This was excellent. Once upon a time, I grew up around many, many Muslims, dated a Muslim guy in high school, thought I wanted to be Muslim ("converted") and only by God's work did I realize in 3 years that I did NOT want to be Muslim and everything about it that's wrong (though it took me another 10 years to come to Christ). I wish I would've grew up with these resources. However, I'm stronger now and will give my children a strong foundation. Thank you for your work! Praise God!

One of my most favorite passages in all of scripture. He did that for me. He saw me from the beginning and knew I would need what only He could provide. Reminds me of the question, “Can God make a rock so big that He can’t lift it?” The real question behind this is, “Can God place limits on Himself?” And we have that answer in Jesus. If God chooses to be surprised, He can be. I think He demonstrates this principle when He chooses to forget our sins- He doesn’t have a faulty memory, He just chooses to not remember.

One of the best messages I heard told at my church was the revelation of Jesus not being a demigod, rather fully man and fully god. And what did this mean? It meant that Jesus chose to be not omniscient so that he could be led by the spirit in all ways. He chose to be fully man, with the spirit being in him at all times. He gave us the perfect example of what it meant to be 100% spirit lead as flesh. So in instances where he was drawn to someone (like on the road to Damascus where he found the woman at the well) that was all him being led by the spirit and following it. Completely changed how I saw Jesus, and made me love him even more. Because he had all the power to be omniscient, but instead chose to live as a man. And that's the same reason he could go through the crucifixion without saving himself. What an awesome God we serve!

I was just about to put down Philipians 2:5- until you just outright said it🤣 This text is specifically useful for oneness theology as well. Unfortunately, in Islam, they have presuppositions that do not allow for a proper handling of the text, namely shirk. I'd ask a Muslim if Allah is made up of parts. They usually self-destruct upon pressing that Allah is said to have hands and feet etc.

I appreciate the two-nature theory that you discuss here. I also like the Augustine / Aquinas variation, in which they say the word "know" is used like in the Old Testament, when God said of Abraham "now I know that you fear God." It wasn't that God was ignorant before that moment, but that it was made real IN the moment. More in line with revealing or experiencing, in time, rather than having an intellectual knowledge. Also important to remember, when the disciples ask again after his resurrection, he says "it is not for you to know". Not "I still don't know".

Oh, I'm gonna have a field day with this one. It's well known that Muslims, like uthman, Hamza, Ali dawa and the dawah team specifically target layman Christians who are either new to the faith and haven't learned to defend their faith or the lukewarm Christians who don't take their faith seriously enough to learn how to defend it. All this guy had to do was ask the question, okay, if knowing all things is a prerequisite to been God, then why did Allah not know what Christian's believe about the trinity and think the trinity involved God the Father, Jesus, and Mary, I mean its not like Allah think sperm comes from between the backbone and the ribs. In the bible, Jesus forgives sins and heals the sick, and also gives authority to others to do the same (Matthew 9: 1 - 8), says we are to honor Him as God (John: 5: 3), and we are to pray to God as Father (Matthew 6: 9) In the quran, Jesus is just a prophet and allah is the father or no one. In the bible, Jesus says whatever God can do, He can do (John 5: 19), Jesus also says we are to pray to Him (John 14: 13) In the quran, Jesus is just a prophet. There is an even better reason than this. The word used in the passage for “know” in the original text means “to make known,” meaning, Jesus absolutely could have known when the end will eventually happen, but as with Jewish custom, it is for the Father to announce..” It was not for Jesus to “make known,” but yes, good chance Jesus knew. Great response! David Wood clued me in to something interesting that's analogous to an aspect of Muslims' own doctrine. They believe that the Quran is the uncreated, eternal speech of Allah. This is interesting, because Allah is not meant to have "partners"- yet here's the Quran, an eternal, coexistent partner with Allah. On top of that, this speech (his "words") "takes on flesh" in the form of the printed Quran composed of paper, ink, and glue. This physical Quran can be destroyed ("killed"), but no Muslim would believe that this would mean that Allah's eternal speech had been destroyed. And as to whether one might view this physical Quran as "just a book," ask any Muslim how they would feel about it being burned!

