When you cling onto someone convulsing and struggling for their very life, and you softly repeat those words.... I genuinely don't even have the words to describe the emotion. In that moment you literally join souls. It's a promise on all that's holy, before all the gods that ever were, that no force on earth will drag you away from them. 14 years as a supervisor in disability services I've had to do this several times for my guys. I don't think the fear leaves them, but the courage those words give helps them fight. "I've got you, look at me, c'mon mate it's ok I've got you" The most powerful sentence I've ever spoken, and the most painful. You are not promising to save them, you can't make that promise. you are taking an oath that you will not abandon them no matter what. I burned out and resigned in 2011. To this day I can still see the looks in their eyes. The fear, desperation and begging.....and to see that look change as you say those magic words. And YOUR fear skyrockets as you pray you're telling them the truth when you reassure them they'll make it.

For those wondering how this happened; Basically picture a large pine tree or any coniferous tree, the way their branches angle most of the snow down and away from it slightly. This creates a kind of pocket of air immediately next to the trunk of the tree and when you have like 7 feet of snow accumulation in the high altitude tree lines there is a deep cavity directly beside the tree trunk. If you are unlucky enough like this snowboarder to lose your balance and fall back into a tree or forward into one you can literally fall right down to the bottom of these holes (called tree-wells) and then the surrounding snow will just fall in on top of you and suffocate you the harder you struggle. In some places they kill more people every year than avalanches, cliffs or anything else. This guy was 100% going to die.

Can't you feel your way to the tree trunk and use it to support yourself up? Also how was this guy being rescued breathing under that pile of snow? How would he suffocate if not rescued then? Does air seep in slowly but not fast enough to sustain your oxygen requirement? The guy being rescued in the video seemed fine and wasn't gasping for air.

@Doomadin
@Doomadin Год назад
@@Grejegando Snow is too compact (and heavy) too let you move when you're buried that deep and upside down. As for suffocating, maybe air got to him slowly as you said or a pocket of air was created allowing him some room to breath but eventually he'd run out of oxygen. Who knows, maybe he could've lasted several more minutes or hour, but eventually if nobody gets him out of there, things other than suffocating will get him as well

If Search and Rescue were out looking for that guy, the chance of them finding him would be slim and none. This skier not only realizes something is wrong when he see the snowboard, but he back-tracks and does everything he can to help save a strangers life. I don't know if he was moving the snowboard to get an idea of which direction the guys head was so he could start digging him out, but he really is a hero...both of their lives are forever changed. Oh, and what happened to that guys friend -- he just kept going. He's in the lodge drinking a hot-tottie while his buddy is saving a life. As for the snowboarder -- it's hard to imagine what was going through his mind...for all he knew, he was out there alone and going to die under all that snow. Being buried alive is one of my biggest fears. It's nice to know there are still people out there that care about others.

Almost died twice alone on my board: once getting stuck up a tree I tried to jump, went between my legs, couldnt unbuckle, end of day out of bounds, alone, thought I was going to be found frozen and upside down. Second time was head first in a tree well. Some stranger found me both times. Suffocating in a tree though has stuck with me because it was far far scarier. Most hopeless feeling you can imagine because there is a point when you know you're dead unless there's a miracle like this skier finding you.

The dangers of trees.. and then there are the wind bowls.. Years ago, skiing without out a buddy, got caught in a tree wind snow-bowl sort of like this snow-boarder.. could only get out by twisting out of my bindings and it took 15 minutes to get out after that. had my bindings been tighter I would have froze to death as it was closing time when I got caught and with blowing snow there are no tracks after a while and the snow -bowl even covers up Infra-red heat signature. Buddies save lives.

That’s horrifying. I remember being a kid & my brother and I would make tunnels in the snow when it would get a few feet deep. Once when I was crawling through the snow collapsed and buried me quickly. I know I was just a kid & it must of only been 3 or 4 feet deep but snow is incredibly heavy. The more I moved the more compact it became. I probably would have been able to get out on my own if we didn’t pack the “ceiling” and walls of the tunnel so tightly with snow. Luckily my brother was there and got my dad, remember my dads fist hitting me in the gut (lol was probably punching through to try and get to me quickly) He pulled me out by grabbing my jacket’s hood and was one of the rare times I saw him have tears in his eyes. Hugged me so tight and sprinted inside. - that whole incident is probably why I’m so claustrophobic now… and MAN did we get yelled at after everyone calmed down. We were already told before to not make tunnels because it’s so dangerous, but being dumb kids we never really understood why until that day. Can’t imagine being alone and having this happen. The sheer horror alone that man must of felt gives me the chills. Thank God for that man. Stay safe out there everyone, especially you guys who ski/snowboard/go to snowy places. God bless ♡

I think they have a key strategy of following the others line. Not only does the follower identify that the leader has stopped since their tracks in the snow stopped. The other thing is, the follower will also avoid this kind of thing cause they'll stay away from other possible spots of danger

When I was a kid I fell into one in Tahoe that was maybe 6-7 feet deep. I was able to get out in about an hour or so, because it didn’t collapse in on me when I fell in and was able to make a really long, slow incline path to get out. I was also under 100 lbs so that may have helped. The scariest part. The scariest. Was that the snow absorbs almost all of your voice as you scream for help. Someone skiing by would probably not even hear you.

I kinda blacked out and dont ever tell the story cause its not believable especially with my story telling skills but its so scary being trapped like that and almost impossible to describe...
