This song can be interpreted two ways What's the use of feeling blue?- As in what's the point in feeling sad? You can't change what happened to her so why let it eat at you thousands of years later. You need to move on Or What's the use of feeling, Blue?- Which could be interpreted as Yellow Diamond questioning why Blue Diamond is allowing her emotions to control her. There's no point in her feeling sad or depressed, because Pink diamond was shattered 6000 years ago
It doesn't help Yellow is in denial about her own grief. Blue is drowning in her grief. Yellow is suppressing it. Both are dealing with it in extremely unhealthy ways... specifically by not dealing with it at all. Yellow wants to know the point of feeling AT ALL if it results in this pain, as well as demanding to know why Blue is wallowing, with the same question. She eventually breaks down because it makes her confront the fact she too is grieving and becomes briefly overwhelmed.
It’s extra heartbreaking when you realize she’s not asking her, “what’s the use of feeling blue (sad)?” But rather, “what’s the use of feeling, Blue?” Since she’s talking to Blue diamond, that’s what she calls her. So really, she’s asking why she should bother feeling anything at all, not just sad, but anything. 😭
@@Wandervenn also when you SPOILER Know that her power has to do with feeling it just makes the song writing even better ik a lot of people complain about the show but there is no way anyone can complain about rebecca's song writing
Pearls are slaves to important gems, they can sing, they can dance, they can carry your stuff, and they can do your work. But the main character Pearl is free a pearl and as she say's it "i belong to NOBODY!" Oh and pearls are usually seen as property not people
The latter being very valid from the fact that at the end, Yellow sings it like this: What’s the use of feeling? What’s the use of feeling? What’s use of feeling, Blue?
I think, even though you can interpret each instance as either, Yellow is singing more the second one at the beginning and then more the first one at the end because at first, she's singing directly to blue but later, she's more asking herself why she's feeling the way she does.
When she says, a sapphire has a use she can tell you what it’s for, an agate terrifies a lapis terraforms, she’s referring to how a sapphire can see the future and how an agate is kind of a boss for squadrons of troops, and a lapis terraforms planets for their diamonds, the big yellow and blue one
The singer is Patti LuPone - if you don’t know who she is, you should look her up because she is AMAZING! She’s a singer and an actress and she’s even been on Broadway. Absolute superstar
I was going to say this! Yes Patti LuPone is absolutely amazing! She's won how many Tony awards by now? Very distinctive voice, hits those notes like nobody's business!
random fact: the person singing in this song, the voice actor is Patti LuPone edit: huh, someone already pointed that out, huh.... well alright and since i'm editing my comment, i'm gonna suggest a Steven Universe song someone hasn't suggested yet: Strong in the Real Way is a good song from the earlier in the series, but there are definitively more important SU songs out there
I just noticed that the song becomes less dissonant as Yellow becomes more emotionally honest! The harmony becomes stronger in the second half of the song
As someone who sees themself in Yellow Diamond, specifically in this song, I'd like to think at the end the humming was a self soothing action, and humming this song specifically a reminder to "stay strong" - not allowing to feel sadness?
@@f.horstmann8447 fun fact, that melody is just the diamonds theme without the harmony, so for her, the way she calms herself down is by reminding herself that all of them are still leaders and she needs to be focused on what she's doing edit: also fun fact, the diamonds theme harmony is 4 different chords all representing a diamond each, and the melody cuts off right before pink diamond's chord, also emphasizing that yellow has moved on, or at least tries to
Added context: The character she's singing to is named Blue. The title is actually "What's the use in feeling, Blue?" She's not just saying that they shouldn't feel sad, she's saying there's no point in feeling anything.
the people saying "watch the show" should really be asking: "watch the movie" It's a singular commitment, it has about 9 or 10 bangers in it, it is DESIGNED for people who don't know the full show and summates everything so far, and David fits the bill of "I am interested but no way can i watch 200 episodes." And no buts about spoilers 99% of reveals have been covered in songs already reviewed, the spoils have happened now bruh
I believe that “Something Entirely New” is one of the most beautiful songs in the series so if you could react to that I would really like to hear your thoughts about it.
When I first saw the notification I was like "oh he's gonna have fun dissecting the weirdly unique tempo of this song" lol There's just something strange and different going on in the song music-wise that always stuck to me
I strongly advise you to listen to the song "Found" from Steven Universe Movie, the continuation of the song "Drift Away". Although it is short, it has captured my heart forever! p.s. love your videos, they always make me smile)
Ultra dissonant.Takes so many relistens to get comfortable with. It takes a master like Patti Lupone to change pitch like that three times in one song.
