Whenever a claim is made about a rapture to heaven, I'd recommend exercising discernment, as there are reports of heavenly visions, even within occult circles. If someone asserts to have encountered Jesus and claims to "know him" yet continues to refer to him not only as capitol G "God" but also as "Creator," a designation reserved solely for the Father, it raises doubts about the authenticity of the experience. From a Unitarian perspective, I don't doubt the vision, but it is questionable whether the entity seen was truly Jesus. It would be reasonable to assume Jesus would take such an opportunity to slip in a revelation concerning his nature. I'd even say that it's not optional, as his presence alone would have conveyed that revelation. This is mere conjecture, but considering the influence of Pageau on this little corner, it seems appropriate to explore some symbolism. In scripture, the right eye, hand, etc. symbolize our sinful lusts and desires. It's intriguing that Mar Mari quickly assumed the role of a victim just two days after his right eye was stabbed (which he undoubtedly is from a judicial standpoint), portraying himself as having been persecuted for his faith rather than reaping consequences for any wrongdoing in his life. I do not condone violence, nor would wish such a thing to befall on anyone but it has to be considered that God has allowed it to happen to him. I think Mar Mari is a good rhetorician and says all the Christian things that tug on the heartstrings, but from what I've seen of him, I really see a lot of projection, hate, and vanity. One may ponder whether he had contemplated the possibility that, as insensitive as it may sound, this attack was allowed as a desperate attempt at divine correction, prompting him to repent for some lingering sin(s). I think before jumping to conclusions, we need to at least consider that perspective. Ultimately, what happened to Mar Mari is a matter between him and heaven. However, it serves as a crucial reminder for us as Christians to refrain from making quick judgments, even when faced with acts of aggression towards ourselves, as it could potentially be a form of discipline from God in our lives. Concerning liberal democracy, it often assumes the role of an idol, overshadowing the very essence of truth. Both cannot seem to coexist in this age in the way that we imagine they could. As Christians, especially Unitarians, we should be content with being a despised minority, a remnant, with a citizenship not belonging to the US or any other nation but to heaven alone. I am not worried about the woke minority or a potential Islamic takeover more than I am about the resurgence of imperial "Christianity" once in the west, assimilating the nihilism of the left, and something even worse coming along and filling its metaphysical void.
@transfigured3673
@transfigured3673 23 дня назад
folks often interpret spiritual experiences using their existing theological paradigm even if the content of the vision doesn't actually explicitly support their presuppositions
@EmJay2022
@EmJay2022 23 дня назад
@@transfigured3673 I believe this raises an important subject for discussion: the distinction between an ambiguous charismatic experience and divine revelation. I think the point of revelation is its ability to surpass and supersede our presuppositions, i.e., Saul on the road to Damascus. If someone makes such an extraordinary claim as to being in the very presence of Jesus, I expect an equally extraordinary declaration of Christ's singular human nature. I would draw a hard line in this particular circumstance.

Coming from the Muslim perspective, there's something I don't hear being acknowledged here, and I don't know how popular of an opinion this will be since many people are allergic to left-coded talking points in TLC. However, the relative peace inside the proto-Protestant European and now American empires was in stark contrast with how these empires were dealing with those outside their sphere of influence. The only reason, if you ask me, why European Christianity has been at peace with itself is because it was subsumed under a greater conquering power. Over time, what has happened is that the ideology of the empire was abstracted from its cultural root. Now, you are losing your privileged position vis-a-vis those in power, and you need to be colonised and uprooted to fit in, just like we were. Diversity and violence are correlated, unless pacified by a player strong enough to have a monopoly on violence, and power breed corruption. There's no stopping the wheel from turning, to want to stop the wheel is idolatry, righteousness is to strive for virtue through the revolutions. Respite only comes in the next life.

Where does the strength to support and defend liberalism come from? That's one of the central questions of the video and I don't totally know the answer.
@Baudelaire1821
@Baudelaire1821 24 дня назад
@@transfigured3673 I humbly suggest that "liberalism," as you conceptualize it, was a product of a specific time and place, bred from Europe's Christian past. Wanting to defend a version of liberalism where Protestantized Christians accepted their differences without the further challenges of progressivism and heterogeneous demographics is like a Democrat wanting to go back to the 90s. There's no putting the genie back in the bottle because Europe isn't what it was when the liberalism you're advocating for existed. Generally, any ideological system that succeeds in its goals destroys the environment that made it successful, and thereby destroys itself. That's why I'm much more partial to virtue ethics than political philosophy to inform my thinking.

This video was an absolute banger Sam. A comprehensive summation of the challenge to liberal democracy and our current uneasy feeling of cultural fragility. For me, your best so far. I'd add that my own take on the "meaning crisis," the tectonic plates shifting under our feet, is the dramatic degredation of relations between men and women, and the fundamental misalignment of the narrow interests of each gender, if pursued only single mindedly. And societies with lots of disaffected young men are not stable societies. Freedom relies heavily on the principles of nonviolence and non-coercion. So a way forward has to include a cultural movement that reminds men and women how much we need each other, and how wonderful a mutually rewarding relationship between the sexes can be. Humans are profoundly social creatures, and ultimately future focused. The future depends on optimistic loving people finding each other, creating families and forming children into prosocial productive adults. And we need to do all this while simultaneously making room for those we disagree with, those with different beliefs, values, and orientations. I know, a hard problem. But made practically impossible if men and women have lost their capacity to care for each other.