In addition, another response I've heard (though not sure if someone has more details that might invalidate it): -To 'know' something can, in some circumstances, be used 'judicially': as in, to 'decide' something. I don't think this is used much of the English word 'know' nowadays, though. -For example, a judge may decide how much of a punishment to give to a thief: he, in this sense, 'knows' the thief's sentence. While it is not the necessary reading, it may also be a potential meaning of the passage that Jesus indicated that the Father held the role of deciding that Day: akin to how Jesus also noted that the role of Judge was His (all judgment was given to the Son, from John 5:22). Not 100% sure on this one, so take this interpretation with a grain of salt, but wanted to mention it just in case. For more concrete things, though, Jesus claiming to be the Way, the Truth, and the Life, to be Alpha and Omega, to be the specific and specially prophesied Son of Man from Daniel 7 (in His response to the Sanhedrin in Mark 14): it's pretty darn clear Jesus claimed to be God. Then, He rose from the dead, making it pretty darn clear He's God. It's unwise to use (as the Muslim fellow in the video did) a passage we're not 100% sure how to understand to try to debunk abundantly clear passages. :) Rather, the other way around is good: we should use what we can understand super clearly in order to interpret passages that are difficult to understand at first glance. ---- Thanks for these!

Thanks for this answer, I’ll have to remember this! Additionally I pray the guy who was unable to answer is okay. It’s by God’s mercy that I’m able to have an answer if presented with this question now, instead of encountering the question before the answer. If I were that Christian I know I would’ve felt like I failed God by not being able to answer or something. I pray this didn’t cause him to question his faith, or feel ashamed, but instead drew him closer to God and have him desire to seek God’s word further, to be prepared for any manner of argument

Just remember this when it comes to Jesus. God cannot die, man cannot save. Christ had to encompass both natures of God and man and unify them in one person

I agree with you about Jesus' humanity being a voluntary restriction of his divine attributes. However, there is also the idea that Jesus' bowed his heart to the Father's authority, and at the point where Jesus is speaking, He had not yet been given the authority that the Father handed over to him after the resurrection. I think it's safe to say that Jesus knows NOW when his second coming will be.

Actually, the phrase "only the Father knows" was a saying in Jewish wedding culture. The son would get everything ready before the wedding. He would go to the father and show the prep. Then the father would set the time of the wedding. And it wasn't even that the son or others didn't know when the wedding would be, it was that the father's role was to set the time. In the same way as it is the role of God the Father to set the time of Jesus second coming. All this to say, if we understand the Jewish wedding culture and this "saying" at the time, Jesus actually meant it was the Father's role to set the time of the second coming, not that Jesus didn't actually know the time.

Another perspective (: When God is said not to know something, either it is said in reference to what he does not approve, that is, of something he does not acknowledge in discipline or in doctrines, as when it is said, ‘I do not know you,’ or in reference to that which it is useless to know and from which he draws an advantage for those who do not know. Furthermore, the Greek verb used eidó may mean "to tell" or "to declare" For example... Mark 13:32 Which would make this consistent with Jewish tradition for marriage where ONLY THE FATHER tells/declares the wedding date. Jesus will return to take the bride (Church). Every time iv seen a video of a Muslim trying to discredit Christianity it is always done with verses they they know nothing about or bothered to study. He wouldn't know the answer, but I would because we are two separate agents with two separate experiences and roles despite being one in being and being exactly the same entity. This video is a great response but this is actually much deeper than you even went into here. Jesus constantly refers to and uses a Jewish wedding image for salvation and spiritual marriage and in a Jewish wedding, after the bride accepts the marriage, the groom builds a house for her and it is when the Father says the preparation is over that the groom takes his bride, like a thief in the night. Only the Father knows the hour of the wedding, and every Jew would have known this phrase and concept. This is much deeper and more complex than this basic summary so I recommend Brant Pitre, as I do with any other Gospel exegesis tbh. If we read the Gospels through the Old Testament, this is blatantly clear, just like a ton of other things we would otherwise miss if we only read the New Testament by itself. This is also why objections like this come up from Muslims, who are unfamiliar and don't understand what Jesus is actually saying. It's like trying to understand an inside joke without knowing any of the context.

while I do agree with this explanation in regards to his human nature limiting his knowledge I still think it's somewhat inadequate, because doesn't Jesus say that neither Him, the Spirit, nor the angels in heaven know when the hour is coming but only the Father alone? Now this in no way discredits Jesus' claims to divinity, unless if the Muslim just isolates this passage alone to try and prove his point. But I do think that this adds a layer of mystery about the nature of the Trinity.

