I saw a lot with the customer helping. With some, they don't fully get it until 4:00 PM. Others are like these guys! A joy to work with.

Yup! I've worked with crews that sat around waiting for me to say something and whom never got the idea that keeping me making sawdust was less expensive than sitting on their rears but I billed by the hours so.... ;)

Thanks Bud! and running solo is hard work! Or slower work. But if you run solo you can decide how hard to work I guess :D I do at our property and then I have more time to think about what I'm doing and seem to get a lot less done lol

I worked in a stud mill in Montana back in 1970. My first mill job. Because I was young the made me a deck hand on the barker. I didn’t know anything but with a day or two of instruction I was able to deal with what ever was coming at me. I look back fondly at those days at a $1.96 hr now.

Cool! I worked in a pulp mill up in BC back in the early 90's (I'm a little younger and was only 5 in 1970) and while I made more per hour it might not have bought more ;) I too look back on those days fondly! Love sawmills and having my own is awesome! Cheers!

I started running a Wood Mizer LT27 2003, and upgraded to a LT40HD in 2010 with an Operator Seat. That seat made all the difference in comfortable operation by eliminating the walking back and forth as well as never bumping into the Trailer Tire! I also found having the ground crew pull the boards off the tail end of the mill, two or even three at a time, makes things even faster and it's easier to keep track of where people are. If they start to move the boards when the Saw Head is all the way forward and the operator had just initiated the downward movement for the next cut, there is no chance of binding anything and the next cut can be started as soon as the Saw Head is stable.

Was at a customer one time. There were 4 guys with him for helping. I was setting the mill then each guy of the crew opened up a beer. I stop the engine and then said: Listen, I'm not here for a party but if you want a party at 75$ an hour I'm good with that. They all put their beer away and since it was their first time with a sawmill, I gave them a lesson on how to work around the mill for fast and safe operations.
@TheOldJarhead

Awesome! Love it! It doesn't take much to get seriously injured around a sawmill and working around one while drinking would be a dangerous 'party'! lol Good job!

How often are nails in logs? Would it be worth running a metal detector across them before starting?
@TheOldJarhead
@TheOldJarhead 11 месяцев назад
Sometimes there are not any and then the day comes there they are! I've mill 39 logs and thought "yes! No metal" then Zing! But even a metal detector won't always find them

If your a mason and you have good hoddy look out. If your a pipe fitter and you have a good apprentice it awesome. If your a doctor you need a good nurse. Ever you work alone you learn to be efficient with your movements. Some work in fits and starts but the best are smooth and steady never wasting a movement. To work hard does not take away from you but full fills you. Mom said make yourself handy! Someone some where passed this to them!
