Lindsay Graham saying that people need to be called to account for their actions is a level of irony for which the internet just isn't ready.

Either Zuckerborg and Co, need to allow ALL speech on their platform and be free from liability, or they can curate which speech is allowed, and be open to lawsuits. Currently they curate what's allowed, and are free from liability, which is bullshit.

Online child safety starts with the parents. At some point, the government and private companies can do enough to protect the children but it's still limited compared to how parents can have the ability to prevent this. I might be wrong but there should be a law preventing underage children from using social media.

Do we sue the phone companies for people who call and harass you? No. Do you sue a car company when you get into a car accident from a drunk driver? Do you sue the government for building the roads that allowed the drink driver to drive on? No. This is dumb. The issue is social media is acting like a publisher, but claiming they are a platform. If they are treated like a publisher, instead of a platform, then things will be vastly different. Stop letting them have their cake and eat it too. The people who should be held accountable are the people who actually performed the crime, and the people who fell for it.

Because if you hold those companies liable for the individual decisions and actions of anyone who uses the application, they cannot exist because they couldn’t be profitable. Everyone today seems to think they can have their cake and eat it too. You have to make sacrifices to get what you want. Is it so oppressive to expect people to have personal responsibility? Very sad story, but look at the South Carolina representative’s son who killed himself as a result of a shakedown on instagram. To me, letting the parents sue Instagram for what their son did would be wrong. Who was responsible for that child’s well being? Instagram or his parents? Who was in the best position to stop that child’s behavior? I’m sorry, this pervasive “It’s not my fault” attitude in this country simply CANNOT be sustained. If parents are worried it could happen to their children, DON’T LET THEM USE SOCIAL MEDIA!!! If you catch them doing it, take away the phones, the computers, whatever you have to.
