Clothes used to routinely come with linings when they made sense for the particular garment. I miss this since it really made the garment drape better. We wore slips back in the day but I much prefer linings. Because linings don’t often show and linings don’t (or shouldn’t) shift or creep like slips can.

Love your tutorials! I love full slips, half slips, camisoles and lined garments. I was born in 1952 and raised to wear a full slip, half slip, petticoat and/or camisole with everything. I also had 2 pant slips (my mothers term, don’t know if correct). LOL!!! I hated petticoats they itched like crazy, but they did make the fuller skirt stand out and make a statement. 😀

The content starting at 9:27 was what I really needed to hear someone go through. I have some light cotton and some cotton lining for a dress for my daughter, but I was lost how to approach combining the two. Thanks.

Wonderful timing for all of us considering our summer and holiday sewing. I’m already hit by the Rhapsody bug and have made a jazzy red white and blue dress ready for our coronation party for King Charles…but a couple of lined versions would be ideal for a floaty holiday vibe without any fear of too much exposure (1948 vintage: don’t/can’t do exposure!). Thanks so much.

I grew up wearing both slips AND lined clothing. It's still my preference. I will add lings and make custom slips for specific garments. Clothes hang better, wear better, and last longer. But I'm a dinosaur 🦕.

I had used a Bemberg (cupro) for lining on a jacquard for lining a dress for my son's wedding. Lt. weight, breathable, durable, anti-static! Apparently made from cotton. It is beautiful stuff. I was most happy with it. Try to find some that is light weight. It was a summer wedding.

Why not using cotton batiste or voile?
@MrsMTMomma
@MrsMTMomma Месяц назад
@@cor3944 That might work depending on how sheer your garment fabric is.. A batiste over same would likely not have the desired opacity.. Being a baby boomer, I still have an off white and black full and 1/2 slip in my lingerie drawer. I discarded the “pettipants” as I found them ofen uncomfortable.

FYI: Slips were not only worn by women in the 1950's. They've been worn by women in the '60's, 70's, 80's and 90's. Women still wear slips to this day. They have a purpose and that purpose hasn't gone away. What has gone away is the modesty of many women who may no longer care about what shows through their clothes for others to see.

Also, dresses hang better on your body with a slip; it stops the dress fabric from clinging and going between your legs. Generally, I think we seem to have lost the ability to dress properly, there’s no pride in how we dress any longer.

I'd like to add a lining to the backs of my nice T-shirts so they don't ride up over my backside. Should I create the lining on grain or on the bias?
@LoveNotions
@LoveNotions Месяц назад
For knits, cut as normal. For wovens, bias is usually a good idea but it depends on the pattern. ~J

What would you recommend for lining a light jersey knit tank dress. I think I will finish the neck and armholes with binding.
@LoveNotions
@LoveNotions Месяц назад
You can get lining fabric that has stretch, but easier to find is stretch mesh or even more jersey. Just make sure it's not stretchier than your jersey or it could hang oddly (cut a few inches shorter than you hem to help avoid any peekaboos!) ~J

Hi and thank you for the excellent video! I want to know if I do the quick line under line self line lining, how does one tackle the darts? Do I still consider the lining dart part of the outer fabric dart? Or... sew them separately which may cause other issues.??
@LoveNotions
@LoveNotions Год назад
In this particular instance, I believe since Tessa treated the main and lining as one piece, she also sewed the darts enclosing both fabrics. ~k

You forgot a lined pant. I love a lined pant makes you feel like couture dressing. Question? Would peach skin be good for the slip?
@LoveNotions
@LoveNotions Год назад
A lined pant sounds amazing! I think with peach skin, it totally depends. It does tend to have that sticky type of feeling so it may not work with every fabric. ~K

Could you line a boucle jacket in the underlining method?
@LoveNotions

You could, though most jackets are usually full attached lined. But if you're mostly worried about the bodice of the jacket, underlining would be just fine! Just depends on your goals for the final garment. ~J

Here are 3 options: You can tack the lining to the main at the slit area, let them flow freely separately, or do a half lining that doesn't come all the way down to the slit. ~K
