Gday everyone. It looks like it is easier to remove the snorkel by taking off the airbox door and pulling it out from the inside. I'll do a video trying that in the future. Thanks for watching and don't forget to subscribe!
Did this mod along with a tusk racing air filter, big big sound difference under load and definitely noticeable performance gains as it now has the balls to pull harder and harder until about 6,500-6,800 as it can actually move the air it needs to definitely seems to pull faster and harder not by a crazy amount but you definitely feel it I think a pipe and possibly a tune would really finish waking it up will try to remember to update this comment when I add my new pipe
Thank you brother, great video! I was unsure of exactly what the snorkel was, you are the only one that made it super easy and on my klr2007, it took 2 seconds. LOL. Much appreciated. Had to find it to complete my KLX Needle and jet mods. Cheers Vato!
Bahaha....sweatin' more than MJ at a Wiggles concert 😄 Sweet mod video, bud 👌...well paced, good step-by-step, easy to follow + comments in post-production also helpful. Duke looks a little jaded in the background 😁
Hey buddy. Just got the snorkel out. Got halfway through your video and got to thinking maybe it would be easier to push it down through the airbox and pull it out through the side and it was definitely easier. Thanks for the idea though. The size comparison between the two is unreal.
@@onthebackwheel I hear ya buddy. Honestly, I'm not sure. Logic dictates that it would perform better with more air. But I dont want the "placebo" effect to take control of my brain, thinkin because it's louder, that its better. I've only got a few hundred miles on it so far, so I'm reluctant to jump on it until it's properly broke in. I definitely think there would be a noticable power gain with a more open exhaust. Which is gonna happen. For sure.
Some have said they pushed it into the airbox and took the filter off and pulled it out through the air filter service door. I haven’t done it yet, my bike only has 200 miles on it.
Nice to see you using the rage to protect the paint, Just picked up a KLX400r for this season to see if it fit. Still have a thing for the KLR in the future when I can't do the rougher tracts anymore and do longer rides around Oz. Time and opportunity will tell. 👍
I have a 2023 Adventure, and it's a lot tighter on both sides of the frame tube. I ended up deciding to destroy the snorkel with a utility knife after heating up the snorkel with a heat gun. Razor, fine scissors, two vice grips, and then the bottom of the snorkel fell down into the airbox. Lovely. I'm not the brightest bulb and instead of taking off the airbox cover to retrieve the remainder I used long tweezers to bring it back up, heated it again with the heat gun, caught the air filter on fire ( a little bit ) and eventually yanked it out from the top outside the frame. Duh me. This is not a recommended method, a new snorkel is only a few bucks but how to put it back in if necessary? ;-) Don't use this method. If you get stuck, walk away and have a beer. The beer lubricates the snorkel so it comes out much easier albeit in chunks.
the sputtering initially must have been the ecu hadn’t adjusted for the change yet. Apparently the ecu is smart enough to adjust for the increase of airflow that a snorkel removal and slip on exhaust will give you. Which kind of makes sense if it can compensate for altitude between sea level and 10,000 ft above.
Thank you for doing this video but I got mine out after 2 beers and 5 mins. For those that want to know I used a pair of needle nose to get it unseated then a good pair of vice grips to get a good grab on the edge on it then twisted as I pulled up and it came right out only thing I removed was the seat and moved the sensors off to the side.
I'm going to do a dedicated video for that ASAP, but if you watch my off and on road reviews I talk about it. If you watch this ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-8Xcwe16F1lk.html I've set it where I start talking about the fueling on the road (with the snorkel out)
Hello mate I have watched your videos on the klr Always entertaining. You really give thst klr some stick. I have a couple of questions in regards to the Klr and the mods you have done so far. Does removing the snorkel have any negative effects Did the after mkt muffler give you any extra power And lastly do you have any information on remapping the ecu. I have looked at so many bikes but I keep on coming back to the klr. Oh yeah are you happy with the performance of the klr on the highway Sorry for the barrage of questions Thanks mate
Hey mate all good. I haven't dyno'd the bike, but I feel it has a bit more poke now. The snorkel should not have any negative effects. The fueling is changed very slightly, from what I know the ECU compensates for the snorkel and pipe changes. In terms of ecu mapping, there is a power commander for it and talk of an ecu flash. Highway performance is solid, not great. Tops for 100-110 kph, much over you feel like you need another gear.
