That’s a lot of work to redo cars. You should use welding primer the brown stuff like bridges . Did u ever use phosphoric acid with zinc when it’s still wet, spray, a paper towel with galvanize paint and then wipe that over what you sprayed with the phosphoric acid

I can't over state how much I appreciate how you and others take the time to make these videos. I realize from my own aborted attempt to document the restoration of my 65 fastback that it involves an enormous amount of effort with very little payback. l'm really looking forward to seeing your process of mounting the frame rails. I spent hours on the web reading through debates about which measurements are "correct", the Ford manual vs the various Liskey drawings. Ultimately I couldn't make any of them work. My plan is just to work backwards from the fenders and hood gaps and suspension geometry. Thanks again for sharing your work.

Truly phenomenal... I’ve watch many of the videos and have some questions for you-I’ll leave them in the respective segments so the Q&A makes more sense. I see from your other reply you use 5/16” or 3/8” holes. I’d like to know the following as it would be helpful for my project; -which panel pieces did you drill the 3/8” holes. I’believe the torque boxes are...what else....? (A pillar to outer rocker, front frame rail to front floor support) -are you WFS and heat seatings all the same for these heavier metal pieces as they are for the fire wall to floor pan, and like the wheel well to floor pan. Thanks again...awesome work here...!
@JoDaddysGarage
@JoDaddysGarage 3 года назад
5/16 for the lighter sheet metal, and 3/8 for the heavier pieces. Basically, if the panel is heavier and thicker I upsize to allow for better weld. Wire speed and heat will vary. Not all welders are the same, so I can only say my heat and speed settings for light metal is 2 and 2 typically. I use a Lincoln 140T welder. For the really heavy pieced. (TCI) I used .035 wire.
@mustanglover4945
@mustanglover4945 3 года назад
@@JoDaddysGarage I have the same welder as you so knowing your settings is helpful, at least to me :). Maybe subjective, would you consider the INNER rocker panel and frame rail thicker...? There definitely thicker than skins and wheel wells-did you use the 3/8 hole on those too...?

The torque boxes! Just the thought of them strikes fear into anybody who has restored a Mustang! Possibly the very best rust trap any manufacturer ever designed? The shear amount of work involved in removing,repairing and replacing make them one of the hardest jobs I have ever taken on. Changing them in situ is almost impossible without stripping car this far down? Won't be sad if never have to do job ever again! You making such a neat job of this one.
@JoDaddysGarage
@JoDaddysGarage 7 лет назад
They are a pain. Not sure why they sell them assembled....
@andrewwilson8317
@andrewwilson8317 7 лет назад
anybody got any film footage of the original cars being put together on the factory line? would be handy to know exactly in what order and how they were assembled and welded. The biggest issue in restoration is removing and replacing panels in a different order to construction. End up with impossible flanges and fits, seams sandwiched between other seams and dealing with wrong build order. I have only ever managed to replace torque boxes on bit at a time, wonder just how far down the car has to be to change in a single unit?

How do you deal with moving the vin tag from the original to the doner dash. Aren't the special star rivets used by the OEM's illegal to have outside the car factories?
@JoDaddysGarage

Eagerly binge watching your videos. Will be starting my own 66 GT soon, though it's body is in pretty solid condition. I'm curious why you don't have a "Air Punch and Flange Tool" for creating holes for your spot/plug welds. I saw it on Elin Yakovs channel on his Triumph GT project. Seems like they would save you a whole lot of time and it looks to cost less than $100. I know it can't be used everywhere but when it can...

Hi JoDaddy. One question if I may. Are you planing to treat the fresh air tubes inside the cowl ?. Has these are the biggest problem with rust at least in my mind. Awsome video again... As many here I am impatient to see part 11... Regarding the firewall cuttout to adapt it for a convertible, wasn't it easier to use the upper part of the torque box (the one welded at the end of the video) as a template, as long as you have to separate them? I still don't understand why Dynacorn keeps selling the one part torque box as they also offer the 2 parts one (reference 3652wt and 3653wt).
@JoDaddysGarage

That's not a bad idea. I sometimes get ahead of myself and had I thought of that, it may have been easier. That's why making these videos can be so beneficial to others.

Hey I’m glad I stumbled upon this. Thank you for posting and showing in detail what you’ve done. I’ve been working on a ‘68 Mustang Coupe and need to replace the rusted a-pillar to roofing rail. I’m fairly new at welding and doing this type of work. My car sits outdoors at the moment in Southern Cali. I had a few questions. 1) does the car need to be on a body jig for this type of work? 2) can this be done using a flux core welder (Lincoln Electric Weldpak 125)? 3) what recommendations do you have for me to get started with this type of project?
@JoDaddysGarage
@JoDaddysGarage 4 года назад
1. Not necessarily a jig, but adding cross bracing prior to cutting will be a great benefit. 2. I do not recommend a flux core welder. get something with gas. 3. Good question. Have a look at the various playlists I have on my channel. I have one specific to the 68. Jade.

Barry ..I am up to episode 10 yeayyyy...LOL. Man, in all your videos I see you replace your trunk panels...I am restoring mine and it is NO FUN. Only one spot that needs a piece and weld, but man, removing the factory seam sealer and sanding the trunk is a NIGHMARE even with an angle grinder. Do you ever keep the trunks or do you usually replace ?
@JoDaddysGarage

I replace if rusty. I have sectioned the inner area on a 68 coupe. The part that holds the gas tank.

I was looking at the repairs you did at the base of the windshield pillars (@ about the 1:53 mark) and the rough texture and I assume holes where it was filled in with weld, looks somewhat like an issue I have with the frame of my 70 convertible where the frame meets the top of the windshield frame. Frame has that same roughness like it rusted and some is missing/ pitted and I was wondering how to fix that. I assume the convertible top frame is steel and can be welded to fill it in then ground and smoothed, but would something like a JB Weld work for that too since it is not so much structural but cosmetic?
@JoDaddysGarage
@JoDaddysGarage 7 лет назад
It is steel, and I prefer welding. The difficulty with JB weld is that it may not stay in place anyway. With a little flexing, it could come loose.

@JoDaddysGarage
@JoDaddysGarage 6 лет назад
I have not done a skin on a Mustang, but I've done them on other cars. It really depends how far you want to go. If you have a good upper section, and have some experience, a skin isn't too bad. I just prefer a full quarter so it is a mostly seamless finish.
