You had some considerable good old tuff wood in that tree. Some nice looking material. I never milled sycamore, but would like to have produced some boards to work with to see what I could do with it. That one gave you and crew a bit of a battle. Really liked that face cut! Aye, sycamore can be nice wood. The softer cousin of maple. Grows like a weed here in the UK. Bowls and spoons at one end of the spectrum and world class violins at the other. 🙂
Hi Jeff, I wonder if you filed your gaff points for this one. Sycamore is pretty hard and only has that weird scaley bark up high. so....did ya did ya did ya? oh, and thanks for getting your bar stuck. I can feel a little more comfortable when mine gets stuck, knowing you do that too. : ) Nice video. George.
reckon you keep yours sharp. Mine suffer a lot of rocks getting around between trees. I just thought that it would really matter in a smooth hard tree like sycamore . Most of the other trees over here in North Carolina have good bark or are not too hard to stay gaffed in. Just a short story, when I was a kid up in Ohio, I climbed any tree that was tall enough to see the river from. there was a really old sycamore and I climbed up to the top parts and as I tried to get a view of the scioto river, the limb I was holding broke and I began the long tumble to the ground. I hit a lot of limbs on the way down and it saved my young life. Hardest part was, hiding the injuries from my folks until I healed up. they would have worn me out for that climb. : )@@jeffschroeder9089
Consider doing the angled cut first and you will match you cuts more often regardless of Humboldt or traditional notch and look like less of a bozo. Great job and stay safe.
