If your oil level is always at the level at 12:10, you have an over-full situation. If you have too much oil in your engine, the engine will try to flush the extra out, causing smoking among many other bad things. Due to the inaccuracy of the oil level gauge, you really want to keep the level at 1 bar BELOW full. That way you know you're not low or over full. As you stated, not all of the 8 liters comes out, so you really only need to refill with 7.5q. What do you do if you've over filled? Remove the oil filter canister and dump the oil. That will take you down a half bar. If you're a full bar too full, you may have to replace the filter canister, start the engine, and remove the oil in the canister again.

The pic was from google, but being at the top mark wouldnt make it smoke, mine is usually at the 1/2 way mark
@terrylessmann2274
@terrylessmann2274 3 года назад
@@NathansPorscheWorkshop The inaccuracy of the gauge will show "full" if the oil is over 50% above the 3/4 mark all the way up to 49% OVER the full mark. That's why you want to measure off of the 3/4 mark - you know you're never over full.

@Grekstor
@Grekstor Год назад
You should also remember that if the AOS membrane fails badly, you still end up with a pretty contaminated intake after you change the AOS. Need to use the car for quite a bit before the residual oil burns out and the smoke symptom finally disappears. Also, it is a great idea to change the air filter, because it may clog up with oil vapours after a bad AOS failure (even if it is still low mileage and looks relatively clean from dust - it may be restricting your airflow).
@sibbese3740
@sibbese3740 2 года назад
Maybe you already figured the smoke at start issue out but I would say its very likely depending on a bad AOS causing oil to go to the intake. I dont know how easy it is to check intake in the caymans but on the std 911 its super easy to check if the intake is moistures with oil. Replacing AOS is another story...

Awesome video. May Cayman has smoked on cold start in winter only since I got it, and it's not an issue. I have no slapping. I don't loose oil at all. Nothing. Car runs great. My only issue is a tank leak when full. Not sure why these "performance" cars have terrible tanks lol. It's not a cheap thing to fix.

Hmmmm... That is quite a bit of smoke and it keeps smoking when you drove, as soon as you engaged the gear to drive forward another plume. I'd check with that scope, you may have some issues. Just an observation from my local scene here: old gen 987 caymans now that they are aging quite a bit, sometimes smoke a tiny bit but not nearly that much it's pretty unusual to have clouds of smoke behind you although as 987s go they would be the car to have scoring issues.

I also have an 08 cayman that does the same thing. I also put a new AOS on mine and still smokes. Mine only smokes though when like backing it out when cold , washing it and pulling back in garage never warmed up. Next morning it smokes on startup just for a couple seconds. Will not smoke at all on long drives when start next morning cold. Where did you get the info that maybe you need to use 10W 40 instead of 0w40 which is all I have ever run in it? Agreed, always replace the entire housing and aluminum drain plug with every oil change. For 35 bucks you get a new housing with an actual Porsche filter already installed. I'd assume the scoring would be on the bottom side of the cylinder wall since the piston tends to drag on it. You don't put any oil in the canister? Are you sure it calls for 8 quarts or is it 8 litres which which is 8 and a half quarts. My mercs and BMW called for 8 litres. They are European cares and they are all metric. I also use LiqiMoly exclusively. Mobile1 is not actually synthetic.

I would say it's bore scoring and that looking at another series of videos from someone who just had their bore scored Cayman rebuild and stopped smoking altogether even on cold starts and now doesn't use any oil at all, that blue smoke coming from any Porsche isn't "normal" and should be investigated. Don't believe the "oh, every Porsche smokes" nonsense if looking at buying one of these.
@Baerchenization
@Baerchenization 2 года назад
I find it a bit worrying that your explanation is that Porsche don't know what viscosity oil belongs in there after building this engine in one shape or another for decades and of course having done extensive R+D and testing. Instead, you should fix your leaky seals. Btw, it always irks me a bit when a professional says "weight". W stands for winter, these are temperate ranges, not weight, Jesus Christ :)