An extra piece of context I find interesting is that the characters name itself is Blue Diamond. So you could read the line as, "What's the use of feeling blue." Or "What's the use of feeling, Blue?" since Yellow is a character that represses her emotions.
i've always loved the ending to her song because she gets faster and her tone gets weird as if she starts panicking because the feelings she's trying to surpress are coming back and then hums the melody of the pearls that was originally supposed to comfort blue, like she needed to calm down and not panic in order to show blue the stern face she asks of her
This song always stood out to me among the many awesome tracks in the series. Wish Yellow sang a few more songs bc you know Patti would kill it, but character-wise it makes sense that Yellow wouldn't sing much, she has her Pearl for that.
Okay since I'm early again I shall recommend that you listen to "I'd rather be me with you" from Steven Universe so that you can see their future relationship.
I always think Love Like You is an incredibly beautiful song and is totally worth a listen to. I love the lyrics and it’s definitely the song that has stuck with me the most from this show. :)
Asking you again, pleease react to "Happily ever after" from steven universe the movie, is a great song, which talks about the progress of the characters over time and has a very beautiful melody
I feel like you and Matt have a lot of, energetic, discussions about what to include before and during videos. Which is creating an interesting style for each video.
Thanks for reacting to it! If you see this I recommend listening to cover Saku-Chan's of it on YT. It's so much better! And also for context their fellow diamond who was like a daughter to them so that's what was going on.
Patti Lupone (who voices Yellow Diamond here) is amazing!! I fell in love with her singing right away and I'm glad you like her singing too!! ❤️ Glad to see you do this song, I feel like I've seen it in the comments quite often recently!
I think you should check out "Love like You" next. I'm surprised it hasn't been recommended yet since it's without a doubt one of the best songs in the show and I think you'd like it a lot best on how you ranked other songs.
I loved your observation about the similarities between this song and Other Friends! I'd never thought about that, and it's a really interesting point given the relationship that these characters eventually have in the story.
Haha, super late on this but, It does sound like show tunes, if its Patti LuPone that’s what can be expected I guess. She’s a living legend, she’s been performing on the stage since her early days in Juilliard and even originated a few roles on broadway. She’s my favorite singer hands down, and her vocal range is crazy! As of now, she’s back on broadway belting out “Ladies Who Lunch,” its great.
Take your time with getting to the main series, I'm sure we're always willing to wait for it! Plus, I really enjoy reactions to just the songs, but I'm very excited for you to watch the series and to see you try to break down the show as a whole.
The diamond where given an older sound for their songs because they are ancients, so they where given the sound of old quartets, and spinel is based off of early animation, this can be seen in her movements and her singing reflects this as well
I think it's a song about someone who wants to pretend that they don't have feelings, that they're not sad, that they've got their emotions in check, and asking the other also get their own feeling in check and move on. It's in accord with the ideology of the Diamonds in the show, an emotional purity and a very pragmatic mind, the idea of a society were people all do their duty and obey to a higher purpose, putting their individuality aside. But progressively, Yellow Diamond has to open up to reach Blue were she's at (grieving, emotionally vulnerable), and ends up showing and realizing that she's also "blue", that she too hasn't really been through the grieving process, and you can infer that her earlier attitude is her way to distance herself from her emotions, that being cold and callous is what she turns to in order to avoid feeling blue and losing control.
This is such an amazing song and one of my favorites. I recommend listening to Happily ever after, Who we are, and Finale.. in that order because they connect.
The significance of the “What’s the use of feeling blue?” Is that blue is not only sadness, but the name of the blue woman she’s talking to. You could interpret it as “what’s the use of feeling sad?” or “what’s the use of feeling anymore?” I think that just adds a special layer to it.
I love this song because it's easy to see it as a conversation between the logical part of the brain and the emotional part, the logical part wil lbe focused on action, realizing that this self destructive behavior and mourning will set you back, all while disregarding emotion to the point of breaking easily when it finally seeps in (As seen with how she ends up seeming to falter towards the end of the song) While the emotional part (Blue) will foten forgo action and reason, instead staying in the past, but often causing itself to forget to move on as it stays anchored to those happy thoughts, but constantly resulting in falling apart when forced to face reality again. So happy I got to see you go through my favorite series :D
Could you please react to Let Us Adore You from Steven Universe the Movie? It’s a really cool song and would be fun to see a reaction to. 😄 If you do end up wanting to react to this, the Let Us Adore You Reprise is the longer and better version of the song. Thank you!
