@@toronto57 what are you reading or watching??!! Never ever said I have never heard of Rush. Ive performed a few of their songs live in bands. Ive just never dug into them cause Geddys voice threw me off. You can watch my bass videos to see if you think I suck or not. 20+ yrs of playing full time professionally says otherwise. Thanks buddy.

Cleveland was the first city that gave them radio play. There’s a special connection with the town. And we’re grateful. Today Rush is finally given the respect they’re due after 40 yrs of masterful compositions and top tier musicianship. In their 50’s, and after playing for 3hrs ....these three virtuosos killed it! Any young rock musician in a band today can only hope one day to reach such a pinnacle of mastery with a catalog of great original music spanning 4 decades.

The "tag" at the end was a tiny snippet of an older song of theirs called "Cygnus X-1" from the 'A Farewell To Kings' album from 1977. That song is nearly 11 minutes long.

It’s hard to fully appreciate this performance of Working Man without knowing the original studio version or earlier performances very well. Their variations and playful improvisations show the depth and breadth of their talent and work ethic. This song became their standard encore for years, perhaps in large part because it was their first song to hit in America, beginning in Cleveland. They always appreciated and respected their fans everywhere and the City of Cleveland in particular for launching their opportunity for real success. It was the start of their lives and career together. We should all thank Cleveland for that, and maybe one day forgive them for the wretched R&R Hall of Fame.
@mpmlopes

IIRC back in the early 70s, when Rush was starting, a radio station in Cleveland picked up this specific song and added it to their rotation, and that was what gave Rush the opportunity to break into the US, and go from playing in local Toronto clubs into touring the US as support act for Kiss (who were also starting at the time). That's why they have this connection with Cleveland, and specifically why playing Working Man in Cleveland is special for Rush.

Yep, this is 2 years away from the band's end due to Neil's health issues. Geddy's voice, as I mentioned, has been tempered with age, and his upper range has been limited. As such, the timbre has mellowed and deepened and it's not as shrill as it was when he was younger. The Time Machine Tour was a tour for fan service, and for the guys to just play around and show off that they were masters and bad-asses to the end. Working Man is actually from their very first album, before Neil joined. The former drummer, John Rutsey, left after that album, and Neil joined, changing the band's course and sound forever. I highly recommend listening to the studio version of Working Man (and Finding My Way from the same album) just to hear the original. It's also a good way to hear the difference between a drum god and a mere mortal. John Rutsey wasn't a bad drummer. He just...wasn't Neil. The massive shift in sound between Working Man and Fly By Night lays bare the effect Neil had on the band's sound. I am honestly torn between the studio version and this live one. The former is just a simple, honest epic jam that shows off how skilled Alex already was in his early days, and the latter is just as epic, showing the maturity of their playing and techniques as well as the continued exuberance they have for their fans and music after almost 40 years of knocking it out. They just went out and had fun, adding the reggae opening and then just destroying reality in a massive three-man simultaneous solo session. :D But I gush. Because it's Rush. The riff at the end is from Cygnus X-1 Book I: The Voyage, which tells the story of a voyage of a lone explorer through into a black hole. The story concludes in the opener of the next album, Hemispheres (Cygnus X-1 Book II: Hemispheres).

Your favorite Rush Song; my favorite Reaction from You. Now, a REAL Rush fan would watch the documentary "Beyond the Lighted Stage" with their wife, child and popcorn. These three guys are not just great musicians, but great human beings. The group has been awarded 24 gold, 14 platinum and 3 multi-platinum albums. That ranks them fifth - behind The Beatles and The Rolling Stones, Kiss and Aerosmith - on the all-time list for most consecutive gold or platinum studio albums by a rock band. They have had a huge impact on many other musicians some of whom are interviewed in the doc. This film has also won many awards.

Justin, really appreciate you fitting in these Rush reaction videos (especially so early in the morning). Love the bass player perspective on the band. Its fun watching you discover one of my favorite bands. Geddy's voice has definitely changed over the 40 year career. Harder for him to hit those really high notes. You can see him really strain to get the notes out in some of their older tracks which were recorded when he had a lot more range.

In the '80s he started seeing a vocal coach because he wanted to have a longer career and he started to feel like his voice was getting strained but what you heard in the beginning was just a reggae take off of working man they were just playing around. You're right this is a very good depiction of their abilities individually and as a group but there are a lot of other songs like that. One of my favorites is where's my thing here it is has a great drum solo in the middle

At the beginning Geddy sounds different because he's singing in his speaking voice. Until the changeup into sonic attack, to borrow a phrase from Hawkwind (a band that began at the end of the 60's and is still thriving as a band that nobody reacts to).

