And thank you for checking this legendary band, performing here at Wacken Open Air in 2013, together with Floor Jansen, the 3rd and present female singer of the band, in front of a 82k audience. About the instrumental and vocal added parts - it's good to know they recorded their orchestral and vocal back tracks with prestigious institutions as London Philharmonic Orchestra. London's The Metro Voices choir group and London's Young Musicians Children's Choir as their regular partners. As I saw, you enjoyed the powerful performance of the band, together with the stellar vocals of our Dutch metal queen, Floor Jansen. Hope you'll continue on this path. Since this is your first Nightwish reaction, it is my duty to give you the [updated] short history of the band concentrated by Ann Waychoff, one of the biggest Nightwish fan who has since passed away (and I am doing this in her memory): " Nightwish was started in 1996.They are considered a Symphonic Metal band, with a female main singer. They are from Finland. Tuomas Holopainen, the keyboard player, composes and writes the lyrics for 95% of their music. [The 1st Bassist of the band was Sami Vanska, he was with them until 2001. The 2nd one was Marco Hietala, as Bassist and vocals, since 2001 to 2020. He recently announced his retirement both from the band and the public life for the next year at least - we'll see what the future brings to us. Then very recently (May 2021) Jukka Koskinen became the 3nd Bassist of the band, for at least the Human :II: Nature tour] And there is the guitarist Emppu Vuorinen . Then there is Troy Donockley from UK who is a multi-instrumentalist and vocals. Jukka Nevalainen is the drummer. In 2015 due to Jukka's health issues Kai Hahto became the drummer and as of now is a permanent addition. Nightwish has had three singers. 1st one was Tarja Turunen (Operatic vocals). She was with them until 2005. The 2nd one was Anette Olzon from Sweden (Poppy, strong vocals). She was with them until 2012.The 3rd and current singer is Floor Jansen, from Netherlands (power, operatic, soprano.....most versatile) - you just heard her. There are live concerts that you should use depending on what era. Floor Jansen is a vocal athlete with incredible range, versatility, vocal stamina, and stage presence. She is a soprano with a range of more than three octaves (D3 to F6). It is apparent when listening to her sing that she has spent the better part of her life fine-tuning her instrument with help from several vocal coaches. Floor can sing in multiple languages and genres and is a vocal coach herself. It is incredible how she is able to take any song and make it her own. This woman is a true gift to her craft and an incredible addition to a band that has always been great until 2013 when they officially hired the undisputed Queen of Metal Floor Jansen, making Nightwish the greatest band on the planet. Floor Jansen is the third and present singer of Nightwish and widely considered the best and most versatile female singer of our time, yet undiscovered by a broad audience. As I am a Flooraholic from Utrecht, The Netherlands, here is some more background information on our Dutch Valkyrie Queen. She joined the band 'After Forever' in 1997 at the age of 16. My favourite song is 'Energize Me'. They made a very beautiful music video out of this. Floor attended the then new Rock Academy in 1999 and graduated in 2003. Later she did a year Conservatory to learn some more classical singing. 'After Forever' disbanded in 2009 and Floor started her own band 'Revamp' from scratch. Here she experimented with different vocal styles within one song, such as from full operatic to serious growls in seconds. The songs 'Disdain' and 'Wild Card' are good examples. During this time Floor also did vocal coaching and as Floor is a perfectionist she wants to do everything at 100%+. Eventually she had to pay the price and got a burnout. She had just recovered when in september 2012 the call came from Nightwish to fill in for the remainder of the American Tour as their second singer Annette got ill. Floor had just 48 hours to learn the whole setlist. There is a documentary made of this world tour ('Please learn the setlist in 48 hours'). The lyrics of the songs of Nightwish are very poetic and the music as a whole is challenging, but Floor pulled it off and she stayed for the whole world tour, culminating in this iconic Wacken 2013 Open Air festival. It was obvious that the match Nightwish and Floor Jansen was made in Walhalla, so she became a permanent member of the band in 2013 as the relationship with Annette and the band was strained even before she became ill. Floor continued to perform with 'Revamp' for a couple of years, but it became clear that she could not combine the two for much longer, so Revamp disbanded in 2016. Floor did a side project called 'Northward' where she dived into the Hard Rock scene. The song 'While Love Died' is a must see. Her stunning performances on the Dutch TV show 'Beste Zangers 2019' gave her at last some more recognition in her home country where she was relatively unknown until then. There are numerous guest appearances with other bands to find on RU-vid. To see how to get a crowd of metalheads silenced and in awe, watch her featuring with the band 'Epica' and the song 'Stabat Mater Dolorosa'. And to see her in full opera mode watch her rendition of 'O Mio Babbino Caro' from Puccini. As live concerts were cancelled and home isolation due to the Covid situation, Floor discovered RU-vid in the last year and uploaded many interesting videos on her channel. Mindblowing covers, chats with her idols and other singers, vocal masterclasses, personal insights and so much more. She even made a video reacting to herself performing this song at Wacken. Nice reaction...Nightwish are definitely a band that should be reacted to live,the studio stuff is great,but live...they’re exceptional.Their music ranges from Rock,Thrash,Folk,Celtic to name a few,and Floor goes from Opera through to full on screaming and growling and any other style that’s needed. .

