I just finished a solo trip up and then down the Champlain Canal in New York State. After trying several times to make a video to explain how I lock through solo, I FINALLY got some good footage and edited it into a video. I sure hope you like it.

The new mic sounds great! Very clear. The new camera angle is super helpful too. I've only seen large commercial vessels go through locks, so it's neat to see what a smaller craft does. Also, the barge was making up excuses for not tending to his radio properly. There is no way he has that short of a range. Minimum range is 5-10NM. It is line of sight, but the antenna are at least as tall as your boat on the tug.

It could be the range of the radio on the lock. Most of those guys are using handheld because they’re in constant motion when a boat is locking through. So I’ve seen them with handheld. He might not be transmitting as far as he could be.

BBBBBBBad ass. Love your boat's name. From my SV in Alaska. Single handing is most satisfying to the soul. Way to go Captain, your competence is very evident. Might see you around one day!

Thank you so much! I'm hoping to get to Alaska next summer. We'll see if I can get up a group trip. I'll definitely be on the inside passage for at least part of the summer.

Thank you Maria. I'm in the first stages of looking at the Loop. Locks kind of concerned me, but you made it look easy. I'm sure with more boats in a lock there are other common sense precautions such a fenders on both sides. Your instructions on how to lock were were clear, you took the apprehension out of it for me.
@MariaLanger
@MariaLanger 3 месяца назад
Glad it was helpful! If there are boats on both sides of the lock, they should still not be close enough in the middle to require fenders on both sides. But I did say “should.“ Some boats are very wide. When I get in with other boats that are tying onthe port side, I try to stagger my position on the starboard side so I’m not right next to them. But the lock I’ll be going through this morning is likely to be pretty crowded. We’ll see what happens.

I have been doing the LOOP with 15 RU-vid Cruisers. I just found your channel and I can tell you that NONE of THEM has given me the information about locking procedure. Here I should add that I am a deep sea sailor with 55,000 NM in the N Atlantic, 9,000 NM in the Labrador Sea and Arctic Ocean and 5,500 NM in the Caribbean Sea and Gulf of Mexico....NOT many Locks there!

I like to explain how to do things. Other folks treat the Loop like it's a Marina to Marina, Docktails to Docktails experience. It was way more than that. I want people to learn from my videos. More to come; I promise!

What a great video for my wife and I...extremely helpful. I noticed you do something that caused me trouble picking up our mooring pendant last week. I stepped out to grab the pendant and suddenly realized that I was still in gear. I was able to hold tight and get back to tap it into neutral, but something I really need to be more mindful of before I step away from my seat. I wish that the Volvo throttle had a more solid CLICK when it went into neutral.

I'm really careful, since I've done that, too. I've also hit my thrusters, which are right there.

Glad you enjoyed the video! I'm not a member of the Looper organization because I don't like its management and profit-driven policies. (It's not a "club," you know; its a for-profit company.) The burgee was given to me as a gift and I flew it to meet other loopers.

Thank you for your very thorough explanations. Can you describe what you would have done if the lockmaster had requested a port side tie?
@MariaLanger
@MariaLanger 3 месяца назад
I was already prepped for a portside tie. The fenders were in place. I would just do exactly the same thing but go up to my port side window. I’ve done it in the past. I usually bring along my thruster remote so I can fine-tune my position if necessary without leaving that window.
@dougludwig1015

Quick question, do you run with the bumpers out or are you confident enough with the thrusters(lucky) that you wont rub the wall? Great video.
@MariaLanger
@MariaLanger 3 месяца назад
I set the boat up at the beginning of the day for a day of locking. I have four fenders on each side and they are all positioned along the rub rail of the boat. That's the widest part of my boat. So when I hit the wall -- And I do hit the wall -- it's the fenders that take the hit. I set up both sides of the boat because although I prefer locking from the starboard side, sometimes I have to lock for the portside. When you're by yourself, it's important to have everything ready in advance. I hope that answers your questions! Thanks for taking the time to ask them!

Hi Maria! I have just discovered your channel - great content! I have often wondered about locking single handed and have not seen many videos about it. Yours was informative and had great video. I plan to do the loop in the future - working towards it!! It’s so nice to a woman captain also. I am a new boater and keep an old 80s Mainship near Midland, Georgian Bay 🇨🇦 Would love to connect if you’re passing through there this summer on your loop. Best of luck and enjoy!

Thanks so much! I try to make my videos educational and skip the hype. I didn't stop at Midland, but I did go through Georgian Bay. I love the area -- best cruising of the Loop. I'll be back one day, maybe as soon as 2026. I'm near Mackinaw Island now, heading into Lake Michigan tomorrow.

This is so fun! Thank you for sharing your knowledge and your journey with us! I have a couple questions if you don't mind. It looks like your flag on the bow is hung upside down. What's the significance of that? Also you mentioned you didn't want to use your bow thrusters and I was curious as to why not. Thank you!
@MariaLanger
@MariaLanger 3 месяца назад
The flag is upside down because I am not a member of the AGLCA. I got the flag for free and I don't feel that I should hang at the normal way since I'm not a member. As for the thrusters, my thrusters are electric and there is a definite possibility that they can burn out with overuse. I can also run down the thruster battery, which is the last battery in my collection of batteries to get charged. So I tried to use my thrusters as a little as possible. But when I do need to use my thrusters, I use them.

@MariaLanger

I honestly don't see a difference if I use them or not. I need to talk to some folks at the Ranger Rendezvous next month to make sure I'm using them correctly.

The only locks I've been in that strictly enforced PFDs for people outside the boat (on the decks or gunwales but not inside the cabin), were the Inland Waterways like the Illinois River and Tenn-Tom Waterway.

They are just GoPros, mostly on RAM mounts. I have two GoPro 8s and one GoPro 11. The GoPro 11 supports a microphone that I already had, so I was pretty lucky to try it and find it working. I think the quality of the sound is much better in this video than all the others.
