The reason why the song sound kind of Japanese is actually very interesting. Atlus(the main company that publishes these games) and Shoji Meguro(main composer behind Persona/Megaten) have a philosophy that background music shouldn’t distract you from gameplay. So, they decided to write these songs in english. But, they didn't want non-Japanese audiences to be left out so, they directed the vocals in a way that they sound sort of japanese while still being english.
it "shouldn't distract players" but they still write bangers that make you stop and just listen to it (especially P5 battle themes: Take Over, Last Surprise, etc. lol)
I don’t think that’s true, I think it’s just engrish from a singer who can’t pronounce or enunciate English words correctly, it’s very common in Japanese music to use English for cool factor and it’s very common for Japanese people to speak extremely little English and this was also back in the late 2000s. Also Atlus is both the Developer and the publisher. Edit: This is the exact quote from Shoji meguro “Apologies to the Western gamers, but to Japanese gamers, because many Japanese don't speak the language and they don't understand the lyrics, the English lyrics blend in as background music. The lyrics are not distracting to the gamer, so it's convenient to use as background music. If the lyrics were Japanese, the players would probably find the music too distracting from the game. Also, [some things] just sound cooler in English." So yeah it’s just engrish cause the singer can’t pronounce the words perfectly. But you got the use of English as a background element correct.
If they didn't want the songs to distract from the games, they shouldn't have made heaven such an amazing song. I was actively avoiding shadows to listen to it more lmao
It's really funny. I kept listening to Heaven on RU-vid for a while before I got to that part in the game and as soon as it came on I was like, "Oh shit, now I understand 😢"
For Persona 3 songs, I'd recommend: Burn My Dread(Original Opening) Mass Destruction(Og + Fes Version) When The Moon's Reaching Out Stars Changing Seasons Full Moon Full Life(New Remake Opening) And if you want to do songs from the other versions of Persona 3: Heartful Cry Soul Phase(Portable Opening) Wiping All Out(Female Protagonist's Exclusive Battle Theme)
It's Going Down is a new must, it has the same power as Mass Destruction it's almost like it was always there the whole time, and only now it materialized for us to see.
I was just watching the video of you guys listening to Persona 5's music and saw this just uploaded haha. There's so many more for each of these games you all gotta check out. Sorry for the long list but there's so many more not even here that also slap. Persona 5 / Royal: - The Whims of Fate (HAS LYRICS!) (6th dungeon's main theme) - Wake Up, Get Up, Get Out There (HAS LYRICS!) (Original opening theme) - Colors flying high (HAS LYRICS!) (Opening theme for P5 Royal) - I believe (HAS LYRICS!) (Final day/ dungeon theme in P5 Royal), - Throw Away Your Mask (HAS LYRICS!) (Final boss theme in P5 Royal) - Life Goes On (school exams theme- one of the most underrated/ slept on ones IMO) - Blooming Villain (normal boss theme) - Jaldabaoth (Original game's final boss theme (Royal added an extra arc)) - Layer Cake (Weapon store theme) - Butterfly Kiss (Medicine shop theme) Persona 4: - Time to Make History (HAS LYRICS!) (Battle theme when the players don't have advantage/ambush) -I'll Face Myself (Normal and battle themes slap. One's slow and calm the other is a rock song) -Signs of Love (HAS LYRICS!) (background theme when at your house) -Heartbeat, Heartbreak (HAS LYRICS!) (Cloudy/ light rainy days background theme) -Never More (HAS LYRICS!) (Ending credits theme) -Studio Backlot/Backside of the TV (Theme for the general dungeons hub of the game before you go into a certain one)
If you're going through all the best game soundtracks, highly suggest "The World Ends With You" and it's sequel "NEO: The World Ends With You". They're about as built around their soundtracks as a game can get without being a rhythm game.
I'd love to see you guys react to the Yakuza 0 OST. Lots of banger combat themes, and there's disco! The karaoke songs in the game like Baka Mitai and 24-Hour Cinderella are a must watch.
Um akshually... there's 6 mainline persona games, haha. Persona 2 has two versions, which, unlike what you might expect, are two different games. So it's p1, p2, p2, p3, p4, p5.
They need to listen to the boss battle themes. Personally I think 4’s are some of the best. Not to say the others aren’t great, cause they absolutely are (P3 final battle themes are killer) but overall P4 gets me every time
I am living for these videos!! You guys are so fun lol. The Persona franchise is incredible, and all of the games have groovy tunes. Definitely some of the most stylish video games out there.
I love this game to death. Favorite of all time cause it changed my life. The music was a big part of it as well so I'm glad you guys enjoy it! Part 2 for sure because every single song this soundtrack has to offer is a banger.
Heaven is one of the best persona series songs that exists. It's a random one to include, but I really appreciate it. It's such a sad song and such a sad moment in the game.
barely touch the tip of the iceberg. There so much more banger in P4. Fun fact: shoji meguro has been composing music for atlus since 1995. For each game he purposely change the genres. Now he just blends them. His best and most regard work is "Aria of the Soul" each game in the Shin Megami Tensei has it own take.
honestly reach out to the truth is very fitting because something about how it's done feels like you're at a concert and everyone is just vibing along with you. if you ever play the games you'll hopefully get what I mean.