Some context this was the 13th song of a set of 15 at this concert in front of 82,000 Metal fans. Wacken hosts a metal /rock festival every year. Glad you enjoyed the performance. I am sure, like many others have said to you, this is just one facet of Nightwish. This is usually just recommended first because, one, it is an epic performance but it showcases everyone's musicianship. They are so much more. They have heavier songs, even from this very concert, that only have small elements of the symphonic, they have longer epic songs like this one, they have jazz, folk and Floor herself has cover's on her channel she has been doing because of the pandemic. I would say, as I am sure others have stated already, Nightwish is a Live band. They are best experienced with their live performances because they put out an album and tour for 1.5-2 years. That is who they are and what they enjoy. All of their official live performances are nearly studio quality as this recording is. I would suggest keeping with their live stuff, but I really like Floor and most of the songs since 2012 are sung by her live since she wasn't even a full member of the band at the time of this performance. great reaction. The flaming bulls head is the logo of Wacken Open Air festival. The Organizers chose this because the festival takes place on cattle pastures that belong to the village of Wacken (approx. 2000 residents) about 50 miles north-west of Hamburg, Germany. The guys who started the first festival in 1990 just wanted to listen to some metal and there was no venue that played this music in the area. At the first festival there were 800 visitors and only 6 local bands who played on a stage that was self-constructed by the organizers. At the 30yrs anniversary of W:O:A in 2019 there were over 75.000 visitors from 84 countries from all over the world, listening to 200 international bands on the 4 festival days. Since 2012 the festival is sold out every year. When my buddies and I ordered our tickets for Wacken 2020, the first 10.000 tickets were sold in just 8 minutes. The other 65.000 regular tickets lasted only 24 hours longer until it was sold out. Unfortunately it had to be postponed to 2021 due to the pandemic and got postponed again to 2022. In 2013 Nightwish were headliners and this show was part of their Imaginaerum world tour. 10 months ago, in 2012 they had to replace their singer (Anette Olzon) in the middle of the US leg of the tour. Tuomas Holopainen (keybords, co-founder, composer and writer of most of their songs) called Floor Jansen. He knew her from a previous tour when she was with another band. Floor had only 2 days to fly from the Netherlands to the US and to learn the setlist (there is a documentation about this tour called "Please learn the setlist in 48 hours"). A few weeks after this show at Wacken they officially announced Floor to be a permanent member of the band. Together with her Troy Donockley (multi-instrumentalist) became a full member. He plays tin whistle, low whistle, Irish bouzouki, guitar and uilleann pipes in some of the songs (he is not on stage for this song).

I'm glad you enjoyed it and it would be wonderful if you could react to more of their music. One tip; they are best appreciated LIVE. I think I've mentioned to you that none of their songs are alike. There are epic songs, like the one you just reacted to, but they can also go really heavy on you and the next song could be very folky sounding. Floor can growl too, maybe not as extreme as Tatiana from Jinjer, but still... In short, you haven't seen anything yet! Have a look at Gabriel Bardac's comment for a history of the band. Your ability to appreciate the talent involved in something that might not necessarily be your preferred style is admirable. Nightwish is a very diverse band…not all of their songs are epic like this. From this same Wacken 2013 show, I’d recommend Song of Myself, Storytime, Romanticide, and Everdream. That’ll give you some idea if their different textures. Definitely stick with the live versions for now…that’s where they really shine.

Yessss, finally the Nightwish reaction! Thank you so much for checking them out, totally understand if they're not everyone's cup of tea but I'm glad you enjoyed it! as others have said Floor is their 3rd and current female singer. This song was originally done by their 1st singer, Tarja. Alot of songs Floor sings were either written for Tarja (operatic)or their second singer Anette (poppy vocals) Floor is classically trained but her heart is in metal. Her previous bands are After Forever and ReVamp. She is extremely versatile and can sing from what i seen any genre she wants and her range is just as impressive going from death metal growling to hitting the D6 in Phantom Of The Opera. Floor wasnt an official member of the band during this specific performance she was filling in for Anette she became an official member shortly after. Not all of their songs are this long but its rare to have a song by them thats not 5+ minutes. Tuomas, the keyboardist writes and composes 95% of their music. He is known as the metal mozart.(Side note: the pipe organ is just a prop lol its covering his 3 or 4 keyboards and wine 🤣) Thanks for reacting to GLS. If you wanna see a bit lighter then I recommend Storytime(Waken 2013) next if you want darker, Song Of Myself(Waken 2013) or Romanticide(Waken 2013). Cant go wrong with any of them lol.

