We all know the Beatles: John, Paul, George, and … Pete? While Ringo Starr is obviously the drummer who played with the Beatles on all of their albums, he was not their first drummer. That honor (or dishonor) belongs to Pete Best, and Best is far from the only member of a famous band who was kicked out right before the band hit it big. From the member of The Who that still has to answer when people ask “Who Are You?” to the legendary metal guitarist who did just fine after being fired from Metallica, let’s take a look at some musicians who were kicked out of groups just before they made it big.

@@herculesbrofister265 as a drummer I kinda like Lars (just not the damn snare In St Anger) because the drums aren't meant to be flashy they are the glue. While it won't be as advanced as Slipknot or bands similar (or you know.. Meshugga) it doesn't have to be. It just needs to hold it in place and that's why I like Lars. The way he drums is simplistic but it makes a good bind with the guitar, bass and singing and by AJFA and Black album he did pretty damn good. But hey that's just my opinion but what do I know...

I would argue he was the luckiest person in history. He was in the right time and the right place to have been able to be a part of the greatest rock band of all time at its inception. Clearly, he wasn't up to the task of helping the Beatles get to the next level. To anyone who would argue with me otherwise, please point me toward the highlights of Pete's post-Beatle career. I wouldn't say Paul Di'Anno got kicked out of Iron Maiden before they got big; he was on TV appearances on Top of the Pops (the first live rock performance since '72, too) and their debut was #4 on the UK album charts (and Killers hit #12). They were already big when he got the boot (they just got bigger).
@Djarra
@Djarra 6 лет назад
DiAnno went before they got real exposure in the US. 'Killers' was a modest success but 'NotB' got a lot more exposure. In part this was due to Capital restructuring Harvest, the US label, and pushing Maiden as metal where as 'Killers' was mostly found in the Prog section.
@Kylora2112
@Kylora2112 6 лет назад
They were already huge in Europe and Japan with Di'anno. Just because they hadn't broken into the US doesn't mean they weren't big. They were already mainstream at home and continental Europe. That's like saying Aria isn't big even though they're the #1 rock band in Russia or Die Toten Hosen aren't big because they're *only* huge in Germany.
@Djarra

Yes they were big here in the UK, but Grudge is American. Although really it was 'Number of the Beast' that propelled them to real mainstream success. Even knocking Barbora Stiesland from the number one slot on the album chart.

I played drums with Alannah Myles for 2 years, (1986-1988), but she, Dave Tyson and/or Chris Ward hired Jorn Anderson to play on her first lp, which was released in 1989. Jorn had a better track record than I did, which I suppose was the reason. But I played all of those songs for two years, and I believe that I had a lot to do with those grooves. For instance, when she first played "Lover of Mine", (at a club call TGIF, in Toronto, in 1988), I could hear a big time ending for the last chorus, so I played it loud and heavy. Alannah left the stage, and later asked me, "How could you play so loud in a beautiful soft ballad like this?" I said, "I thought the ending needed it." And sure enough, when you hear the final version, it rocks out....just the way I played it. The other obvious one is "Just One Kiss". I suggested and played the 'shots' for every word of "Just One Kiss", which makes the hook. Rick Skol

Originally the Dead Kennedys were a quintet: Jello Biafra, East Bay Ray, Klaus Flouride and Ted Slesigner were joined by a guitarist named 6025. 6025 left the band before their first record, due to the usual "musical differences." Vini Lopez and David Sancious from Bruce Springsteen and E street Band Vini was the original drummer and David originally played keyboards for the Boss and are on his first two albums. However, in 1975, the label fired both of them against Springsteen's wishes and replaced them with Max Weinberg on drums and Roy Bittan on keyboards.

Matt Fallon was in Skid Row in 1986 before he was kicked out, he was later replaced by Sebastian Bach in 1987. After that, Matt joined Anthrax and allegedly wrote lyrics to 'Spreading the Disease' but was left uncredited. Both bands would later make it big without Matt. He also formed his own band called Fallon, the name was chosen because it was recognized due to his previous bands. They recorded some songs to a self titled album in 1991 that went unreleased as they disbanded shortly after. The album was later released in 2015.

Maiden was starting to get big during The Number of the Beast, as they were still supporting acts for larger bands such as Judas Priest and Scorpions during that tour. It's been heavily debated that Burr quit or was fired after the 1982 tour, but Maiden's success hit the sweet spot after Nicko took over as drummer.

