Musical Theatre Coach Reacts to Floor Jansen & Henk Poort 'Phantom Of The Opera' Beste Zangers 2019 

Andrew Lloyd Webber said that Henk was the best Phantom he ever heard.

Floor is finally getting the recognition the deserves in her home country. Every show she had planned with her band Nightwish next year sold out in seconds after this. 🤩

It wasn't even a TV Studio, just a tentlike structure. I think what makes this performance so special, especially for the other singers and the presenter, is that the both of them are so into the song, in their own little world, on such a small stage and so close by while the set is breaking down around them. You can actually see some rain streaming down around them (no special effects, just mother nature doing her work) XD

So....Henk is one of Floor's childhood heroes. She blew him away on this show. He did the distortion for her, cause he knew she was a metal singer. You could see Henk's face at the end, and even he looks surprised at the power coming out of this woman. The chemistry was amazing.

Henk Poort was only willing to sing this song with Floor under one condition: He only accepted if he could sing this song along with floor and Nightwish when they play their concert in 2020 in Amsterdam. Hopefully they record it and add it as a special to the tour Blu Ray

You need to react to the entire series. It is based off of having singers from different genres who really don't have anything in common, getting to know each other, and singing songs for each other that are either something they've written, or something that holds meaning in their lives. Big case in point, Henk Poort is classically trained, played the Phantom in the Dutch production of Phantom, as well as Jean Valjean in Les Miserables, so he plays this well. Henk is Floor's idol. until this season of that show, Floor was UNKNOWN IN HER HOME COUNTRY. no one knew of her. She sang Vilja Lied to Henk, and left him in tears. There isn't a single person she didn't leave in tears on that entire show. Beste Zangers. Find it on YT from Denise Hofs (she did the English Translations). I swear you will not be disappointed.

Yes, Henk is the Dutch Phantom. :) And he promised to sing this song on the show with Floor, if she will let him sing it with her at the upcoming Dutch Nightwish concert, so there should be the full Nightwish band backing those two in the future. :)

Henk was classically trained at the Sweelinck Conservatory in Amsterdam after he learned the trade of billiard table maker first. I kid you not. During his training he won the Cristina Deutekom Concours. After finishing his training he wanted more life and musical experience and travelled around Europe to sing for various opera houses. Verdi seemed to be his favourite as he played in 6 pieces by the Italian grandmaster. In Germany he mostly played operettes. With his experience he was then asked to play `The Phantom´ and some claim that Andrew Lloyd Webber had said that Henk ´was´ The Phantom. Not that he sang it best but the intensity he brought to his performances truly brought the character of Erik to life. Floor saw Henk play when she was a little girl and during her training at the Dutch Rock Academy and later the Conservatory considered his drive, versatility and approach to singing as an inspiration. So when they both ended up in this show Floor asked Henk to sing this song with her to make the `teacher`-'pupil'-theme from the novel come full circle. Henk agreed on the condition that he got to sing the song with Floor again when Nightwish would do a concert in The Netherlands. Floor and later the band agreed. So it looks like we will get to enjoy this performance again next year in the full Nightwish setting. No disrespect to the Marcel Fisser Band who have been phenomenal again during this show. Another story about Henk is that during his travels through Italy he once met a blind vocalist in a bar. They sang a couple of songs together and Henk was so impressed that he wanted to work more with the young man. Henk got offered to do another show somewhere else and they lost contact. A couple years later Henk recognized the voice when he heard "Time to say goodbye" and realised that the young man in the bar had been Andrea Bocelli. To honour him he also did a beautiful rendition of "Vivo Per Lei" with Emma Heesters on the show.

Floor Jansen is a Heavy Metal singer but has classical study. She started it because of Henk Poort. She watched him in the "Phantom of the Opera" ( he had the part of the Phantom himself) and she was saying to herself "I want to do that and sing like him." She became the Floor she is today by studying and practicing inspired by Henk, she adores him.

You are very welcome, Henk Poort played the Phantom as him years ago in Holland. I knew Floor had sang it before, and also Henk is a known Bariton in Holland. I was hoping they would do this on that show, and my wish was granted.... Fun fact, Henk had said he would only perform it with her if he had the chance to sing on the Nightwish concert 24th november 2020 in Amsterdam. Floor has still to confirm that will happen, but when it happens i am there. I already bought the tickets before they sold out.

The first symphonic metal band I ever listened to was 'Nightwish', and I fell in love with the band and Tarja (Turunen). Floor Jansen is also brilliant, and wonderful to listen to. Who else is enjoying Nightwish' in 2020?