I was just thinking about "Heaven" right after reach out and was like "I hope they play Heaven next" The first time I heard this, I deadass dropped the controller after going back to the entrance of the dungeon because I was not expecting a banger during that part of the game
I found you guys from youtubes recommendations and after watching this and the persona 5 video I had to sub. Awesome work! It's so cool hearing musicians break down these songs I love so much. I love the analysis you all put in. If I can make one recommendation for another video game to try: Hades. Its soundtrack is something else and almost all one person other than the female vocals And for Persona 4 if you do another Persona 4 video Time to Make History is a must
Great reactions! Love your discussions. Hope to see Persona 3 music react cause its straight fire with LOTUS JUICE, plus its getting a remake thats coming out in less than a month!
Some backstory on the Persona series! There are 5 Main Persona stories, but only the first is just its own self contained story. The 2nd Persona was 2 split games. P3 had an epilogue for its initial remake(FES), P3 Portable added a femMC option, and P3 Reload comes out 2/2/24 P4 had a PSP remake called Golden that added an entirely new plotline, and 2 Fighting games (P4 Arena & P4A Ultimax) P5 had The Royale as its remake adding new plot AND and epilogue, along with the Beat-em-up Strikers and the recent Turn Based Strategy game Tacticia. P3 and P4 had a crossover in Persona Q, and P5 joined them in PQ2. 3-5 also have the "Dancing" rhythm games to them. It used to be a sub-series under the Shin Megami Tensei series under ATLUS, but the success of Persona 3 had them drop it from subsequent titles. They still share the Persona/Devil designs with the rest of the SMT series however.
p3/4/5 are all self contained stories too. Like yeah they take place in the same world and have references and cameos to previous (and kinda even future) games, but they have no continuity in terms of storyline, and characters are always new
Duuuude, your videos are awesome! I like the way you guys enjoy anime and game songs, not to mention that you choose the right ones. I'd like to recommend Umineko no naku koro ni openings. Umineko is a visual novel series about murders, mystery and magic. It has some inspiration on "And there were none", book from Agatha Christie. Actually, there's an Umineko anime, which songs are awesome too, but the visual novels are most famous.
Check out From P4: Heartbeat Heartbreak Your affection Never more The Almighty I'll Face Myself - Battle From P3: Mass Destruction Deep Breath Deep Breath Battle for Everyone's souls Time (P3P)
5:45 it’s funny you said that, because (don’t quote me on this I read it somewhere I can’t remember,) that the performers don’t speak English, so they made them sing in English so the lyrics weren’t distracting from the gameplay
I recommend Xenoblade Chronicles, specifically: Drifting Soul, Where we Belong, You Will Know Our Names, You Will Recall Our Names and You Will Know Our Names -Finale-
Persona 4 has the a lot of good music, the game benefits a lot from main game & side games. Persona 4 Dancing - Dance! Persona Q has a lot of good music, Light up fire in the night, Maze of Life, and Remember, we got your back is some of the good ones Don’t forget the anime! Ying & Yang was so good it’s a crime the PC release didn’t include one
Should keep it up and listen to some Persona 3 music too! There's a new remake for it coming out soon, and I'd love to see your takes on more tracks from 4 & 5. All the games have incredible music Edit: They have dancing spinoff games too! I definitely suggest watching the openings for Persona 3/4/5 Dancing
The P4 OST is supposed to be more pop to go with the jazz and be a bit nostalgic while reminding you of a countryside town. At least, that is what I remember hearing. Then the Specialist and dancing at the end. Unlimited swagger.
I hope you don't look up the full lyrics of reach out to the truth. Because some parts doesn't make sense and also have some sketchy lyrics. Meguro should've let lotus juice help with that one.
The reason why Persaon 4's music is so upbeat and disco is because the previous game Persona 3 is super depressing with themes od death decay and darkness. , so much so that they made the entire premise of Persona 4 happiness and family so that people could forget about it
Hey! I hope you guys react to Persona 3 Reload Opening when you have the time. I feel like I wanna see your reaction to the music and animation because it's pretty good.
I hope yall take another look at Persona 5 again at some point. Probably my favorite game soundtrack of all time and you guys only scraped the surface with the 4 songs you listened to. This was a great video
LMAOOOOOO NOT "THAT SONG" AT THE END BROOOO IT'S BEEN LIVING RENT FREE IN MY HEAD FOR 3 YEARS EVEN BEFORE I PLAYED P4G ALL BECAUSE OF GENSHIN'S HUSBANDO VIDEO
I hope y’all give DOOM and DOOM: Eternal soundtracks a spin. Mick Gordon absolutely murdered those OSTs. More Mick Gordon bangers are in Killer Instinct as well, personal favorite is Hinnamatoom
If you react to more persona 4 songs you’ll definitely have to listen to backside of the TV remix that was in the persona 4 dancing game!! It definitely feels like a song you guys would like
Hm, this was very nice Reactions, kind of hoped for some Boss music, but maybe next time. Anyway, maybe do the Arena and/or Ultimax OSTs at some point?
"technically there's five [persona games]" FOOL! there are two persona 2 games so there are currently 6 mainline titles (excluding remasters, remakes, and new editions)
Hey, new subscriber here, hi all the way from Scotland! Really been enjoying these music reactions you guys have been doing, and if you're looking for some JRPG stuff that's a bit more out there, have a look at some tracks from the Ar tonelico games. Don't want to spoil it, but they go absolutely full-on musically. (Also, a small funny bit: at 13:24 it sounded like your full analysis of Heaven was going to be, "A lot of the sounds are really nice", which gave me a good laugh 😅)
I was watching the Persona 5 video and then saw you guys uploaded this one! Persona has a lot of good vocal songs, great instrumental ones as well. Hope you guys do Persona 3 as well, it's going to get a re-release (with new music) next month so there'll probably be a lot of content and trending videos around about that game!
