I have to disagree with you on the Birkin bag. I think it's just a bag, a tool to carry things, and nothing more. I think the cult status it has achieved is wonderful, but it's still just a leather bag. I don't think people should carry it to signify their social status. If someone wants to use it as a grocery bag, more power to them. If someone wants to keep it pristine as a symbol of something, that's their choice. Missed yah!

I definitely agree with you. Trashing the Birkin is performative just as much as being over precious with it. It's a class distinction. Also, there are people who are genuine fans of the brand and people who aren't and don't really care to understand the significance of your points.

Hello Tiwa. I’m from the U.K. and in my sixties. Back in the day a bag chosen by women, often was a match for your shoes. So, say you had a mock croc black bag, you;d buy mock croc shoes. Night time going out bags were either a clutch, for your ciggies lipstick and powder, or a thin strapped either metallic or embroidered affair. My dream bag would be a size 40 black sellier the same back Carolyn Bessette Kennedy owned, it was a work bag for her.

I completely agree with you. I find it kind of silly when people make videos putting VCA jewelry and beads and knick knacks on their bag because I doubt Jane sat down and threw all that stuff on her bag at one time. She collected that stuff over time and could get those bags for free whenever she wanted. If I spend my hard earned money on Hermes bags I’m going to take care of my stuff like I take care of everything else in my possession.
I really love that you have a realistic understanding of and appreciation for your housekeeping staff. Your realness is part of why you're one of the few luxury people I stick with. I personally love the look of a loved and lived-in Birkin. Because it *is* just a bag. But I also love and appreciate people who endeavor to keep their Birkins pristine, because they're also art and investments! Both are true for me 😂 I don’t want to beat my Kelly up but I also decided that for my own sanity I couldn’t obsess over keeping it perfect. I use (not abuse) it within reason but I enjoy it because it is an iconic and beautiful design and the slouch will come when its meant to.

24:40 I am really enjoying your discussion about the "Jane Birkin - ifying" the Birkins. You are so right. But the fact that this needs pointing out is my biggest surprise. It is sad to think that Jane Birkin herself will be disappointed to see how her name has been used for things she never stood for. I heard she was sick of being associated with what the Birkin bag has become when she was still around. Hermes only made this bag for her because she was carrying a basket as a bag and ended up with her stuff all over the floor during a flight with the CEO of Hermes at the time. Or so the stories I've heard about it. Personally, I love the Natural Vache and Barenia leathers the most from Hermes. So I am on the spectrum of using my own Birkin bags pretty casually and very ruggedly. But to think that this is something to be enforced is beyond ridiculous. I am so glad I do not have TikTok. 😅 Thank you for this conversation.

I completely agree with you with the “Jane Birkin-ifying”. I do believe if someone is posting on social media “Jane Birkinifying my Birkin” it’s pretty much a contradiction. To shoot, fresh produce going into the bag, edit and upload - goes against the ethos of “Jane Birkinifying” my bag because the ethos thereof is to be nonchalant.

hmmmm, i always thought "jane birkin-ifying" your birkin meant personalizing it for your lifestyle, whatever that may be. So if you're MaryKate you abuse your kellys, if you're Victoria Beckham, your birkins look pretty pristine - both ways are valid because both ways reflect the user's values / personality / lifestyle and neither is capping for a clicks on social media. Putting groceries in your handbag (whatever handbag it is) is just dumb and, as you said, performative. That's not what they are designed for.

Agree that these people’s use is disingenuous - after all, they don’t appear to have Jane Birkin’s air of insouciance and bohemian lifestyle. Their approach is calculated and comes across as inauthentic.

I think simply put, Birkinifying your Birkin simply means using it in the utilitarian way it’s designed to be used. If you want to preserve your bags in a pristine way, no one has the right to tell you, you can’t. I personally think black or dark colored Birkins look better when they’ve been “lived in”, the lighter colors not so much. I have a B35 in trench. It wouldn’t look great Birkinified 😂

That’s the scent of my current shower gel! I haven’t had any trouble with leather soles. I did once put espadrilles still damp from the rain back in their clear plastic shoe box and they grew all this green mold 😬🫨🙄

What winds me up are the people who baby their bags to the point they hardly use them or are so preoccupied when they do they should really have stayed at home .. often because they are concerned with the resale value. It’s a bit er petit bourgeois. Look, there’s a tradition in french high fashion of irreverence .. that early balmain show where the mannequin dragged her fur coat along the podium upsetting the ashtrays into the laps of those watching on the front row. It’s chic not to care .. insouciant. That said, I think you tread the line .. look after your bag, respect it, enjoy it as it ages but above all use it. I wear my h belt all day every single day whether I’m clearing ditches or going to a fancy restaurant. For one thing it brings the cost per wear down to the minimum 😀

For me the most natural thing is to use my bags without unrealistic reservation and pair that sense of familiarity with my lengthy experience with these bags to land somewhere between taking care and consistent use! So far it’s gone well enough for people to think I carry my Birkin in a vacuum sealed container 😭😂 it really isn’t the case
