Musician’s first time reaction to SNARKY PUPPY Lingus

This Snarky Puppy reaction is genuinely my first time ever hearing this group or this song. The level of expert musicianship on display in this Lingus song is off the scale. Entirely. Absolutely mindblowing stuff from Snarky Puppy. I bow to thee.
0:00 Intro
0:22 Start of song
10:45 Summary
When I do my reaction videos I don't press pause because I don't want to interrupt the natural flow of the music as it was originally intended by the artist. I try to vocalise my thoughts in real time as I listen to the song, and then summarise my reaction afterwards.
You can checkout the artist's original track without my commentary here: • Snarky Puppy - Lingus ...
Please do recommend songs or other artists for me to checkout in future by commenting on this video! I'm constantly on the lookout for great new music and things I've never heard before.
A Spotify playlist of songs I've reacted to and consider to be absolute bangers can be found here: open.spotify.com/playlist/26j...

I’m a drummer/bassist/guitar player and producer in Toronto. I went on tour with a Soprano playing drums for her for a tour. Later on I was engineering a record for her (not playing) and Larnell came to play drums on a few songs. Not only is he one of the best, but he is super nice and humble. At one point he asked me how I met the artist at first and I omitted the fact that I had also played drums with her, as it felt like the consummation of impostor’s syndrome. “I’m not worthy!!!”

Larnell Lewis, the main percussionist, is using 3 snare drums. From left to right from the drummer's perspective, you have the snare with the cymbal on it, called a stack, that he uses to make the clap sound. He puts it to the left of the hi-hat. Next, you have the normal snare, in the normal snare placement. Lastly, there's a snare with the snares disengaged, where the high floor tom would usually go. He basically uses that one as a tom. The reason I said main percussionist is because Snarky Puppy also has an auxiliary percussionist. Although he might not use it in this song, Nate Werth sometimes has a disengaged snare in his set up. The guy is an underrated genius, who is always perfectly in time with the drummer, which in this session, makes Larnell sound like he has eight hands, when he already sounds like he has four to begin with.

Great reaction! As a brass player, I can point out one thing the brass section is doing here to get the crispness you're sensing: they're using their tongue to STOP the airflow, as well as start it. When we first learn brass, usually from more of a classical perspective, we're taught to "tongue" the start of the notes, and gently release the ends without an abrupt tongue stoppage. But, when you get into more modern styles of playing, like funk and soul, you usually hear players using very powerful airflows and stopping them super abruptly with their tongue. Also, they're all doing this remarkably in-sync with one another. One thing funk-type horn sections focus a lot on is when the note *ends*. Of course you gotta play the start of the note together - but if you also end it precisely together? 🤌

Cory Henry may very well be the next Chick Corea. And if you aren't intimate with Corea's works with Return to Forever and you want to live through that catalog. I had the pleasure of studying music at NTSU in 1975 and knowing Lyle Mays and his masterpieces. The roots of this band are from NTSU (now UNT). There is so much going on in this work that they are truly musician's musicians. The audio engineering is first rate. And captures the soundstage of many years of what NTSU produces.

What About Me might just be my favorite fast fusion track of all time. It's incredibly dense and brimming with detail, yet not crowded. Also it houses one of my favorite guitar solos of all time - the way it enters slowly feeling around for notes, seemingly blind, progressively laying on the whammy until almost all sense of organization or tonality is lost, then suddenly ramping up the tension by methodically climbing up the neck, screamingly emphasizing each added note, just before releasing into a bunch of fusion flurries and then piling on more tension by calling back to the uncontrollable climb just seconds before. The final few phrases feel like a logical destination, a chaotic soup of all the ideas heard before releasing themselves to the fullest all at once.

everytime (everyday) i watch this video and see this solo from Corey Henry, i can NEVER understand how someone can "improvise" a solo, with a part of the solo being a fast melody in unison with BOTH HANDS! feels like the only way to achive that, is to separate your left brainhalf apart from your right brainhalf, since a unison melody played with both hands is "mirrored" amazing

One of my favorites reactions to this video actually. Love the close view of your face and will watch more of your videos. 👍 You need to react to the other songs on this album.

PLEASE PLEASE react to Cory Henry - Purple Rain… the level that this guy performs is ridiculous… I strive to love music and life the way Cory loves to play music… the facial expressions are priceless… he can’t hide the feeling that music gives him… it’s incredible and the world needs more of it!!!

You need to check out Larnell Lewis (the drummer) hearing a song for the first time then playing it! Dude is unreal

Yes! Crazy! They are so good" I never get tired of this performance. As I mentioned in an other comment you should listen to their song "Something" featuring Lalah Hathaway(It is a very different type of song. much more relax). Larnel their drummer learned the seven songs recorded during this seen on the plane the day before! How the f... is this possible. He must be an alien or a Canadian (ha!ha!). Check out this video of Larnel Lewis on Drumeo ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-vIW72VXMPHo.html. He listen to a song with no drumming parts then just goes for it. A must see!

Larnell learned that song on the plane ride over to play with them, he never actually got to practice playing the drums with them. The dude is amazing

Crazy part is that Cory’s solo section is actually in 4/4 time, but the rhythm is so syncopated it’s hard to find the beat.

all their drummers are rediculous, J.T., Sput, Jameson, and Lamarr, are next level. All with a different sound but all fit perfectly when they have the reins to drive that wagon.

People always rave about Cory's solo, but I'm more impressed by the insanity of what Larnell is doing. I don't understand what Cory's doing either so I focus on Larnell and Bill Laurence, who's doubling the kick on the piano.

Larnell Lewis is one of the drummers that are least likely to mess up a beat. The guy is a prodigy. In fact, every one in this band is a damn legend. This band is just too much and I hope one day the world will acknowledge this type of music because the talent to pull this off is extremely hard. I've been drumming for a decade, I don't even hope to reach Larnell's level

While you are super late to the party, I don’t believe you have no idea who you are watching. This is one of the most influential bands of today. If you are sincere then welcome to an incredible new world of bands and music.
