This version looks awful, so I wasn't expecting anything great from it, but doesn't the ending ruin the moral of the story? The moral is "Be kind to everyone because we're all human," not "Be kind to people because, you never know, they could be angels in disguise."

Quasimodo and Pierre couldn't possibly know if Esmeralda was a nice person or not, only from that small song number. *Maybe* it could've been redeemed if she sang something akin to 'God help the outcasts' (well... lyric-wise, I mean) where we truly learn how compassionate and humble Esmeralda is. This one just sings about wanting more, including "fancy dresses" and "ribbons in her hair" :I ...

You should review the Golden Films Hunchback of Notre Dame. Esmeralda is renamed Melody, who has talking and singing bells and tambourine. Quasimodo has a hump not because of deformity, but because he's SHY and has a beauty and the beast transformation where he turns handsome. Frollo and Quasimodo in a plot twist turn out to be brothers!

The Frollo in this version looks like a mix of Gaston, Jafar, and the Sheriff of Nottingham from Robin Hood: Men in Tights

Look, Diva. I agree, this adaptation is a really clueless portrayal of the original tale and a really weird cash-in of the Disney film but if you think it's the worst, you should see the Goldenfilms Version. Honestly, I guarantee you'll look at The Secret of the Hunchback in a better light afterwards.

I don't think the people who made this movie even saw the Disney version. Do I need to point out how basically everything except the identity of the protagonists and antagonists and a few of their character traits are wrong as can be? (I'll point out the ones that most stuck out to me anyways.) Quasimodo didn't have loving guardians, he had an abusive one. His isolation wasn't a quasi-benevolent attempt to keep him safe, it was part of the abuse. Frollo wasn't guided by a desire for material wealth, but a mixture of zealous self-righteousness and conflicted lust. Quasimodo falling in love with Esmerelda for being nice to him works a lot better if it's the first act of kindness he's received, rather than the first act of kindness he's received _from a pretty lady._ One thing they arguably got right from Hugo's original novel is that the Gypsies are kinda scummy; they steal from the crowds, work for the villain with minimal persuasion, and Esmerelda's design fits the "kidnapped white baby" backstory she had in the novel. Needless to say, accidentally indulging in racism kinda weakens the anti-prejudice theme this film was trying to rip off of Disney...but this comment is full of things that didn't need to be said, so I'll say it anyway. ...I don't know what to say about the angel reveal out of nowhere. Maybe if it had more foreshadowing, more emphasis on how people called him a demon, and less accidental racism...and wasn't a general tire fire of a story, of course.

Well, to be fair, Esmeralda giving water to Quasimodo after his public whipping is from the book, but yeah. What an awful adaptation. You're better off with Disney on Hunchback.

Dang, I was hoping this would be the Goldenfilms Hunchback. It's so hilariously inept and offensive. Still, Quasimodo is my favorite archangel.

Quasimodo was the least nightmarish of all the angels in heaven, being a late bloomer he would later grow 2 extra heads 200 years later. And his cherub and seraphim cousins still laugh at him to this day.

Bad poet? Thinks he's a genius? Only does it to pick up chicks? Best friends with a bunch of weirdos? Familiar sounding voice? Yep, Pierre's Dandelion from the Witcher games.

Actually--holy hell, I've seen this. At school, even. They showed it to us when I was a kid, and even back then I was wondering why it was so different than the Disney movie...

What is it with animated mockbusters and their "The Secret of [propriety we're plagiarising]" titles?

I swear this movie already had me angry about how this movie turned Frollo into Saroucsh (from Hunchback of Notre Dame 2), but it had to go even further (especially that infuriating ending). Though the commentary made it bearable and was hilarious.

What surprises me is that they foreshadow/ hint at the wings earlier in the film, when the priest is looking at Quasimodo's wounds he says "They've cut him to the bone, it almost looks like-" Feathers. someone may have put 2 seconds of thought into that line.

I like Judge Frollo better than Gaston Frollo. Tony Jay this guy is not. And 36:31 Is nowhere near as good as "Hellfire"

I just realized something The whole point with the Roma People is they’re believed to be thieves, brutes, liars etc, which was wrong. It led to false persecution of the Roma people. Yet this movie has the Roma people actually be thieves, liars and brutes. Even Esmeralda, she was there to be the distraction while the Roma version of Three Stooges pickpocketed. So Frollo isn’t wrong in this instance. Kinda mixed messages your giving viewers

The name 'Quasimodo' means half-formed. Frollo only gave him that name out of disgust. It worked in that story. These kindly papa figures giving him that name is just wrong. In more ways than one.

Wait, Elliot S! Maggin!? He's actually a pretty well known comic book writer. Yeesh! Anyway, I kept hearing Leena's voice from Singing In the Rain in my head every time they said Pierre's name. "OH PIERRE! YOU SHOULDN'T HAVE COME!" Also, nobody likes hamdingers.

I hope you continue to do these. You perfectly channel the spirit of MST3K and Rifftrax, the references are clever, and there's no shortage of direct-to-video knockoffs to riff (though there are some I wouldn't force anyone to sit through). Golden Films' Beauty and the Beast (the one with the three ghosts) would be prime material for your stylings =)

I remember actually buying this video. It came with a CD with vastly expanded versions of some songs and some songs that were cut from the final product. Clearly even budget entertainment runs on very little money when it comes to animating the full musical numbers.

Of course Frollo’s lair is furnished by Hobby Lobby: it gives the lair that “craft store-bought, cheap kid’s play” vibe.

Ok, I'm letting it sink in. He fell off Notre Dame, and grew wings and ended up being an angel from heaven or something. Everyone was blessed super mega happy ending.

Maybe it's just because I've seen so many horrible straight-to-video movies cashing in on Disney's properties, but I think this one is at least somewhat decent? I mean the animation is alright, the pacing is good, there were a few moments that made me chuckle, and you can see from how they decided to reveal Quasimodo's looks that the people behind this movie care at least a bit about build-up

Though if Frollo got demoted to a security guard at Freddy Fazbears' Pizza and got violently murdered by animatronics I'd give Secret of the Hunchback a great rating!

I skipped to the end just to see how you'd react to Quasi sprouting wings and I was not disappointed.

If Pierre was Protestant, why the Hell would he think a Catholic church would marry him and Esmeralda? As (relatively speaking) nice as this Archdeacon is, I think he would know that Pierre doesn't belong to the church (or alternatively that he hasn't been attending church as often as he should during that time period). Plus, as an adoptive father of Quasimodo, I don't think he'd be too keen on marrying the people that pretty much left the city instead of finding a place to hide/go to the church and call for sanctuary and check up on Quasi. Or maybe I'm just taking this mockbuster too seriously.

Hearing Esmerelda's song in this video makes me want to have you review The Thief and the Cobbler. They have a song very similar to this one.

I thought esmarellda was named for an amulet or something in the book. Then for her eyes in the Disney version. Now they just gave her a totally new name in this rip off. 😂 😂😂 (and they made her white in this version too.) the whole reason quasi and esmarellda didn’t get together in the book is they are related.