@@mr.gilbert2790 I looked it up. First thing that came up was some LGBTQFU2BOOHOO bullshit. But the definition of real pride is basically satisfaction of ones own achievements. Why shouldn't he be proud for his own accomplishments? You probably don't understand that because you've never achieved shit, then again I haven't amount to much in my own life so i can't really talk big but i do know how to give respect to people who clearly earned it. Is the military right about everything? Fuck no, but they still do the dirty work you and me to live "normal decent lives" whatever that means, otherwise we'd get taken over by...well anyone really. And here's the thing, i know human nature those people over there would do the exact same thing to us if we were in THEIR position and they would be the one's taking our resources and shit. Sorry but in the real world nothing is kumbaya my lord kumbaya. It's survival of the fittest and it still applies to humans as well as animals which we fucking are. Speaking of brainwashing, you probably believe in "THE MAN!" Oooh scary, kinda like the boogeyman, because they both don't exist. I wish we can live in a oh so perfect world where everyone can share, have peace, love and basically take part in a worldwide circle jerk of happiness. That's not gonna happen, peace never lasts, love doesn't exist, and everyone is stingy so no one shares, and most people are fucking miserable. And yes we live in a system that disposes military age men for rich people's personal gain the same shit that's been going on since the beginning of mankind, different day. wtf do you want me to do about it? @@mr.gilbert2790 "You think pride is killing innocent civilians" Yes becuse everyone in Iraq and Afghanistan is a civilian... I mean terrorists are technically civilians... but are they innocent? No. " just to take their oil and implement banks into their countries to make them poorer and the rich richer." Come up with a new material people of your ilk were saying this shit for 300 years and every time you had a chance to shine you became even worse (Stalin, Mao, Pol Pot, Ho Chi Mingh, Robspierre etc...) "Killing other people for a rich man's cause, killing people so companies can sell weapons" If companies love to kill people how do they profit? I mean who are they selling products to if everyone is dead? War in Iraq has nothing to do with oil or selling weapons etc... it is due to bad policy that was implemented decades ago like petrodollar where America has sold its economic independence to Saudi Arabia and Qatar. But majority of people who love to talk politics tend to be shallow people with 0 knowledge of strategy, tactics and geopolitics its much easier to parrot bay area slogans. Your country is not in the pockets of bankers and corporations but Saudi Arabia, Qatar and China who are doing what they are doing for religious and ideological reasons... Corporations are profit driven and profit can only be obtained in a market and market is nothing but masses of people. NBA has fucked American people to please the Chinese market so the so called "corporations" actually have a master its called the CHINESE. I have my own story about this. I was in a band in the early 90s called "Fuzz Bucket". We did OK, but never really got huge or anything. Our drummer however was in a second band "Effigy" who where kind of a Pixies/Goth thing (Fuzz bucket where a kind of metal/turbo-punk thing), and eventually left fuzz-bucket which ended our band. Anyway I was kind of dismissive of Effigy but they did do pretty great shows. Anyway there was a bit of stress in the band, and at one point I was asked if I wanted to join to replace their bassist. I turned it down, partly because I was friends with the bassist and didn't want to cross her, and secondly i didnt think Effigy had a future. Boy was I wrong about that. They went on to have a series of top ten australian hits, world tours and filmclips and all. Last time I saw them before they finally broke up, there was somewhere north of 1000 screaming girls in the room, and they where like gods. I shoulda taken the gig lol

One story I heard about Glen Matlock, which may or may not be true, is that the band was getting increasingly tired of him because he didn't "fit in". But the straw that broke the camel's back was when it came out that Matlock was a closet Beatles fan... It's too bad they traded him for Sid; Matlock could really play, but Sid was complete poser on bass. Legend says the Sex Pistols couldn't play their instruments, which is bullshit; the evidence is on their album, which is very well-played and features Matlock. *Sid* couldn't play, and the public assumed the rest of the band was like Sid.

One of the saddest ones ever was "Glenn Cornick" original bass player for Jethro Tull" what happened to him is worst then Pete Best- Jethro tull made their 3rd album "Benefit" and was on a Amerian tour for 4 months- it went very good they opened up for Led Zep and did their own gigs , everything was going great they were about to go home and record Aqulung - but on the last day in America the band was to meet at JFK airport to go home, when glenn got their the manager meet him there told him he is out of the band and gave him a one way ticket back home to England- Yup just like that- and why? Only because Ian Anderson wanted his childhood friend Jeffery Hammon to be in the band thats it- Glenn Cornick did nothing wrong The band did not have the guts to tell him face to face they made the manager do it and Glenn Went from nothing to having it all and thinking he was good friends with everyone to having to go home tell his family and friends he is out of the band when just 9 days before that he wrote his mother and brother telling them how great the tour went. Don't forget Gidget Gein from Marilyn Manson. He did the bass on "Portrait of an American Family" and got kicked out on the Christmas eve... right before they made it. Gidget was just as responsible for the whole "Spooky Kids" image as Brian (MM) was. Gidget was the one who (arguably) had most of the artist inspiration for the whole thing. He went on to work as a "bag boy" (a guy who picks up dead bodies for the coroner Dept.) in Florida before overdosing on Heroin about 10 years ago. I was lucky enough to meet him right before he passed away. He was a cool, sociable, humble guy (no "rock star" BS whatsoever) and a ridiculously talented multi-medium artist (known for his "Gollywood" art) and but a deeply troubled soul. R.I.P. Gidget.

He didn't like the direction of the band so he left, replaced by Burton Cummings, and the Guess Who skyrocked to fame. Fast forward and Randy Bachman, who had left the Guess Who on his own terms, was going to start a new band. They called themselves Brave Belt and released two albums with Chad Allen as the lead singer. They had a minor hit in Canada. After the second album, Allen, again not liking the direction of the music left the band. They recorded a third Brave Belt album, without Chad Allen, but decided to rename the band. That 3rd album became the first Bachman-Turner Overdrive album.
