------
Today's video is my FULL "music theory for dum-dums" crash course! Music theory 101!
Look, I know most people don't think music theory lessons are as interesting as we piano teachers do... so I'm trying to keep this video interesting.
This is going to be music theory explained on a broad level, and all the basic concepts will be laid out for you in this free course.
Specifically, we're going to look at how music chords theory and music scales theory tie together to create a real SONG.
We'll definitely also cover chord progressions theory too.
That's the thing, we can talk about music theory for beginners all day long...
But actually showing you how to USE this within the context of REAL SONGS is what's going to make sense of it all.
When learning about music theory piano is definitely the best instrument to illustrate the concepts on. But what you'll learn in this video is also applicable to guitar, or any other instrument.
(Here's a link to my Piano By Ear course that I mention in the video: bit.ly/piano-by-ear-coreylennox)

I had a math teacher whose motto was "Give Away the Secrets." And to my astonishment, he proceeded to do so in writing the clearest text on Vector Spaces extant. You have done the same, Corey. This is the clearest intro to music theory on the internet.

Like I said, completely random and maybe even creepy to you (if so, I'm sorry), but just felt the need to tell you that. Take care. Matt

Hi Corey. I'm a 76 year old woman and I'm learning to play the piano. I have a piano course I purchased from The Great Courses. I love Dr. Pike and her method. I have made progress with her lessons. I just learn to play the Lullaby by Brahm. My problem is that since it's a recorded corse, I can't ask her questions but I just found the solution. I watched your entire program and subscribed to your channel so I can have another great teacher to continue learning this great art, and make my dream of playing the piano come true. Your lesson is excellent. You're great at teaching the music theory that most people want to skip. I'm your new follower.

I’m 71 and actually blown away by your detailed explanation to most of the topics you touched on that have always confused me in the piano, great job Corey, I will rewatch this video over and over while practicing as I go along until I’m totally comfortable with everything that you so diligently outlined for us to follow along…thank you kindly!

I’ve just bought my first piano keyboard at the age of 52. I’ve been looking for something that breaks down the theory. I am amazed at how much you have covered and how simple the theory actually is. Don’t get me wrong putting all this theory into practice May take me years. So many videos out there that drop a major, minor, flat or sharp with no reason is just confusing. I’m 2 days into my journey but already can now find the scale of a note (albeit slowly) but each time I’m programming my brain and getting a little better. This video will probably be all I need for my first years to keep revisiting to grow my knowledge and understanding. It will be a monumental day when I feel ready to look at your intermediate class. Well done on producing a masterpiece “for dummies” that makes complete sense of a language that is foreign to most

Corey, I’m 75 years old and have about 10-12 years of piano lessons as an adult and this is the closest I have ever come to comprehending music theory. I’ve been very fortunate in my teachers but I resisted their attempts to impart theory. I’m going back to the piano after a several-year break and I determined this time I’m going to (a) learn to sight read better, and (b) gain an understanding of theory. This hour and a quarter was clearer than anything I’ve experienced. Thank you. I will apply what I’ve learned this evening and then check out the next video for the next level. Good job and I really appreciate it! BTW, love Lorelei!

Oh boy oh boy oh boy! I'm 67 and have been trying to teach myself to play the piano for a few years now. I just figured out what certain notes were by going up and down with the Every Good Boy Deserves... and FACE etc, and wrote the names of the notes underneath the staffs (know that's not right thing to do and l'll never learn to sight read that way) then just learned which note to hit next and eventually it became muscle memory. I can only play about half a dozen tunes this way. I'd heard of terms like fifths and sevenths etc but it's never made any sense to me. Then l found your video. I've just watched the whole thing and it's left me reeling. Its so good to have found someone who'll explain all this to beginners. It's a great base for starting to learn to 'do it right'. I'll have to make a lot of notes first so l don't have to keep going back to the video, but l can't wait to get stuck in. It's going to take a long time to learn all these scales but l'm determined. Thankyou soooo much for taking the time to make this video and for sharing your knowledge. God bless you Sir, in every aspect of your life. You're a treasure. 💖

I did piano for 10 years and ABRSM up to Grade 6, but was never taught why or how to apply any of it. You’ve done more in 90mins than ten years of didactic lessons ever did. Lessons where questions were quashed and any love I had for music died a bitter death. I’m not exaggerating; my six year old self would sob at the keys where my teacher (and at home my mother) waited to rap my knuckles with a ruler for any mistakes made. It was only after I joined a (non-auditioned) choir in my thirties that my innate curiosity and love for music was rekindled. After searching for some basic revision videos I came across yours. I cannot emphasise enough how clear and concise and actually useful your teaching is. Bravo sir. And thank you.

That makes me so sad to hear... No kid should have their knuckles rapped, or have the joys of music turned into a chore. To me if that happens, that teacher or adult has destroyed the entire point of music itself. But I'm so incredibly glad to hear you've rekindled your love of music and you're re-discovering it now. And incredibly glad I could help!

