughout, definitely one of the best live bands that I have ever seen! It was absolute carnage the whole gig!!