What makes me question this response is it makes a clear exception that only the father knows the hour. Unless the spirit is the father now you have to explain why the spirit isnt all knowledgeable as well

According to the Koran, Jesus will judge the world. Only God can judge the world. So, Jesus is God. They should become Christians to be saved from Judgment.

Oh my God... I can't with your "logic"... The verse itself is crystal clear in attributing things to God and excluding Jesus from the same attribute yet most Christians, I'm saying most because there are Christians who don't believe in the Trinity (JHW, Unitarians etc), believe Jesus to be God. Your analogy is SEVERELY flawed and in fact proves the opposite: When you veiled your eyes, were you able to see at the same time? No? Jesus is veiled but God sees at the same time! The 3 persons are NOT one!! You have a can of worms opened on a house of cards (1+1+1= basic math fail) so no beating around the bush could solve it.

This answer will only satisfy those Christians dying of intellectual thirst and desperate for drop of reassurance. You still have the giant gaping hole of the holy spirit not knowing either. Only the father means only the father, and since the Athenasian creed stipulates that the father is not the holy spirit and the holy spirit is not the father, this cannot be explained via incarnation doctrine as it has nothing to do with the holy spirit. Jesus is God, but he is not the Father nor the Holy Spirit. They are 3 united as 1. Jesus claimed "the Father is greater than I". I have no idea why christians have such a hard time with this. Study the Hebrew in the OT and it is clear. Holy! Holy! Holy! There are 3 Gods as declared, Elohim, we are God. Echad means one but does not not mean single or singularity. So it is often used throughout Hebrew as a reference to a group. One team, one family, many together as one. Genesis 2:24 - …and they shall become one (echad) flesh Genesis 11:6 - …the people are one (echad) and they shall have one (echad) language In Deuteronomy 6:4 the word for God (Eleinu) ends with a plural suffix. “Hear O Israel: The Lord our God (Eleinu - plural) the Lord is one (Echad - united)!” In the following verses Elohim was translated as God singular in the King James Version even though it was accompanied by plural verbs and other plural grammatical terms in Hebrew. Genesis 3:5 Elohim (Hebrew: אֱלֹהִים, romanized: ʾĔlōhīm: [(ʔ)eloˈ(h)im]), the plural of אֱלוֹהַּ⁠‎ (ʾĔlōah), is a Hebrew word meaning "gods". Genesis 20:13 "And when Gods (Elohim) caused me to wander. Here is a reference to YHWY acting in the plural. All 3 are acting together and causing him to wander. "They caused me to wander." I watched a video on what it's referring to in that chapter. It's actually referring to a custom wedding where the father of the husband would tell him when to get his wife. It does not mean that God never knew but he was trying to explain it to people of that time because they would understand it

I think even an atheist understands that nothing is capable of handicapping godly power and you'd understand that too if you only gave it a bit of thought. So just because you mask the act by using words such as 'humbled' it doesn't make the statement anyless fallacious. Second of all the verse states very precisely that the SON OF GOD doesnt know the hour and assuming even with all his power jesus ultimately is the son of god and nothing more, you aren't really left with a chance of saving the situation as jesus didnt become the son of god (according to you) after he veiled his knowledge or became human, rather he was always the son of god. So while the scripture says the son of god doesn't know, for you to add words such as 'at that moment' is completely wrong. Because the son of god DOESN'T know the hour and not that the son of god DIDN'T know the hour. I dunno about you but pretty sure a 7 year old can spot the difference.

