A demo of my MX-Phoenix hexapod robot walking outdoor on terrain and stairs. My largest hexapod so far, featuring 6x MX-64T and 12x MX-106T servos. All tibia and body parts are 3D printed and designed with Fusion 360. The C++ code (DynaZgait engine and Phoenix code) runs on a Teensy 3.6 MCU.

Great work - Would be interesting to add IR distance sensors to each foot such that ground clearance in each step can be kept to a minimum
@ZentaRobotics
@ZentaRobotics 7 лет назад
Thanks. That would require several sensors since a sensor pointing straight downward wouldn't detect an higher obstacle ahead.
@AxfordIndustries
@AxfordIndustries 7 лет назад
Could you detect side impacts from torque sensing at the joints? To avoid need side contact sensors?
@sethitsseth
@sethitsseth 7 лет назад
Damian Axford IR sensors are highly innacurate and return erroneous results when faced with curved or "fuzzy" surfaces, also the sun is an issue
@AxfordIndustries
@AxfordIndustries 7 лет назад
true... was just first thing that sprang to mind, plus cheap to experiment with. Sun prob. not an issue unless its lying on its back, feet waving in the air ;)

Very nice, the body rotations @ 3:10 are so smooth. The gloss on the 3d printed parts really fits the design. Do the leg switches still detect good touchdowns at high walking speeds?

You should try using a machine learning algorithm to train the robot legs to work more fluidly. It seems to bounce when it walks instead of act how say a real life spider "body" would.

Dear Zenta, i am in need of your help! I own a phoenix like hexapod, self build from scratch. i recently rebuild the entire hexapod with 3D printed parts. I also replaced the electronics to a raspberry pi (python) => arduino nano (for running the phoenix code) => PCA9685 16ch pwm servo controllers with an i2c interface. I wondered if you could help me convert the phoenix code to work with these (nowadays the new standard) ne servo controllers. if it would be possible to convert the entire code to python, even better. But arduino code is just fine too. I just really need your help since i don't understand what is for driving the ssc-32 and what i should replace... please contact me!!!

Nice work Kåre. Are you considering using custom 3D printed aluminum tibias if you have time (ref: www.hrl.com/news/2017/09/20/metallurgy-breakthrough-hrl-engineers-3d-print-high-strength-aluminum-solve-ages-old-welding-problem-using-nanoparticles)? It may be interesting to have the entire structural design optimized for aluminum using software like Altair Hyperworks. You smartly avoided sheer stress-related issues others reported in hex spider designs by using Interbotix MX-196 Tibias... I was unfamiliar with the Aceton Vapor treatment of ABS, thank you for laying that out on your blog. Also, would you consider posting your stl or design files to your GitHub? (I'm relatively sure you could have your next round of open-source development costs crowdfunded). Looking forward to your future work!