That was Henk's second ever performance using distortion, the first was also for this show. Career classical baritone, he learned the distortion technique for Floor. The show highlights singers so the mix is leaning toward the vocal side.

That was fun! I SO was looking forward to your reaction. The first song of this season of "Beste Zangers" began with Floor singing a rock/metal version of the aria, "Vilja Lied" (in German) from the operetta, "The Merry Widow" to Henk (his mother had sung it to him as a child) and ended with Floor's Christine singing for Henk's Phantom of the Opera.

If you watch the video closely, you'll also see streams of water pouring through the tent, there was a massive storm going on outside, which made it all the more intense. Though I do have to agree with a few people that have said that Floor doesn't quite hit the highest note at the end (I had to double check with a copy of my cousin Claire (Sarah Brightman's understudy and latter replacement) singing it to be sure) I think that Floor did a more than admirable job of it. I was blown away.

Floor Jansen is probably, if not definitely, the best female singer in rock and pop music today. The range, power, versatility and finally the craft which she brought in spades to Beste Zangers.

Henk Poort with Emma Heesters sing a duet viva al lei, that will also give you the chills; Tim Akkerman singing Shallow with Floor is fantastic; Emma Heesters with Winner was stunning. But also the others can really sing and make music. This show has shown this year again how much fun it is to make music together. This year again singers from different backgrounds that are going back to the basics, enjoying making music together, expressing through music, share the love for music. No competition, go for a challenge. Every individual grew during this program. Also Henk learned new things. It was so much fun to watch and listen.

"He is very well trained." Me thinking: Yeah... well.. he did had a head start of about give or take 20 plus years, since he was the original Dutch Phantom. Also check his version of "The sound of silence" I think you might like it.

In this dutch tv show.. they sing each others songs or songs that means alot to them... in this last episode they could do a duet by choice.. so floor jansen (singer of nightwish) asked henk poort to sing this duet with her (because he was the original phatom singer in the 90s)and because henk poort is an great example and idol of her.. in her eyes.. the great henk poort... and she alwayes wanted to do this song with him... and wich henk replied on.. i will do this song with you on one condition... that is... when nightwish come to netherlands that he will do this song with nightwish and floor in a sold out show.. this stuff is like magic... what an experience.. :) greetings.. :)

henk is great and in this show he does some out of his comfort zone stuff. Floor and the other singers on the couch do incredible renditions of songs worth analyzing.

Henk Poort is a 63 year old Dutch Opera Baritone Opera singer who can alsoo sing Tenor, He said in this show he did 30 Operas 26 Opperettas and about 10 Musicals and a bit of acting. He onley began his classical training age 26. But long before that he sang as a non-proffesional and stood out amongst the rest. First he learned to craft Biljarts Tables. They offered him to finish the "conservatorium" two years early because by that time he allready was doing Operas in Germany. He alsoo lived in Italy for 15 years. Actually, they sang this in a tent while it was raining (you can see the rain leaking in) The band played 50 songs in 5 days, for these 7 singers together... in so many different styles. The recordings became 8 TV shows. So, far from ideal situations... yeh, a full orchestra might be even nicer. Thanks for this enthusiastic review

I think you'll be happy to know that the condition Henk had to do this duet was that he would be invited to appear when the upcoming Nightwish tour reaches the Netherlands - and they accepted! :) Worth noting about Henk's distortion; This is the second time _ever_ that he has sung with distortion. The first time was when singing Sound of Silence in a previous episode of the same show. In the "interview" part of that episode he said he was incredibly nervous since he's a trained opera singer and distortion is heavily frowned upon - but he wanted to do it since the Disturbed cover of Sound of Silence is Floor's favorite. In short, he's had only a couple of hours of actual coaching on how to add distortion properly and he pulled off *THIS* at his second time performing. Pretty damn impressive.

Watched this at least 20 times across different YT channels and I get full body goosebumps every single time.

Having moved away from The Netherlands 16 years ago I hadn't heard Henk sing for that amount of time. You can hear he's aged a bit and I would urge Phantom fans to also listen to his original vocals. Perhaps his age is actually helping with the distortion? You can tell he still slips right into the role of the Phantom when he's singing this. The movements, his hands, it was like going back in time! I'll never forget seeing this live in the theatre.

This was the last episode of the season. The band that played here only had a few day's to learn the music for 8 songs that night. Henk and Floor had to rehears 2 duets in the same time.