Once again thanks so much Curtis I absolutely love watching you put the klr through it paces. I watched on today where you went for a swim and got completely bogged in the mud. The klr is much more capable than it looks on a stat sheet. That is why it's taken me so long to make up my mind about the klr. It does not make any sense on paper I.e heavy, under powered and you know the rest For value and its capabilities it's a no brainier. I'm living vicariously through your videos as I'm still waiting for ankle to heal, hence all the questions Any way if your ever on the Central Coast N.S.W pop in for a coffee. Thanks again mate
@@onthebackwheel ol man here back on the road after hanging up the boots since 89. My mate has the same bike with the Yoshi pipe and I find it to be a bit loud 🤣 Also why not go for a black pipe on a black bike 🤔
@@onthebackwheel I heard Barrett do one though I could go Staintune or the Leo Vinci sounds bloody awesome 🤔 Just found you on Facebook as well so look out.
Wouldn’t increasing air flow change the FI? Will be waiting too see how you like it. Opening up the air box on my previous bikes required re jetting the carb.
Took it for a ride and it seems to be a tiny more responsive. Sound is much improved and I can actually hear it on the road now. Yep it changes the fuelling slighly for sure. Since it's only a small snorkel, the stock EFI seems to adjust enough. If I change the exhaust and do any more mods, it would definitely need a tune
@@onthebackwheel I have the exact same bike with 260mi on the break in. Would you recommend I do this? It does seem to add a nice throaty sound to the induction. Any downside to this??
@@Turn_on_the_shop only downside is possible fuelling problems. I've ridden approx 300kms with it out and so far have only seen an improvement. With an exhaust I believe it will need a tune
How do we know removing this would even increase air flow to the engine? I'd suspect removing this simple reduces torque through some RPM range, then when it comes back in higher RPMs, people think it 'made power'.
8-07-22 Just removed my snorkel and a few %#!* words go a long way. Could not tell any difference in sound and yet to ride it. NOTE.. If the head of the seat bolts strip out because like mine was on to tight from the factory just use vice grips and clamp on the whole metal washer. It only took half turn to free the nut. Why such a cheap nut Kawa...
the snorkel is IN the airbox it does not increase fording depth or water intake. the purpose is to decrease turbulent air but the design and material choice meant it made the hole it sits in smaller decreasing overall flow instead. Great idea but wrong materials
Generally nothing to do with water. Directs air into the airbox and restricts noise. Depending on the design it can help with getting more air in. Some designs it helps with air turbulence and other fancy things
It would lean it out a tiny bit, it is bringing in a small amount more air. I want to get an exhaust and then have it tuned, but noone is doing anything yet
Hola Amigo! Gracias!
So you do or do not have a aftermarket exhaust ?? I put a delkevic on my 2023 with a baffle and the motor runs much better but I get some minimal popping when letting off the throttle to upshift only in second gear so I'm wondering if I pull the snorkel on my bike now will it be too lean ??
I put an FMF on. Felt it had slightly more power with it. Ideally you would get a fuel controller but the ECU should compensate so it isn't dangerous for the engine
I'm not going to change mine, it's a new bike with 2 years of unlimited warranty. KLR owners are a pedantic bunch, but if I keep the bike long term I might consider changing it
@@onthebackwheel yeah, i got a free extended 3 year warranty. im going to ride the hell out of it and if it blows then i get a free motor but after the warranty im definetly replacing it
How in the hell is taking that little piece of rubber out going to make any difference at all? I'm thinking it's more like the placebo effect than any difference performance.
It makes a difference if you go through water crossings. If you get too deep and water enters the snorkel it will collapse and kill the engine before water can enter the combustion chamber. The airflow restriction on the KLR is the carb. No matter how much you open up the airbox the carb is still going to flow the same amount. Removing the snorkel simply reduces the capabilities of the KLR. It's a stupid mod for stupid people. If you want your KLR to be fast then trade it in for something else.