This performance is amazing! This was at the end of the concert and the guys were in their late 50's. I would suggest listening to the original when you have time LOL It is straight rock and also excellent. When you have been performing a song since 1974 you do like to change it up a bit. They don't say that to every audience. Cleveland holds a special place in their hearts as they were trying to get a record deal in Canada and in that time period that was pretty tough to do. It was a disc jockey Donna Harper from Cleveland that first played Working Man on air and it was an instant hit and it lead them to getting a U.S. record deal. Geddy's voice did change through the years and got a bit lower. That happens with age especially when you are a professional singer. Just a FYI La Villa Strangiato, the official music video they are playing it live but without an audience. Cheers

When they were starting out in late 60's and early 70's, 3 guys from Canada that were Rush knew the key to real success was the US audience. They played gigs in Church's, Highschools and Basement Bars all around southern Ontario before gaining only limited airplay on radio stations. It was in blue collar Cleveland where workies heading in on the nighshift would pick up distant FM signals from across the border of a very distinct & new rock sound. Finally, a local radio station picked up on it and began playing the Working Man track. People called in thinking Zepplin had dropped a new track but it wasn't so. Then Neil joined the band replacing John Rutsey (he was like their Pete Best), who wasn't in for the long haul. The rest is pretty much history.

The Time Machine Tour was a cool concept. It was in 2011 which was the 30th Anniversary of their most commercially successful album, Moving Pictures. In the middle of the 3-hour concert they played Moving Pictures in it's entirety, in order. It was nuts. Some of the best live versions of their songs come from this show (IMO). Marathon, Freewill and Caravan from this show are all outstanding versions. Rush evolved musically (much to some fans chagrin). They had a keyboard dominated period in the '80s, a heavy prog period in the '70's, a more 'grungy' sound in the '90s and a pretty hard rock sound in the '00s. You've touched on a few of the eras, but at this point I'd highly recommend Marathon, from this show. Like what you are doing and like the honest assessments. Everything isn't for everybody. There's bound to be things you don't like or like less - the honesty is nice. Keep it up! I'm a crazy huge Rush fan and there are a (small) handful of their songs that make me cringe.

This is the first song that broke them into the awareness of US Radio after being played by a DJ in Cleveland from their self titled debut album. The Album was recorded before Neil Peart Joined the group and John Rutsey was the drummer on the album. Rutsey's more rudimentary drumming makes this a great song to play with since the original drum track was not memorable at all.

Rush played this concert in April 2011. They were in their early 50s!! In the early days of them touring in the 70s, they would play about 250 shows a year. That's a lot, as you may have guessed. Geddy Lee's voice had lost much of its upper register. They changed pace with in the beginning of "Working Man" to one of the genres they liked, reggae. The studio version is the closing track off their self- entitled 1974 debut album which featured their original drummer, John Rutsey (RIP). Geddy and Alex were about 20 years old. And yes, Geddy Lee almost exclusively uses his right index finger to play the bass. He also grew out the fingernail to get the pick sound. Oh, and the final few bars of this performance were from the closing track, "Cygnus X-1, Book 1" from the 1977 album, 'A Farewell to Kings,' which was their first full freedom album after the awesome 1976 record, '2112.'

Told ya so! lol I'm more used to hearing the studio cut - Geddy's voice had a harder edge on that, but he was much younger. Again, earlier stuff like this tune is harder, less progressive, interesting to see how they changed as time went on. I kind of left them after the Moving Pictures album ('81?), seemed to me they went a bit softer after that, lost some 'edge'.

At some point, between this video and a year later when you did R30 Working Man, you developed an aversion to Rush adding reggae to Working Man. You went from a delighted "It's like a reggae" in this video to "Don't like it. Not necessary. What's the point. Why? Why? Why? Just because they can?" Good gawd Justin, what has happened to you?! haha

I just rewatched this to see what you're saying. Yeah I actually like the intro reggae better. Also Geddy's voice...smh. Also Alex still looks like a Neil Young relative. When they started with the reggae the song got better when it actually dropped. Whereas it got worse when they ended with reggae. get it?? lol

Try where is my thing live , The one song if you do that would be way better for the studio version is their Opera 2112 , Cartoon version , This is the song that saved their butts , when the record company told Rush they need to do radio Friendly songs they came up with this 21 minute opus and this sent them into rock and roll heaven with out radio play , The story is about a tyrant dictatorship that does not allow music , A guy finds a guitar and brings it to the leadership to try to convince them , Geddy sings in different characters,

Totally. Chris Squire. I actually just started doing Yes Reactions. First was Roundabout and the grinding sound of that Rickenbacker, which Geddy used early on. I assumed cause of Chris.