The mere fact that Christ *died* demonstrates that He can put limitations on Himself. I love these kind of questions because they really show the limitations of our brains to understand God's power. Often times, people get tripped up with God not being able to weave events because of "time". God invented time and can utilize it, bend it, break it however He sees fit! Well, let’s simplify further. Your own brain doesn’t know what some parts of itself are doing to keep you alive and we are made in God’s image. For example, control your own heartbeat right now. You can’t. Or, command yourself to sweat right now. You can’t control these things. This is like God the father; he’s doing magnificent, amazing things behind the scenes that keep everything together; things that would require a ton of conscious effort and planning if the tasks weren’t subdivided. His timing is perfect just like your heartbeat. Our conscious brains (Jesus, the presence of God) are beholden to these parts of the body and its a good thing that these things are separate and I don’t have to think about them. In the same way, God can separate himself into segments and accomplish tasks. With Jesus not knowing the hour of his return it helps him and us all focus on what’s important; the message and salvation of Jesus. If we knew the hour and Jesus told us, mankind would just sin all they wanted and then go “oh ok now I gotta clean up, Jesus is coming back next week”. By Jesus not being allowed to know, he is saving us as well from an even darker world. It also lends itself to the human side of him; he had a body that could die and human mental limitations. Jesus didn’t come to earth and cure cancer or give us trigonometry or technology or ipads. He came to earth to cure us, not enable us. If my toe had to worry about remembering to blink or make my liver filter my blood, I would be dead.

For someone who's tag name is logic, you sure do make some fallacies. "When he found himself to be human"? So what's he human or God. It can't be both. Mind you God can't put a limit to himself. I wish more Christians were quick to answer these so called « gotcha/debunk » moment with a simple knowledge of the Word like you 😅 I mean even as a child growing in church I understood that Jesus had to limit his godly self to be « like us » during his time on earth. Otherwise how could he teach us how to pray , behave in a God-respecting way if he hasn’t walked in our shoes, litteraly ? That’s why Jesus in all his teachings was never using the power of God by himself, he was always praying and asking the Father for a miracle or healing because he wanted to show the disciples (and in extension us future generations) that in the form that he was he was no different than any human yet was able to perform miracles and such just by obeying God and asking Him. He was showing us that everything he did as Jesus Son of Man can be done by us too becasue he did all those things as a human. If he had done all of it as God the Son then people would question wether or not we can act like he did. Mr. B, I would consider a different explanation. Look into Jewish marital customs. When a man betrothed a woman, he would go to his father's home to prepare a place for her. In the meantime, the bride undergoes a lengthy ritual of cleansing and preparation. It was only when the father approved that the son would go and retrieve his bride for the wedding ceremony. So, Jesus is still God, but he is not the Father. It is not his role to determine the time he will go and bring his Bride, the Church, to marry himself. That is why he does not "know." It's a matter of decision-making responsibility, not omniscience.

Bro what is hard to understand in God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit. If you ask the father in my name (Jesus). No one comes to God only trough me. You need to accept Jesus as God, and when you become born again you get the God Holy Spirit. It's a Trinity for a reason. Yes, because of the Holy Spirit, but all saints are partakers of the divine nature once we are filled with the Holy Spirit. It's funny how people take Philippians 2:6-9 out of context. So he was a man that God used as his representative to be made like us that could die, be tempted, and overcome the devil by the power of the Holy Spirit. He is the Messiah (Christ) or lamb that took away the sins of the world. He obeyed God to the point of death, so God exalted him.

The entire purpose of Jesus' incarnation was to live as a man, fully tempted in all things as we are, yet without sin. To retain his divine attributes of omniscience, omnipotence and invulnerability would have made his sinlessness trivial. He had to feel pain and sorrow and grief. He had to be tempted and hungry and tired and afraid. There had to be limits to his knowledge to plague him with doubt and anxiety. Otherwise, his sacrifice would have been made imperfect and impure and without effect.

The angels, nor The Son, nor God know, because God gave humanity sovereignty over the Earth, doesn’t anyone see that this world will only end if humanity allows it to?
