Rhett, this is unsolicited advice, worth what you paid for it. Working as a sideman, a track record showing you can also sing backing/harmony vocals potentially broadens your edge versus a guitarist who doesn’t. As far as the Noah Guthrie band, I’ve heard clips from a number of your videos. I really think a second singer backing him up would add A LOT to the sound. That 2nd singer should be you.

One gig is the best load out you've ever had and another you're rolling cords on the sidewalk. SMH I was lucky enough to be in a band that played Microsoft's Christmas party around 1989 or 90. It was at the convention center in Seattle. This, I couldn't believe. We drove the van onto an elevator that took us to up the floor of our stage. There were other levels with other performing acts as well. We literally drove the van to the stage, and unloaded. Of course we had to go park the van somewhere else during the performance. But I have never been in my car on an elevator before.

@Bad Guacamole No it is not. It's exceedingly rare. So if your reason for enduring the privations and poverty and indignities of a musical life on the road is to acquire fame, you definitely need a backup plan.

I think most things you do as a "job" becomes "work" at some point. What I can say is I've been "working" for 32yrs of my life and I'm just tired. I enjoy my pay (the most I've made in my life), but the stress is wearing me down. Each year the expectation grows. It's old at this point. Enjoy the journey and you'll have far fonder memories of your "work" years than I have. Trust me on this one. Blessings. :)

@akasgsvirgil9503
@akasgsvirgil9503 3 года назад
@@youpeopl_music3220 You're doing much better as a weekend warrior....trust me. Here are some fun facts about touring that most amateurs don't know about. 1. Unless you have some sort of record label push, which means your band has some tunes on the radio or some shit, you're not getting anything. You hump your own gear. You set up your own gear. You might get a 30 second line check. Your sound guy, if you have one, might get to use 5 or 6 channels on a 64 channel sound board. You might get 4 lights on a good night. And you might get to use a third or so of the PA. If all of this happens on any given night, that's a damn good night. 2. Money? Uh, no. Trust me when I say this, you're probably making more as a weekend warrior. Any money that you get goes to your food, gas, strings, sticks, heads, clothes and whatever else is necessary. If there's anything left over, which most of the time there isn't, you get to split it up. If you make $50 a night after your expenses, you're doing very, very well. 3. Unless you have some sort of label backing, you're pretty much on your own to get from show to show, which are often several hundred miles apart. Imagine humping those miles in a minivan or an 82 Pontiac Station Wagon with 3 or 4 other musicians 275 days a year. 4. Relationships? Nope. Not unless you don't have any scruples about hiring professional help or wenching the occasional bar maid. 5. But, the crowds are big, right? As a rule, no. Again, unless you're hooked up with a popular headliner, chances are you're going to play what I affectionately refer to as the "fried dough tour." That's all the carnivals, fairs and "field days" in every podunk town from Maine to Malibu. Maybe once in a while you might get a small 2,500 or 5,000 seat arena show. But, most of the time, you're playing music festivals, fairs and clubs. If you're band has the misfortune of not playing anywhere near the headline slot at music festivals, chances are you're playing for the sound guy and the roadies. 6. Good luck washing your own clothes. 7. Truck stop food. Fast food. Microwave food. I promise that inside a month, you'll probably have eaten everything on the IHOP menu at last three times and know the ingredient labels to at least 3 microwave meals by heart. 8. On the occasion that you get to sleep in a motel, you will quickly learn to bring your own sleeping bag and bug spray. If you haven't caught crabs from motel sheets, you've never been on tour. Happiness is being forced to fumigate your ride because someone caught crabs. 9. That guy in your band that you think is a really great guy and really funny? Yeah.....that's going to change. The road is the #1 reason why bands break up. 10. After the first 30 or so shows, your numb. The music doesn't stop. You have to play it with equal enthusiasm night after night. Every song gets stale after playing every night for weeks at a time. These are just the highlights. Its a job and its a grind. There are times where it can be fun. But, its not the "dream job" that you think it is.
@Wheelhousebandetx
@Wheelhousebandetx 3 года назад
@@akasgsvirgil9503 I’m gonna quote one of my favorite singer songwriters Shawn Mullins. “Yea man but ain’t it a blessing just to do what you wanna do?” With all that considered you get to make music and that is an amazing opportunity. Isn’t the grind that sharpens the sword?
@akasgsvirgil9503
@akasgsvirgil9503 3 года назад
@@Wheelhousebandetx Or ruins the blade. You see, that's just it. You're not really doing what "you wanna do." Sure, you get to make music but, its always on someone else's terms, someone else's music and by someone else's rules. That's what it means to be a professional musician. Im not saying that its the worst job on the planet. Far from it. But, its not the glamorous, never ending party filled with laughs and excitement that everyone thinks that it is.
@Wheelhousebandetx
@Wheelhousebandetx 3 года назад
@@akasgsvirgil9503 I suppose you don’t know how others shoes feel..etc. I would however like to point out that I would take any crap outdoor gig any day over clicking that mouse around a spreadsheet for 10 hours a day. Music drives my existence. I will say that I have become a lot more familiar with Noah’s music via your series so he needs to thank you for that. Also, you are a great resource for gear info and your vids are entertaining if not informative. All I can say is this. It may be their music and their rules but it’s still playing music and that’s better than a day of literally any other job on the planet.

