The Madeira Toboggan Ride, also known as the "Carros de Cesto," is a unique and exhilarating attraction that can be found on the picturesque island of Madeira. This thrilling experience offers visitors a one-of-a-kind journey down the steep and winding streets of Funchal, the capital of Madeira, in a traditional wicker toboggan sled, providing an unforgettable mix of adrenaline, history, and stunning natural beauty.
The origin of this unusual mode of transportation dates back to the early 19th century when it was initially used as a convenient means of transportation for the inhabitants of the Monte neighbourhood. The toboggans were a response to the hilly terrain, and the locals ingeniously repurposed their straw baskets into sleds with wooden runners. Over time, they transformed into a popular tourist attraction, and today, they are an iconic symbol of Madeira.
The ride typically begins at the top of a steep hill in Monte, a charming suburb overlooking Funchal. Passengers are seated in a wicker sled, which is manoeuvered by two experienced "carreiros" or toboggan drivers dressed in traditional white uniforms and straw hats. The carreiros use their rubber-soled boots to guide and control the speed of the sled as it descends the narrow, winding streets.
The ride itself is a blend of exhilaration and relaxation. As you glide through the cobbled streets, you'll enjoy panoramic views of lush gardens, traditional Madeiran houses, and the deep blue Atlantic Ocean in the distance. The scent of blooming flowers and the gentle breeze add to the sensory experience of this unique adventure. It's not unusual for visitors to let out joyful screams and laughter as they make their way down the hill.
The toboggan ride covers a distance of approximately 2 kilometres. The carreiros are skilled at ensuring a safe and enjoyable descent, even on the steeper sections of the journey.
Upon reaching the end of the ride, which is situated near the Livramento Market in Funchal, visitors are welcomed by friendly locals and the opportunity to explore the vibrant markets, restaurants, and shops of the city.
While the Madeira Toboggan Ride is undeniably a thrilling experience, it is also a living piece of Madeiran history, representing the island's resourceful spirit and connection to its past. For travelers seeking a unique and unforgettable way to explore Madeira, this iconic attraction offers a blend of history, tradition, and adventure that is hard to find anywhere else in the world. The Madeira Toboggan Ride is a must-try adventure that will leave you with lasting memories of this beautiful island.

Hi Anna, Yes, if you ever visit Madeira I recommend both of those things. This was actually filmed in July 2022 so there were a few people still wearing masks. Lovely place for a holiday. Hope you are fully recovered. Best wishes, Rob