Henk is indeed super well trained, the original Dutch Phantom, he never used any in-ears in this entire show, he knows his voice so well, he also had never used distortion on his voice before Beste Zangers, that's totally something new he managed to pull off for some reason, it's soooo cool and impressive! (He's a baritone, if he ever uses distortion while performing an opera he'd lose his job lol). Great reaction and Henk Poort (Opera singer)is one of Floor's idols so this was awesome for her to perform with him and they both nailed this as if Webber wrote it for them!! Henk did this on the promise from Floor that he could join Nightwish when they perform in Amsterdam on November 24, 2020 to perform this. While the band has to okay that, who is ever going to say NO to Floor!!!! I think that show will be earmarked for a taping and with Nightwish in a 17,000+ arena the backing music will certainly by up to your standards at that time. I must say though this studio band has been excellent as they have done an excellent job for all the different genre songs by all 7 different artist some in multiple languages (Floor did German, Spanish, English and Dutch) so they have really rose to the occasion. Floor and Henk are doing a mini 9 date tour with this studio band in the Netherlands in January, 2020 so we will see how good the band can be in a larger venue. Great reaction and man this was perfection, Floor even managed to get you to like the "mix" which you are not normally a fan of so another great job by her.

Henk has 60 operas, operettas, and musicals under his belt. Well trained is an understatement. It's not really a studio per say. It's an outdoor tent. If you watch the video closely you can see streams of water coming down in places since it started raining right about the time they performed the song.

The great thing about "Beste Zangers" is that the musicians are free how they want to make a song sound and then you get sometimes surprises that you do not expect, that is the power of the "Beste Zangers".And to think that all participants are a few meters away so their experience comes in like a sledgehammer.

I just watched a video who sang the best song (male) in the Phantom, and then one about the female version. To my untrained ear, the male leads did very well, but the female leads just sounded like they were screaming. I love the way Floor and Henk did it.

There are reports that Henk Poort will sing Phantom with Floor when Nightwish next come to the Netherlands on tour. That should be epic, with the Nightwish band behind them. As others have already mentioned, it would be great if you could react to Henk singing The Sound of Silence for Floor (one of her favorite songs). He does the Disturbed version. Quite a surprise considering it's the first time he'd ever used distortion because it's a big no-no in opera but he did it for Floor. Very nice reaction here, thank you.

Floor's childhood musical hero. He was the Dutch Phantom and according to Andrew Lloyd Webber one of the best Phantoms ever. I can't disagree. :) When Floor heard there would be a duets episode in Beste Zangers she asked Henk to do this one together. He agreed if he could also sing it with her at the Nightwish concert in The Netherlands. Deal of course!

Henk Poort is an opera singer and has performed in the Dutch production of The Phantom. There is a good chance that Henk will be a special guest on November 24, 2020 when Nightwish plays at the sold out Ziggo Dome in Amsterdam. Also Floor has booked 9 solo show in the Netherlands for January 2020. All 9 shows sold out in 1 day. She will perform songs from the Beste Zangers show and various others from her career. Henk is the dutch pahantom in theaters. But he never sings with distortion. So this is something unique from him to. The band was maybe not that "present" but they played every song they were told to play in this show damn good. So i do think they deserve a lot of respect to

Was looking forward to your reaction to this one, knowing you're a big fan of this song. Floor's take on it is really interesting to me. In the last couple of years she's become fond of using her mixed voice in a opera-ish placement in places where a classically trained soprano would normally use their head voice. I personally love the chestier resonance it gives her, and I think it matches well with Henk's heavier voice. Her approach to the climax is also really cool. I don't think I've ever seen anyone else escalate in power as they ascended the notes like that, culminating with her smashing that D6 for 7 seconds. It really suited the frenetic climax of the Nightwish version of the song.

I read somewhere that he had been a mentor of hers early in her career, and when he agreed to do this appearance with her, he asked to do the Nightwish version as a compliment to her.

I'm so glad that all those Vocal Coaches are discovering the Gems, that my country has to offer. We have so many good singers and performers in the Netherlands, they're to big for our country, but they love it here. I'm a very Proud Dutchman !!!!!!

Floor grow up listening to him and really wanted to do this song with him. Henk has performed in operas and musical theater. He was also the lead in The Phantom of the Opera back in the 90s. He's a pretty well known singer in the Netherlands while Floor wasn't as well known until this show. Shocking right?!

They are certified UVS voice coaches at the Universal Voice Institute in Amsterdam. UVS (Universal Voice System) is a simple and clear system to get the most out of your voice. Floor requested to do this duet with Henk. It seems that she's a big fan of his, from what I gathered from the show. He's an opera and theater legend in the Netherlands. He agreed to do this duet with her, but only if he could also sing it again with her when Nightwish comes to the Netherlands next. So next year we will have this awesomeness with him and Nightwish!
