If anyone has any further questions regarding the MWFly engine line, I would be happy to help in anyway that I can...

I'd be interested in comments you could provide regarding the performance of the engine in your Sonex. B Model or original, T-tail or Y-tail, trike,or tail drag, what standard equipment does it still retain compared to what has been added for the engine conversion. What Vspeeds are you now seeing, takeoff and landing performance etc? Thank you!!!
@flynic3
@flynic3 2 года назад
@@brodytucker3922 It is a tailwheel legacy Sonex with the B22D, pushing roughly 115hp. We are just now finalizing the Airworthiness certificate currently however the previous owner sent photos showing performance of 135knots at 1,200ft. Once we complete our phase one testing in the next few weeks, I will post more hard numbers.

It has been flying for about 2 years now and is going great… Finishing up on our second condition inspection currently. I have really enjoyed the MWFly engine thus far and operation has been a breeze compared to a more traditional aircraft engine. I find once the temps are in the green, I am not paying much attention to the EIS read outs as everything stays in the green. There is currently another builder installing the 160hp Redline engine on a Zenith CH-750 STOL here in the US. MWFly has continued to improve the design since this video including carbon fiber intake manifold option and a brand new and more efficient head design.

An excellent and brilliant design. To make the motor so a gear box can be installed on it is what every aircraft motor design should have... Everything else they have engineered into the operating systems is just really good engineering for reliability. I believe this company MWFLY has just raised the bar for all the other aircraft motor builders to follow.

Cool, I've seen a few of their engines on Barnstormers but didn't know anything about 'em. Thanks Bryan! 👍👍👍

I've seen glimpses of this engine for years now. (At first I thought it was a Subaru conversion/derivative). Your "building-block" architecture is very nice. With 2.55 liters and a 4700 rpm redline at your disposal, you should be able to pull some stunning numbers when boosted. That would be a nice fit for STOL drag and high performance back-country aviation.

What is the TBO? How difficult is a major overhaul for a local machine shop?

One of the problems gyroscopes have is an area of the engine which a power take off can be accessed for rotor pre-rotators. Have this been addressed?

My immediate reaction to stories like this is, invariably, 'Italian....? huh, what....?' and quickly reverses course when I consider everything under the umbrella of 'aviation,' (and let's not forget the marine world as well) that Italian engineers, designers and manufacturers have been doing for decades and decades....sneaky good and compelling products. Nice get Bryan. (hey....what happened to 'chasing aviation?')

Nice to see a new engine coming on the market. I would like to know, why are so many people associated with aircraft choosing black shirts. Light blue or green or tan, anything but black. Really depressing. Light blue with black slacks looks really smart. Anyway, just a thought. I hope Oshkosh goes ahead, One day I hope to be able to afford to go. Thank you, cheers from Wiz

Interesting comments about generator/electrical failure. The engine control unit can function as low as 7.2 volts. This is pretty low. Even old 350 CU Chevy v-8 engines can do this. So his comments are not unreasonable and no extreme technology would be required. If one could afford the weight, an auxiliary wind driven small charging unit could be deployed as some airliners do. His claim of 50 mins run time before the battery depletion is believable provided other demands on the electrical system were shut down. The fully coolant heat exchange system has advantages such as the elimination of shock cooling as he alluded. The heath of the coolant system is as important than the redundancy of the injection system possibly more so. There is alway air cooling, it can never be taken away. No so with a coolant system. How long can the engine run without coolant? How long can the engine run with no oil pressure? Having said that oil pumps and coolant pumps are old school and proven and not subjected to extreme demands. I would have more trust in them. The main issue is we are participating in an industry which is dominated by a monopoly fueled by a demand of weight and power by designers self imposed limitations. If MW fly can produce a reliable engine for a significant reduction in purchase cost, they will slowly gain in the market share. We need this desperately as a aviation is fast becoming out of reach except for those who can afford $37k engines and $35k instrument panels which yields $150k kits for puddle jumpers!

I'll believe when I see it. The Italians have had little success with making reliable engines and vehicles Lots of show, and little go, and high maintenance. Luv your channel dude. only 70K subs... really??

I have seen them posting a lot on social recently. Then I remembered them trying to work with a couple KIT manufacturers in the past. Peaked my interest. So we decided to get them on an interview to learn for ourselves what they are about. 70k Subs? One at a time. It takes longer getting them honest. :-) Thank You for your support! We appreciate you!

Italian philosophy to things may not make the most sense to average people's. Function flows from the feelings of the design only constrained by set parameters and the ambition to create something spectacular is the motivation.

For STOL the gearbox isn't desirable because of the torque per se, it's because of the prop. You really want a longer prop with a shallower pitch (low gear/climb prop), but if the engine makes it's 100hp at 3400 rpm, then a longish prop (say a 78") will have tip speeds over mach 1. When you gear the same engine down to say 2700 rpm, then you can run an 82" prop in a much more efficient zone, with the engine making it's rated horsepower (actually more, since you now spin up to 4700). In other words, without the gearbox, you are forced to run a cruise prop or give up 20HP. With a gearbox you can run whatever prop you want, and make all the HP the engine is capable of. What's the con? Well, aside from weight: gearbox. Not like nothing has ever gone wrong with those......