Thanks for yet another great video. Always enjoyable to watch, and fun. So you're really getting alot of value from your Helix i see. I can really understand how more & more "daily life on the road" touring musicians find value with these top end processors, as you said, it makes things so much easier, with all the other things you have to contend with .... and of course, it sounds killer, which is the most important thing. Ah, the joy of moving heavy cases or instruments. Band I used to be in used a real Hammond with rotary speaker. When we moved the thing just prior to our very first show our keyboardist's thumb got crushed between the unwieldy mass of the Hammond and an unforgiving wall. He did his best during the show, but it just didn't sound the same as in rehearsal.

I adore these videos Rhett. It’s funny because I first learned of you from Rick’s channel and for whatever reason I assumed you to be more of a metal player lol. Myself I’m into the whole weird progressive metal guitar freak stuff but I legitimately appreciate every kind of music. I was really impressed with your band, the dynamics were awesome. As a former touring musician myself I can first hand verify that your style of music can sneakily (is that a word?) be some of the most difficult music to pull off live. I love my 200 bpm shred songs as much as the next guitar nerd, but it’s honestly really tough to hold back from overplaying and pay closer attention to the dynamics. I was always blown away by that but here you guys pulled it off flawlessly, it’s truly an identifying mark of a good solid band. You guys are that. And wow Noah’s voice is ridiculous, in a good way. Hope you guys are safe, love your content and now I’m a fan of your band! Also makes me think about trying out the Helix. It’s either that or quad cortex for me, I want to go more digital.

I absolutely love that the Mayor welcomed the band to his town. Shows how appreciative people in smaller towns are when a band makes the effort to visit.

Dude... is it even legal to play blues in a cable knit sweater??? (For the record, I had to ask my wife if that was the right description) Great vlog as usual, my friend!

I saw the link to this video in the Helix group on Facebook, so I clicked it - mostly out of boredom. So many people in there are into metal, but Holy Hell, man! This is so up my alley! I was hanging on every note. The helix is a great piece of equipment and I've been curious about the PC because I just run mine through my amps, but your tone is dripping from your fingers, dude! Plus, you're a talented documentary film maker. Trust me- I'm an editor. I'm going to download your patches now and try them out. Again, the band is killer!

I love the contrast between the tour bus/eighteen wheeler and the van full of gear with four guys stuffed into whatever room remains. I’ve seen a few of the “Band Box” RV type trucks of various sizes out on the road (No... I just haul tanks of assorted goop around.), and they seem like a good compromise between pricy opulence and fingers crossed poverty. Love these videos, Rhett.

Ok, I have to say it: that drummer wails. Please pass it along. You guys sound hella tight, like click track precise. Man, you guys gotta get up to Chicago...or at least within a days drive. Nashville? I got friends there and go down quite a bit, so maybe I can catch you there. Just fantastic man. -Aaron

Love the venues. The last one had a clearly bassier sound. I was in love. It looked a lot more intimate as well.
