Life on the road can be stressful, as countless rock songs and biographies have attested to. But a lot of musicians seem to go out of their way to make things as difficult as possible for their roadies, hotel staff, and even their fans. Some like to absolutely trash their hotel rooms, while others make ridiculous requests of what must be available to them at every stop. In addition, some bands have become infamous for their wildly inconsistent live shows, the quality of which may vary due to how much the band has been drinking or whether they’re currently feuding. Let’s take a look at some bands who are absolute nightmares on tour.

Metallica is one of those bands that do take care of their guys, hence the reason why they've apparently been able to retain many of the same crew members since the late 80's/early 90's. That is one of the luxuries of being a multi-million dollar band, though: being able to reward everyone handsomely for their service. Another short anecdote, because I'm reminded of it: I worked with a guy who did carpentry/stage construction for Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band, back in '07-'08, I wanna say. He told me that on the European leg of the tour, Springsteen took every weekend off to fly back home to the States to see his kids. The kickback of that was, instead of just a bunch of guys sitting around with their thumbs up their asses, Springsteen handed down $3,000 bonuses to every single member of his crew to "do whatever they wanted while he was away". So essentially, during these breaks, his crew took some time to drive out of fly all over the map and just generally see the sights. My co-worker, in particular, claimed he flew out to Spain and Italy, consumed the local cuisine, got drunk etc etc you get the picture. Some of the guys didn't even spend their $3,000; they just pocketed it, every weekend of the tour. Imagine what those dudes' net looked like at the end of their fiscal year with that sort of treatment goin on. I'm not really the biggest fan of "The Boss" in the world, but that definitely made me respect the guy a lot more.

I saw Metallica years ago in Dallas. Sadly, James hurt his back shortly before they were to come on. The 3 remaining members came out on stage and made the announcement and asked everyone to be cool as they will play, however, with a sub singer. They also asked everyone to retain their tickets as they would reschedule the concert and ensure those tickets were available for a trade in at no cost. When James recovered, they kept kept their word and put on a mighty show! That right there is why they are the one and only might might mighty Metallica!

Given the fact that they play to hundreds of thousands of people on many different venues around the world, the hauling of their massive expensive equipment and the fact that they're potential targets for ambulance chasers, I'd say they're REALLY SMART in their approach. They also take care of their own personnel and have earned the status to ask for anything that makes them feel as comfortable as at their own homes. They're old enough and been in the game long enough to perfect it. Even though I stopped listening to them back when the Black Album happened, I'm still very happy for them and very much espect what they've achieved. More power to them.

David Lee Roth explained that when they asked for a bowl of M&M's in one specific color in their room, on their rider, it was an initial indicator of whether the organizers took shit seriously. It was done for a reason. People die from equipment, pyrotechnics and structural shit. They wanted to make sure that the venues were paying attention to details. And I believe him. @ajalonzo2705
@ajalonzo2705 5 лет назад
2:12-2:50 alright i get that sounds like a lot but you gotta understand something. Metallica brings their own stages to venues. They utilize the space of a venue, and then will bring their own stage platforms, beams, speakers, monitors, scaffolding, screens, and all the wires hardware and manpower required to set up and tear down. The gear they play on tour can fit into about half or 3/4 of one of those trailers, all the guitars, basses, drums, amps; the rest is stuff for the stage set up and the crew. They're so demanding because they employ their own workforce to be the stage hands. The band is often on first name basises with their workers too. The grueling hot and heavy work the stage hands gotta do has to have some perks, and having food provided, rest areas, and all the other things is metallica taking care of their employees. So, yes it's a lot to ask for, but it's not because they're a bunch of prima donnas; they're providing safe and ideal work for employees and a spectacular show every night that they perform.

@bobhawke7373 4 года назад
Dan Nullmeyer Yeah man. They do. I know this. I’ve been listening to them since the early 80’s and have been to 14 live performances. I’ve spoke to numerous members of their staff. I’ve watched metclub videos where their touring roadies, instrument experts, Tour management personnel, etc are all interviewed talking about their life and work on the road with the band. Metallica are the greatest live touring band.......without question......ever. No one comes close. It’s a massive show and it’s been massive since they outdone Ozzy Osborne night after night when they last supported in a tour before becoming the live beast everyone knows. And that was 33 yrs ago so they’ve kind of perfected the way to do live shows. Metallica will literally tear down the audio equipment of a venue if they must, install their own and then reinstall the venues audio when they leave if they deem the venue audio is where they want theirs. Do you really think James Hetfield just lets random guys from various countries tune, service and handle the 6 to 8 guitars he uses each show? You think Lars Ulrich just assumes some local will get the pyrotechnics timing right with the local lighting and sound guys he’s using. And the local sound guy. Yeah Metallica will be fine with his interpretation of how they should sound. Metallica should just use corrective service labour in the area to set up their rotating, rising heavily engineered stage setups. Don’t worry about experts who do it again and again. It’ll be fine. Of course Metallica is a huge deal and a huge set up that involves a massive touring crew. Their tours go for years, but only months without break. So if You are in their crew it’s like a 12 week on( away)4 weeks off(back home) kind of deal at times. I think it’s great that Metallica is so professional that they ensure all their staff are professional and to show respect to their staff they will not tour a city unless their professional staff are given professional level treatment.