Welcome into the wonderful world of storytelling by Nightwish. The burning bulls head is the official emblem of Wacken Open Air festival in Germany. The ‘pipe organ’ isn’t an organ but actually Tuomas’ keyboards stand. Although the band is Finnish their 3rd female vocalist isn’t, she is Dutch. Floor Jansen (pronounce Yahn-Sen) was born on Februari 21st, 1981 in Goirle the Netherlands. At the age of 16 she started her career as (initially) just as background singer from the Dutch metal band ‘After Forever’ in 1997 but real soon she took over the lead until early 2009 and the band fell apart. Parallel she studied at the Dutch Rock Academy in Tilburg starting in 1999 where she graduated in 2003 and spent two years on classical training with the National Conservatory. She studied Musical Theatre and one year Opera. She plays guitar, piano and flute and has completed 12 years of music studies. She’s a Light Lyric Soprano and her vocalrange runs from E3 to D6. In addition to her activities at After Forever, she gave singing lessons. On May 5, 2010, she presented her new band ‘ReVamp’, which was disbanded in September 2016. In August 2010 Jansen was a guest in the TV program De tiende van Tijl. In that program she sang an aria by Puccini. From October 1, 2012 Jansen replaced Anette Olzon as the singer of Nightwish halfway their Imaginaerum World Tour. On October 9, 2013, it was announced that she was to become the group's regular new front singer.

Another Soul Snatched by the Valkyrie Goddess

Hey Pete. This is generally the first video people react to. It's a great video for people that don't listen to metal as it changes their perception of the genre. However it's not the best first song for people that love metal. Keep reacting and you will find that they have a lot of harder songs. And then they will unleash the Marco bomb!!! Haha I love their guitarist Emppu - he is always having a blast. One tip though, the songs since Floor joined - always play the live performances. Her stage presence is the icing on the cake and they have so much fun and energy live. Lots of people that like Nightwish love Jinjer and vice versa. They are very different, but also have a lot of similarities in that they really play with timings, have great musicians and of course two of the best singers full stop.

With Jinjer and Nightwish you didn't even scratch the surface of mainland Europe symphonic / prog metal. Thanks to RU-vid you can see and hear what you missed out of due the radiostations in states who block mainland Europe music. Check out more bands and maybe and i mean maybe you are ready for Ayreon.

No need to react to studio versions, BUT, if you want to see just how epic they are live listen to a studio song then watch the same song live. The studio version is always really good but the energy they bring to a live performance lifts it to the next level. Keep in mind that Ghost Love Score is the only song they have that sounds like it, a lot of their stuff is different so you aren’t going to get bored of them.

This is 2% of what Nightwish can do. Thrash metal, epic metal, folk, celtic, ballads... its the biggest rabbit hole in music and life changing musically if you dive in. Don't make the mistake of thinking all Nightwish music is like this... it isnt. Its just as amazing, from about 120 songs they now have. Most people will suggest something like Romanticide or Ever Dream from the same concert (you cant go wrong with any of the 15 tracks from this concert) but personally i'd love to see you go for one called Seven Days to the Wolves from Wembley. Don't be tempted to go for The Poet and the Pendulum or The Greatest Show on Earth yet (24 minutes!!!), get to know the band a little first.

Gabriel knows the way. His list will get you there. The live versions are actually the way to go. This is one of those groups where the live versions are superior. The Nightwish Army comes. Hello Pete. I am always wondering that Americans don’t know much about Europe. The problem is that they don’t speak their languages. Floor Jansen, the amazing singer from Nightwish speaks fluently English, Swedish, German, Finnish , Dutch and a bit French. Nightwish is a great band in Europe. But There’s hope…more and more Americans discover Nightwish. I hope you will follow your “ journey” in Nightwish. Next song Storytime please, a another great song song of Nightwish. Nightwish is a live band and it is all about the interaction with the crowd. So, live is awesome. I would suggest 'Romanticide' from Wacken 2013 as a good second reaction. You’ve got a great energy mate and I think you and the Nightwish Army are gonna get along great! Their songs are so diverse there are sure to be several that you absolutely love. Floor is an absolute legend and probably nothing you ever see or hear will convince you otherwise. If you ever get a chance to see them live I would highly recommend that you do so.
