In a panel discussion organized by the Modern War Institute, three guests discuss counterterrorism efforts in the Philippines, especially during the intense Battle of Marawi. Retired Philippine Army Lt. Gen. Danilo Pamonag was the ground commander of the main battle area during that battle, and later became the overall commander of the Joint Task Force Marawi. Retired US Army Maj. John Spencer is the Modern War Institute's Chair of Urban Warfare Studies and is widely recognized as one of the leading voices identifying the challenges-and exploring solutions-of urban warfare. Maj. Cole Livieratos is teaches in the Defense and Strategic Studies Program at the United States Military Academy and served as a psychological operations team leader from 2014 to 2016, working in the Philippines in 2015-2016.

I'm was a former scout ranger of the 1st scout ranger regiment who fought at Marawi siege. It was brutal fighting to be honest. We were trained to fight in the dense jungles of the Philippines then we were suddenly thrown into densely populated city for us to fight in. Had to adapt to the situation. What were seen in the slide was true 105mm field artillery gun being used as a direct fire weapon like what the Germans did with their 88's in WW2 which was used primarily as an anti-aircraft gun. Whst amazed me was the M113 being hauled to the 2nd floor of that building which is shown 51:34 I wasn't amazed at the situation but with the building itself. That thing easily wieghts 20+ tons and the building pillars were able to support that thing.

The good general didnt mention one of the most important innovation from the battle of marawi was the adaptation of coconut lumber as an additional layer of armor to protect the scant tank resources of the philippine military. Coco lumber is made from coconut tree trunks and are actually hard to nail. Nails will bend when you hammer it into the wood making them ideal in preserving the metal armor. Filipino soldiers improvised by attaching it to their tanks to prematurely detonate the RPG before the metal armor to kèep the crew safe inside

Its more difficult for the Armed forces to fight in the jungle than the urban, because the jungle is widely open for sniper ,land mines and the area familiarize by enemy, while the enemy at the urban warfare will able to know exactly the place for assaulting other than the widely jungle and the enemy will able to escape,so that's why the AFP can easily adopted the best tactics in urban warfare.

As this lecture pointed out this was happening at several levels. Strategic, operational and tactical. My previous critique was primarily tactical. Strategically and Operationally the AFP did a B+. The macro perspective is civilian casualties were kept remarkably low. Maute and ASG was prevented from radicalizing the Muslim populace, MNLF and MILF. The tenous peace in Mindanao has largely been kept.

His answer in the first question is very shallow. You don’t address terrorism just by infrastructure buildings. First is to address the ideology of Islam where violence is coming from. Mary rich islamic countries are supporting extreme islamic beliefs because it’s embedded in their ideology. So address that first. Second is the fundings. Who is giving the money to these terrorists and from where is it coming? Third is where are the weapons coming from? Where and how did they acquire sniper rifles and machine guns? Fourth is address the local islamic terror groups how they still thrive? They could not continue without support from local community. So community involvement is a key! Develop intelligence group. Fifth is community development. Last is afp modernization. The general needs to learn more.

the marawi siege was a total failure of the system, intelligence , defense and response,. Of course the Philippine government would come out "victorious" because eventually supplies for the terrorist will run out, but.. it took the govt to clean them out for almost 5 months. and lets not forget, this ( the preparation) happened right under their noses

Lol... Taking that long to liberates the city is no joke! Think of the hostages first, and to those civilians that are stuck in that Battle zone. Thats not an easy task to counter and at the same time, to rescue a herd of individuals from a armed terorist that are positioned already in that area. To be true, your argument is invalid!
