Exceptional Weeklong Music Production Seminars
www.mixwiththemasters.com
The MIX With The MASTERS Seminar Series is a chance for recording and mixing engineers to work closely with A-List record producers, engineers and mixers and improve their skills in music production. The events take place at Studio La Fabrique in the South of France.
At the end of his Weeklong Seminar in August 2014, Mixer Tom Elmhirst took the time to answer a few questions from the MWTM Facebook Page.

for me, I work better and more efficient in the early morning on an empty stomach and sipping on tea or coffee and dressed comfortable, and I make sure not to have the beat and volume too loud so I don't blast my ears. I also try to keep recording light and playful for example when im recording my vocals , and I mess up , I dont get angry I try to voice and character change and joke and make fun of myself and just be silly in between takes and I take breaks around the hour to 90 minute range 5 minute breaks , bathroom breaks, and silence breaks, but a good session for me can last 3 1/2 to 8 hours

kick ...go to chorus and analize bass guitar. see if the fundamental is around 70 hz or 80 hz , then your kick should be about 50 or 55 hz . But if the kick is also at 70 hz...then the choice was bad. Change the kick with one at 50 or 55 hz. if you want add a sample kick to your kick to help it. Balance levels and align the kick in phase.

Tom Elmhirst knows what he is doing, now everybody is using so much parallel compression and parallel everything, he pretty much don't use it at all...that thing add so much phasing BS!

Hey pals, I'm so confused, why on earth do you need a chain of several compressors when all they do is reduce dynamic range and you can have balanced vocals after one compressor; and why would you need those darn expensive hardware ones when all they do is reduce volume; people always say digital can't emulate analog but cmon man, you tryna look professional and why would it ever be necessary to have these things anymore
@lunalunic1834
@lunalunic1834 5 лет назад
every comp feed the other one,it s all about ears and taste,well digital will never be like analog..
@cerspence
@cerspence 5 лет назад
I used to wonder the same things. Compressors don’t all just reduce dynamic range the same one way in varying degrees. Just like he stated here in the video; each compressor achieves different goals. One could be for peaks (fast release), one could be for picking up slack aka bringing up the quiet parts (slower release). Analog equipment adds color and character in terms of saturation. Also all compressors vary in their dynamic effect even when set to what might read as the exact same att/release/ratio. Engineers get to know specific compressors they have at their disposal and ‘master’ them. Once you fully understand a specific piece of hardware it’s likely you’re well off sticking to it. Watch more tuts and Q & A’s. Probably shouldn’t doubt what this guy says btw, he’s world class and it’s likely that to most people reading these comments you, my friend, come off as an absolute beginner.