By all accounts, very minimal due to its location, plus it's only a very small size increase. If I was doing lots of desert, I would probably put a dish cloth over the filter too just in case
I would like to put a cheap and simple camera system on my 2022 KLR650 (front and back) because here in Texas we have lots of road rage and it really pays off to get some video if you get attacked by one of these crazy people out here. Any chance that you might be making the modification to your KLR650? This is a real need for me as I was recently a victim of one of these road rage people. Not only was I taken out, but I was run over once on the ground and everybody involved lied to the police who in turn believed them as the police here seem to dislike motorcycles. Help.
I'm not going to, but it would be very easy to do. You could use the 12v socket to run a dash cam and there are lots of mounting points on the beast. Rear camera? That could get tricky and would need some mods to make it work
I use a rear facing GoPro for riding. Really easy to install and you could turn it on if something is happening. Then you've got your dash cam and a gopro to cover all bases if that makes sense
On a KLR if it's incredibly difficult to get to, there's no reason to take it off. For the most part someone who's not overly mechanically inclined like myself can work on almost anything on this bike.
If you remove it don't drive through deep water because the snorkel is what prevents water from getting into your engine. If you go through water high enough to reach the snorkel and gets sucked in the snorkel will collapse thus killing the engine before water gets sucked into the combustion chamber. If you want to go fast don't buy a KLR. If you want to go forever then buy a KLR unless someone has removed the snorkel.
I spoke with the tech at the kawi dealer near me and he said removing the snorkel gets you nothing but alittle intake sound and no performance gain . His recommendations were, put a decent slip on pipe on it , run OEM air filters and if your dreaming it's a high output race bike then spend your money on a tuner or a flash and maybe gain 3 hp?? Spend your money on other things like a seat or heated grips !
You went in from the wrong side especially if you're going to upgrade air filter and exhaust. With the air filter after you put it off with a flat head screwdriver, you can literally reach in and grab it from the right side.
I call bullshit. Other than air noise at the intake you will likely lose power. These things are designed and tuned by pretty smart engineers. Without other modifications and tuning after market air intakes and free modes have been proven time and time again to actually lose power. Do the research before hacking your fine tuned Swiss clock. Besides that if you must remove the boot do it through the inside of the box after pulling the filter. Not like a half witted fool squeezing it between the box and frame or taking other things apart. It comes out easy from inside the box. One really needs to think about following the advise of someone struggling so hard with something so simple. “Tada” Sorry pal but any improvement is simply placebo effect, in other words your imagination.
My understanding is that Aussie Gen 2 KLR,s are detuned with airbox snorkel, Carb needle and jetting to comply with LAM,s requirements and that HP and Torque are significantly reduced compared to US KLR,s. There is well documented ways to address this in online forums etc. It is claimed that KLR RWHP can be very significantly increased if done correctly, along with a better breathing exhaust. I suspect Gen 3,s may be similar but the EFI may be an added issue also to consider. As to doohicky- my Gen 2 has done 35,000 km without that mod. 6000km service interval adjustment of doohicky was recommended by Kawasaki dealer and has been attended frequently by myself. Touch wood this advice doesn,t prove me wrong!!!! Cool vid and presentation as always- air filter box removal has been documented in past, as best way to remove snorkel.
Any issues since removing the snorkel. I had my KLR for around the same time as you have and have been considering this mod since watching this video. My biggest concerns are voiding any manufacturer warranty and unknown issues with this being a new model.
It's a safety device. It's a collapsible part of the intake system. If you go through deep water and submerge the air box the engine vacuum will collapse the air duct and kill the motor before it sucks water and hydro locks the engine. This guy is going to spend the next two years trying to get it back in. If you want to increase airflow just take the door off and leave it off.
Stupidest mod I've come across for the gen 3. If you want a bigger hole in your air box for some reason (?), why knock yourself out trying to get the snorkel out? Why not just leave the access door off the box?? Just saying.
You could leave it off, but that would be a big difference to the AF, plus all the dust. Main reason is it gives a little bit of performance, the pipe added some more again too. I've mentioned it a few times, but you can remove it easily by going through the other side, my bad!