This instruction is platinum level! I'm 47 years old. I grew up with a piano in my house and used to figure out songs by ear. For nearly two decades I played whatever appealed to me at the time, and learned a LOT of chords, with some trial and error. I didn't understand the concept of scales, but at some point I had some kind of epiphany, and began to understand the structure of chords, and progressions, but without any real understanding of how to transfer a progression from one key to another, so like most noobs I settled into playing almost everything in the key of C. It worked, for a lot of years, but I always felt like I was sort of faking it. There was still a lot I did not understand about theory. Watching this video opened my eyes dramatically. It gave me a lot of explanation and much deeper understanding to concepts I had already discovered accidentally, but also opened my eyes to several concepts that I struggled with understanding my whole life. I very recently decided to start taking up the piano again, with the intent to get real instruction, learn to read sheet music, and understand music in general, as well as the piano specifically to take my abilities far beyond where they had stagnated in my 20s. I can't begin to tell you how eye-opening this video was for me. Some concepts I knew but just didn't have a name for them. More of an instinctive understanding. And other concepts were things I struggled to understand and make sense of, which you introduced and explained in a way that just feels like you've unlocked all these doors that have been keeping me from playing to my full ability. For a long time I've been able to play convincing well, but never to the level that I wanted to be able to play. I wanted to really know how to play, and understand what I was doing so I didn't feel like I was just faking it really well. I can't thank you enough for this video. This video instruction, or something like it should be a minimum requirement for every student at the beginning of their journey. Please tell me you have a similar lesson on reading g music!! 😅

Thank you, this made so much sense as a complete beginner. I've had lyrics written down for years that I always wanted to turn into songs, but the learning curve always seemed too steep. Watching this video honestly gave me a sign of relief because so much clicked.

I literally wanted to cry when I finished this video. It really did make sense and I gave me my first glimpse of the light at the end of the tunnel. Music really is a language and like learning Spanish or French, there's different rules that you have to follow and suffer through at the beginning, but once you understand the rules it makes sense. You presented these rules in a beautifully easy to understand way. I can't wait to see your intermediate and advanced courses. Thank you for taking the time and you've got a cute doggy LOL

This has been so helpful. Most of my music has been from guitar. But understanding it on piano and how that's all works it's the part I had difficulty with. I've seen this in other instruction videos but this one is the one that really makes it easier to understand. Thank you

Corey, This was by far one of the best lessons on Theory that I have seen. Awesome Job! A lot to wrap my head around but something I can start to work on right away. I've been a bassist for most of my life. Learned everything by ear. I've tinkered with keyboards as well. But now at almost retirement I'm looking to start writing songs. So I've been digging into harmony and theory. Two very related topics. Thanks much for your great video.

After being away from the piano for over forty years, I started taking piano lessons again, which is more demanding than I first reckoned. Your presentation helps me understand my German piano teacher better, who dwells on theory as much as you do. Good stuff, I say! Thanks, Corey! Your explanation is thorough and you are an excellent teacher!

Hi, Corey. My wife just bought me a new keyboard for Christmas (2023). It's a full 88 key Yamaha DGX-670. I'm 61 and I haven't had a lesson for FORTY-FIVE YEARS! And back then my mom paid for me to have THIRTEEN YEARS of lessons and never ONCE did my piano teacher (very old woman) teach me anything about Music Theory. Sure I learned to (kind of) read music, but never understood the keys, the chords and therefore never became fluent in reading/playing. That's why when I moved away from home back then, I didn't walk - I RAN away from anything piano related! I've always wanted to play well - but certainly not the classics like my mom wanted. She expected me to one day become a classical concert pianist! LOL!!! All I ever wanted was to play lounge-type piano, smooth jazz, r&b and things like that. FFWD to now and having this beautiful new instrument right here in my office!!! I KNEW that before I even attempted to play anything I remembered from the past, I needed to start with the basics on Music Theory and your video here, I split into two days and took notes and stopped the video often to practice on my keyboard your action steps. Granted, having some of the experience (even from 45 years ago) has helped me grasp some of this quicker than someone say starting from scratch; however, it's still been 4 hours yesterday to about the 1/2 way point of this video and then 4 hours this morning to finish and I must say the 'light bulb' may not be a bright as I would have hoped, but to be completely honest, there's a definite 'increase in wattage!' 😁 I purchased a new spiral bound 158 page book on music theory that will arrive here in a few days and I really wanted a 'root' understanding before I delved into that course! Once I have done all I can to learn and understand Music Theory, then and only then will I ease into the true enjoyment I have always wanted while playing! Thank you for this very 1st step into my new goal in playing - and after I can do that - then I can learn about all the amazing capabilities this new keyboard offers and play/create/enjoy and just continue growing as a keyboard player!

Dear Corey, I stumbled across this.. and I am excited to try some of this. I am a complete beginner. I have always dreamed of strumming and improvising. I am old but you made this accessible to me. Will let you know how it goes when I try to play as only listened at the moment. However you have reignited my passion, curiosity . I am indeed inspired to try again. Thank you.

Very much apriciate this. I just started with producing , and making the beat is just 1 step , and i realy need to learn to play (basic) keys/chords , on my 25 keys midi keyboard , lol. Most importently to translate something that i have in my head. Im just 10 min in your video and already learning. It sticks the way you explain in it , in a calm way. I watched some other videos but some way it doesnt click and stick. All the best from the netherlands
