On that engine bore scorring on the passenger side cylinders would first appear on the roof of the cylinders, that's the high wear side of those cylinders. There's no coating on the cylinders, the coating is on the piston skirts. You can get the engine rebuilt with six steel sleaves and JE pistons for around $15k-17k and you'll have a sweet engine.

I know what you need to know , stay away from all of them except from the turbo or gt3 the rest definitely crap themselves over time I’ve had 5 of them , and the all ended up needing an engine rebuilt, and I change the oil every 5000 miles using Mobil one oil , it’s sad porsche can’t make a reliable engine like there old air cooled engine

130K miles and counting 997.1 manual. No IMS. Original engine still and clutch . Yes now there is slight bore scoring. To be expected. A lot boils down to the care and regular check ups and luck. Can’t discount luck. And when the time comes will do a rebuild. Common sense goes a long way. Do your due diligence.

I would be curious to get your thoughts on Sumebore, the newer lining Porsche (and others) are using. Appears to be very durable. It might not be a cost effective option for repair though (apparently very expensive to apply and hone).

2004 996 handles so much better and is more real than any cayman or boxster. Also no problems spend 3k for ims bearing and your done. All the electronics control the handling on newer ones so boring. If you want boring get a newer porsche and let the electronics take over. It is almost like getting a tesla

"90%"????? LMAO!!! Research says that 5-10% of 997.1 engines are experiencing bore scoring.

Just wow......these cars "must be stored".....I've never heard such a load of crap. HUNDREDS of articles, and videos, and forums by DRIVERS that confirm the Porsche 997 is a GREAT daily driver. Myself included. Scare tactics and bull s@#!...

So to summarize the video. This guy thinks you should not buy a Porsche and if you do still want one, you are a moron. It’s going to break and you will buy a new engine no matter what. (Great success high five ) sooo is there any optimistic message? There goes the Porsche market! Don’t buy a used one. It will break. Can’t buy a new one unless you are a RU-vidr, or “play the game” Just flat out depressing. Thank you.

If relatively attainable Porsche reliability is what you’re after, you should consider the naturally aspirated (no turbo issues) 991.1 C2 & C2S. Not saying it’s not without any faults, but bang for buck… I think it’s the best. No IMS, no rampant bore scoring issues and you can pick up a lower mileage version for under $80K.

A car is meant to be used, it is not an investment object unless you are willing to just keep it in a garage and sell it later... When I buy a car I buy it to drive it, even if it means it will wear out.

I have a tr3 own it for many years. Guess what, engine is gone, total new shocks bushings etc. And it will set you back 20k easily. Every old car is expensive. And Porsches even more. You know that of you buy one. Each expensive car, will cost the same in running as it cost in buying after 20 years. Not something to be afraid of

Aftermarket passenger side SPC UCA ball joint broke off going 75+mph on freeway, returning from a road trip this past 4th of July weekend. It's a lifted 07 Tacoma and the damages were ball joint(of course), bent sway bar link, bit of a leak from outer CV axle boot, and damage to almost new AT tire(but I do have a hassle free replacement warrant from America's Tire, aka Discount Tire). Btw, I was about 320miles from home, so jacked it up, reattached the joint then drove home carefully.

So the title reads 1300 to rebuild, in the video he says 2000 alone just to have it resleeved 🤔 why lie about cost in the title, click bait.

The 986s is a great car. I've owned a 2000 model for 4 years now and it's totally reliable and fast. It has lowered suspension; aftermarket alloys and sports exhaust system. We live near Monaco where there are hoards of 911s and the car still gets loads of admiring looks. There's a lot of snobbery in the Porsche world; if you don't own a 911 it's not a Porsche! 🤦‍♂️

When I was a kid, I used to wander up to Porsches and stare in admiration. Never did it cross my mind, even at 12 years old, to put my hands on them. They were far less common 25 years ago than they are now, and to me they were unicorns. An inspiration to become successful and have my own one day. Never something to mess with.

Is the colour amber or why it looked orange in video? Secondly I have looked lots of similiar videos where parts got changed but rearly in any videos people do not clean the backplates and just leave that dirt there. I think it is curious.

It is running WAY to rich if it can run 100% E85 (like 20 to 30% higher fuel consumption then normal)... But I have heard other run 100% E85 on stock Porsche that had nothing done on it. I did run a 1991 model MB 190E 2L for 2 years on E40 and it would not pass emmissions tests without it. But I did adjust the air fuel sensor (mechanically) to make it run a little rich, but it was already running rich before that. I tried 100% E85 and it was hard to start and had 0 torque (would not move at all without stopping) when the engine was cold, after 10 minutes you could could start driving and it did run ok but had lot less power then normal at low rpm, at higher rpm it felt like it had maybe more power.

What about using a engine heater ? Her in North Europe with cold winters engine heaters is pretty much on every car and they recommend using it when it is less then +10c or something like that to reduce wear on all cars. I would think that would help a lot on the Porsche engines with this problem.

Mercedes needing watchful caring hands ? Maybe the new crap Mercedes do but my 1991 Mercedes 190E I bought in 2002 and had for 10 years is the cheapest car to own I ever had, services did cost 1/3 of other cars I owned and parts when you bought not original (better quality) was cheep. I only replaced break pads and the coupe fan, muffler (put in sports muffler) and little things like that. All while I did see everyone else having expensive repairs on their cars almost every year...

Here in Europe prices for uses cars have gone totally crazy, a 1979 Ascona B (a cheep family car with 100hp 2 liter engine) cost 20.000$ to 40.000 which is same as a used Porche Cayman goes for.

As I understand it ALL boxer engines have problem with one side of the cylinder and piston getting worn out faster (simply because of gravity). But the Porsche engines got it double because of how the cylinders and pistons is made and some issues with the oil circulation as I understand it.

I’m sorry I’ve ran nitrous for several years on my Volvo and it’s a stock motor. I truly don’t think you know what you’re talking about. All nitrous is super cool the air which condenses the air which gives more oxygen per square inch.