I'm always open to new suggestions but now I'm at a point where I have to make sure with every upload there is something for everyone. Number One: I look back at past upvotes and check which one has the most engagement Number Two: I ask for requests on the community tab. My goal is to take one super popular song ( most upvoted ), and another one that is random It gets competitive over there but at least its another shot to get your music heard thank you for your comment 😊 Third: We are Workin on a live streaming setup soon. To periodic live shows! Fourth: I wish I could listen to everyones requests truly!
The best part about the pearls there is that each park is performed by the same person, DeeDee Magno Hall. She's a Broadway actress like the actress for yellow diamond, Patti lupone.
This may have been said a BILLION times in the comments but I still wanna say it: So noticing it’s very showtune-themed is so astute because that’s Broadway legend, Patti Lupone, singing that song. I’m a theater nerd and I’ve been going through Steven Universe for the first time. When I heard that character sing, I was like, “This sounds like someone trying to sound like Patti Lupone...” and then I looked it up and screamed with excitement because that’s exactly who it was. This woman is insanely talented. One excellent number I recommend, if you like her voice, is Ladies Who Lunch from Stephen Sondheim’s “Company”. The melody is really good and showcases her voice well. Another I’d recommend is basically any of her work in the 2001 filmed recording of Sweeney Todd in concert. She’s fantastic as Mrs. Lovett and also played her alongside Michael Cervaris four years later in the 2005 revival of the musical. Anyways, glad you enjoyed the song! It’s quickly become a favorite of mine in the context of storytelling in the show. I adore Lupone in this role and think the scene overall is a very strong one.
an option for Steven Universe is to watch the show on your own, and record a reaction for big episodes like season finales, and make a longer video discussing your thoughts on the show. maybe after every season or just until you finish it. This lets you watch it on your own pace and enjoy it without us breathing down your neck
hooman!, a little context her name is blue, so when she sings whats the use of feeling blue ?, she is not asking whats the use of feeling sad, she is asking blue " whats the used of feeling", too, and that just makes it better
"it reminds me of other friends" made me laugh out loud. both spinel and yellow diamond are missing the same person! i would not be surprised if the similarity is intentional, or if it's just that both songs have similar references
The song can be interpreted as “what’s the use of feeling blue” which would just mean what’s the used of feeling sad or as “what’s the use of feeling, blue” blue is her name so it can also mean what is the use of feeling
I love this song because it can be painting the diamonds as both sad and yet villainous characters. They’re grieving but they are willing to set that aside to run their tyrannical rule
I have a suggestion for "my little reason why" from steven universe Im so glad you reacted to this song cuz its one of my favorites! I personally really like the diamonds vocals
I love "Who We Are" from the Steven Universe movie and I feel that not enough people talk about how amazing Uzo Aduba's voice sounds! I recommend checking it out
I really loved this song when that episode aired and it still stands as one of my favourites!! Her voice, I agree, is absolutely amazing and I love the way she carries the emotions
Also, the big blue lady is literally named Blue, so you could take the song to be saying "What's the use of feeling blue?" as in a sad emotion, or "What's the use in feeling, Blue?" like she's asking her specifically what is the use of feeling at all, just a fun play on words
that's Patti Lupone!!! she's an ICON!!! this show is soo amazing!! i watched it and fell in love with it and for bein a "kid's" show they attack a lot of grown subjects, i cried lots of times watching this show!!
Please do *“Love Like You”* from Steven Universe! It’s my favorite, so much so that I’m actually learning to play it on the piano. I think you’d enjoy it :)
The singer here is Patti LuPone. She is fantastic. If you'd like to see another example of her skill, I would recommend "Remember that We Suffered" from "My Crazy Ex-Girlfriend" Season 2 Episode 10, "Will Scarsdale Like Josh's Shayna Punim?".
I didnt really understand this song like the vocals and stuff. But i love steven universe so much they have amazing songs with multiple meanings behind it this is one of my favorite shows and it is just even more amazing when you find out the hidden meanings behind things
The reason both "Other Friends" and "What's The Use of Feeling Blue" sound so similar and so much like older music styles is to show that all three of the Diamonds (White, Yellow, and Blue) and Spinel are stuck in the past of Pink Diamond, and how far everyone else has progressed compared to them.
Oooh you should do "What Can I Do For You" !! It's another greg song (Steven's dad, the guitar guy with The Hair who sang comet) and it's somehow both super moody *and* rock-y
"that note was hit flawlessly" Bruh, its Patti Lupone. She don't fuck around. I'm not a fan of the song but that woman is a legend and deserves some respect.
I don't know if you've been told this by any other comment but the voice of Yellow Diamond (the character singing the main vocals) is Broadway star Patti Lupone.
Please watch Happily ever after song from Steven universe. There's this one part that I am dying to see your reaction for. I think people here know which part it is!