It was his conversion to sunnism which made him more tolerant to religious persecution. However sunnis tend to have a strange relationship to political sunnism. Hello Sam, I will preface this by saying I enjoyed your video, and I enjoy your content in general. You give very good lectures on the Church Fathers and Church history in general. I am an American convert to Shia Islam, and due to that I believe there is no compulsion in religion, and because of that we should have freedom of religion. However I also believe that without religion, or to put it more controversially, in late-stage secular liberalism, we see a complete collapse of morality and family. I, as a Muslim, would fully support a Christian Nationalist or Catholic Integralist government if it came to power. This is because systems such as those would restore, likely by force yes, but would still restore, morality and family, and I see those things as more important than the values of classical liberalism. A society where things like drag queen story hour exist, let alone have legal protection, is an utterly demonized society. A system where such depravities as childhood transgenderism are enforced at gunpoint needs to be fixed, even if that solution is not nice.

Wow! I had pretty much given up on this channel (not so much out of disagreement as of boredom - most videos addressing topics of zero interest to me), but man, did you redeem yourself here! Fantastic! FINALLY, a Christian who understands the worth and value of secular Liberalism! The only criticisms I have are about what other people said in some of the videos you used (such as Keller stating that Liberalism seeks to not impose moral values on people - simply not true) but that does not reflect on anything you said yourself. I particularly appreciate your emphasis on Truth as the highest value (although I would say that is precisely why I remain an agnostic - anyone who holds Truth as the highest value knows better than to claim they know the Truth - see Socrates on that subject). Finally, I think you are being way to easy on Islam. Christianity may have its faults, but Islam... Well, let me not get into it here. Anyway, excellent video. We must also guard against all waywardness in our use of them. For instance, *it is not right for a woman to wear her dress up over her knees,* as the Laconian maidens are said to do, because *a woman should not expose any part of her body...* I should like, too, not only that it be *forbidden them to expose their ankle,* but also that *it be made obligatory for them to wear a veil over their face and a covering on their head.”* … “Further, the man and woman each must come to the church dressed becomingly, with an unaffected walk... *Let the woman observe this further practise: Except when she is home, SHE SHOULD BE COMPLETELY VEILED, for her appearance will be dignified only when she cannot be seen.* She will never fall into sin if she always keeps modesty before her eyes, and *RETAIN HER VEIL,* nor will she lure others into an occasion of sin by baring her face.”

I realize a lot of Christians don’t really care what Muslims believe and I respect that but for what it’s worth, Muslims believe we’ve been equipped (theologically) and tasked with establishing, maintaining, and expanding the “Kingdom of Heaven” here on Earth that Jesus Christ preached about. Our scholars won’t explain this in these terms but effectively it’s what the Caliphate sought to be. A kingdom where the God of Abraham would be known and worshipped and where the guidance He gifted His servants (Moses, David, Elijah, Jesus Christ, etc) would be put into action and humanity would benefit from. Muslims believe our prophet was the final attempt at God providing humanity with this knowledge and task and I believe he is the 2nd of 2 “Anointed Ones” foretold in Zachariah 4 (the 1st being Jesus Christ) who would be instrumental in humanity achieving this. Anyways, I understand it must seem scary and strange that Muslims have such ideas and truth be told the extent of Islamic power may have already reached its zenith but for the sake of understanding one another I felt it necessary to share this. PS: Islam doesn’t seek to extinguish Christianity least of all Unitarian Christianity as our Prophet taught that it was incumbent on his successors to protect the rights of Christians and Jews because of the very legitimate status of their covenants.

1:53:28 “One of the reasons that I don’t like Catholicism or Orthodoxy…one full, unified human institution that is the one all-be all…” Multipolarity and assumptions of authority (power) vs legitimate, non-coercive (true) authority.

1:19:50 or 1:20:10 quoting Mohammed: “he who changes his religion, kill him.” I bet there has been a bunch of ink spilled on this sentence. Can one change their religion? Only in an egoic, confessional sense, arguably. Religio, that which holds you together.

@@transfigured3673To a degree and over time, perhaps. Idk. If true knowledge is only attained via initiation, we can’t ever really remove what has formed us. We can perhaps transform it? Or be transformed… But, I don’t think a tiger can change his stripes, fundamentally or at its core. Also, I wanted to say that I am doubtful of what Mohammed MEANT by that statement. Meaning & its communication is always very difficult. “Killed” seems pretty straightforward. Idk. Trying to be open-minded.

As someone who studied Islamic Law and hermeneutics for more than 7 years with university degree to back it up. This statement of the Prophet like many statements needs to be contextualized not to align it with Western Liberal sensibilities, but to genuinely understand what is being conveyed. Some Muslim scholars understand the statement to be within a time-specific context where religious allegiance equals political allegiance, and an apostate from Islam would be a political enemy incentivized by foreign powers at the time like the Byzantine empire to conspire against the Muslim state. Others understand the ruling to be only applied to Muslim societies where societal cohesion would be severely damaged by discarding the formal outward religious identification of being a Muslim like in present day Saudi Arabia, so the issue is related to preserving public order. According to that last opinion it may not apply to Muslim majority societies where religion is not the most fundamental component of identity of a Muslim ethnic group, like Azerbaijan for example which is largely secular Muslim majority country, nevermind Western countries where Muslims are a minority. Of course the ruling comes with some conditions like the apostate being presented with an opportunity for public repentance by confessing outwardly that he's returned to Islam (could be with a single sentence) even if there's a very strong suspicion it's not sincere, he's to be asked to publicly and outwardly repent for at least three days and some say indefinitely according to the ruler's discretion. And most importantly, no vigilantism, this ruling is done under a state governed by Islamic law.

The religion/secular distinction is a product of the Christian world and the Christian mind, but it is not necesarilly a dogmatic christian belief. I disagree with Holland that adopting such distinctions makes one a Christian in some sense. Non - Christians can adopt these notions as their political situations become more approximate to Christians.