Metallica is the opposite of Guns n Roses-they want to be cool to everyone, which can create a logistics and supply nightmare when you are Metallica. And after the thing with GnR, I can understand wanting the huge insurance. Why have some jerk touring partner band get your stuff trashed and then you have to foot the repair costs? And besides, it's not like you can go without insurance anyway-pretty much that is the first thing you must get to have a tour or festival.

kicky_sam_49 Indeed. As is the need for several business offices. Tour managers need to have a workspace to manager and direct, they need a place to cut checks for the crew and monitor payroll, they need places to work with local officials on permits and insurance coverage, and they need a place for planning ahead for the next stop on a tour. It may be a quartet of musicians playing music, but a stadium band is a large business in every aspect of the word.

This is a multi-million dollar affair to launch these massive shows with giant video screens, pyro, lighting rigs, and extensive audio setups and crew to run it all. And they continue to bring in the ticket sales anywhere they go, and do everything to justify the cost of their tours. I'm sure the Rolling Stones put on just as large of a show with just as many people working backstage to make it happen.

More in the early and was basically clean by the late 80s (not like the rest of them) and that show in Montreal that they referenced. The audio equipment was damaged in the show and Axl could not hear himself and told the crowd a few times if it couldn't be fixed that wouldn't be able to perform. After about 4 songs, they told the crowd and promised refunds and to come back another time. That part was not mentioned in this list because if it was, it wouldn't sound dramatic enough.

At least that thing with Van Halen and the brown M&M's wasn't mentioned (a contract clause specified there be a bowl of M&M's with all the brown ones removed). This sounds stupid, but was put there for good reason. The contract was long, dense and at least somewhat focused on safety. They figured that if the venue couldn't get the M&M clause right, they couldn't be trusted with the rest of it. Canary in the coal mine thing.

Metallica must arrive in a city, prepare, play, and then leave in a relatively short period of time. Maybe a week or less? Obviously they have a lot of people working for them. Are they supposed to send people out beforehand to every city, tasked with the job of finding out who does security in that place - then hiring people, going through whatever are the local customs and tax laws etc. - and find out the best place for catering, then organise their own parking, etc. etc. etc.? Give me a break! It makes much more sense for local people to do all that stuff, and I seriously doubt Metallica are the only band with those types of requirements, so most big venues in most big cities probably have all that stuff streamlined for the occasions when a big act comes to town. I'm sure the cost of it all comes from our ticket prices, but I for one am happy to pay it if it enables Metallica and their staff to concentrate on doing their jobs; which is putting on the best show possible. I'm sure that's a lot easier when they don't have to worry about trivialities like eating, sleeping, parking, setting up the pyrotechnics, and everything else they have to do. I suggest that one of the reasons they're such a big success is that their shows always go well as a result of their requirements. Bad call Grunge...

@rastanz
@rastanz 5 лет назад
@@snakeknife7518 I'm a fulltime touring musician and yes, I can relate to the spoils and treatment, maybe not as vast and as royal as Metallica but still treated decently. The agent will usually only take bookings where both agent and venue owner are confident that the artists will fill the seats meeting the venues capacity, if the agent think a certain number isn't satisfactory to minimum requirements then they won't take the job, the venue also has to meet the minimum requirements of the production rider too, stage size area, riser and height restrictions for overhead lighting, power access for any backup generators and so on. They also have to deal with the biggest factor, the noise restrictions of when they can have a sound / line check, the maximum db's the sound engineer is restricted too and the cut off time's and curfew of the concert itself before the council start handing out noise restriction fines. It would make no sense plus and it would be a waste of production and money if the production catered for a 50,000 capacity crowd then suddenly a 19,000 arena where only half the shows production was utilized or could fit in it's parking lot. There's really no time for venturing out to buy your own food unless it's listed and confirmed on the tour itinerary, the crew, musicians, even the drivers are on rotation 24hrs where they're either working or resting... drivers drive from point A to point B, after that they're catered for with food and sleep, that's it for them, job done, don't need to see them till the show is all packed up and ready to leave for the next venue. There's only a specific time crew can have access to the venue, you can't just roll up any-time of the day and say "we're here, for the show"... the venue has their own people and staff that need to clear everything before one can even start unloading. The load-in crew need to be on point during set up, that wont happen if one of the engineers or one of the loaders are missing because they took off to taco bell, production would halt and suddenly soundcheck is delayed and pushed back screwing up the days itinerary because of two dumb asses went on a food hunt for a couple of hours. That is why there is catering for the entire production so they can comfortably do their duties and eat on the premises without the worry of starving on the job, venues also provide dedicated drivers called "runners" just in case there needs to be an emergency store run for parts, replacement gear or to fill some wild requests.
@paw_wall
@paw_wall 4 года назад
My business law professor told us a story how Van Halen would have a clause in their venue contract “a bowl of m&m’s to be provided for David Lee Roth with no brown m&m’s”. The reasoning behind it was to insure that the venue had read the entire contract so that they followed all the necessary safety measures required for handling their stage equipment. In the event that something were to go awry, the band would know the venue breached their contract having not read it in it’s entirety due to the brown m&m’s.

@Tomcat82

All that stuff for Metallica isn’t just for the 4 band members. Metallica employs dozens and dozens of road crew workers at every show they play for good reason, and they have to take care of all them. These people build their huge stages and hook up all the lighting and pyrotechnics. Metallica relies on the technical competency of their massive road crew to ensure every show goes smoothly, and James praises their road crew during every single show. Case in point: when Metallica performed at the Grammys with Lady Gaga, they weren’t allowed to have their own road crew involved. They had to use the Grammys’s stage crew to do everything. And guess what happened? The Grammys’s amateur sound guys fucked up and ruined the whole performance. James’s vocals weren’t coming through the PA system because shit wasn’t hooked up properly. He was super pissed. Never again, me thinks. So yeah, that’s why.

My husband has been a sound tech engineer for over 25 years. He is usually a liaison between the buildings, staff and the bands, who bring their own equipment and sound guys but might need assistance if something breaks, needs replacing, etc. Of the huge acts, he said that when Billy Graham, the "presidents" pastor, was there, his people were completely crazed, doing more drugs and alcohol than any group they'd ever seen!! ( I'm assuming Graham had no idea). The ironic thing was Ozzy Osborne and Co. usually drank bottled water. This was after a lot of the great bands had started getting clean, but still. Roadies work unbelievably hard, never seem to sleep and are the unsung heroes of everyone who goes on the road. They handle anything and everything, but I guess listening to Billy preach every night sent them over the edge. (anyone who worked for Graham and sees this, I'm not judging or accusing Christian's, I'm just relating what seemed a hilarious and ironic anecdote at the time).

You said "sheesh" to the Metallica one but I nodded my head the whole time because it's awesome how much they plan for the shows and how much they care about the fans and the crew

Guns n Roses turned it all around on the Not In This Lifetime tour. On stage on time. 2.5-3hr performance, and Axl is still magic on stage.

Metallica is actually quite down to earth! They try to organize their concerts in terms of security and be good to the staff! So why is that bad?

Most of these demands are made to make sure that the contract has been read thouroughly. "Hey, if they managed to put exactly 200 red m&m's in this bowl. They probably handled our multimilliondollar equipment also correctly and no one is going to die when we set parts of the stage on fire."

Some things are essential, heightened security, close-by venue parking and dietary provisions are a must. Performers have rigorous schedules and demands normal people don't have to deal with. We've had numerous musicians get attacked or killed on or backstage. Dietary provisions are essential because of odd sleep schedules, work hours, and physical health is key to having a performer working round the clock with little to no error.

Never took Madonna or any of these other "acts" serious. Real musicians are too busy honoring the music than themselves.

Absolutely, these over rated bands are elevated by their hero worshiping masses who have no concept of real music or reality

Pat Gannon sounds like you’re just ignorant. She’s not requesting the 6 inch flowers because she actually gives a fuck. It’s to make sure the venue is actually following the rules and doing what they’re supposed to do.

i worked at a concert where 30 seconds to mars performed, they refused to go on stage because they didn't think there were enough people in the mosh pit... delayed the show long enough to have to remove 2 songs from their performance list. and jared leto barely sung, had the crowd do most of it. at the end of the show leto pulled a bunch of people on stage, so many that it was a safety and security risk.

My brother said that when J-Lo played the Air force base he was stationed at in Germany she wanted them to re-paint the General quarters all white because she didn't either didn't like the green color or was into feng shui. I can't remember the reason. My brother actually met her qnd when he went to hold the door open for her to be a gentleman she tipped him a dollar. He handed it back to her and simply said your welcome and walked off.

Got to the point about Metallica and was really confused on why the contract rider would be considered over the top. I work as a concert producer and promoter rep, and for a band that is selling out arenas, all of these things are very much standard. I’ve ran concerts in large theaters with a 2,400 seating cap where the tour rider had breakfast lunch and dinner for well over 50 people. It takes a lot of people to run a production on the promoter and artist side, so the idea of feeding 3 meals in house catering for just over 100 people is, quite honestly, on the light side. Parking space with close proximity to the venue is important to every artist, especially buses. I imagine the 7 buses also included support acts. 14 semis is somewhat standard fare for arenas and stadiums. I dunno, all I’ve ever heard about Metallica is that they treat their entire crews fantastically well, take good care of their support bands, and are very outgoing and decently humble. It just seems like it’s still kind of cool to shit on Metallica because they’re not a DIY metal band anymore, and manage to sell out arenas. I don’t think they deserved to be on this list for the reasons specified.

Yeah, but it's not like the hotels and venues aren't CHARGING these musicians.
