This makes me think of one of my best music lessons. Many years ago, I studied jazz theory for a bit. He taught at the piano (“I don’t care what instrument you play, you learn theory at the piano!”), and he emphasized a four step process for each chord - read it on paper, say the name out loud, feel the shape in your fingers, and finally listen to the sound of the chord. By engaging these different active and passive parts of our mind all together, he argued, you learn better and it sticks in your brain more. He’d have totally supported this video.

Thanks for some simple but wonderful advice for those learning to play, and a good dollop of self-understanding for those of us who have been at it for a while. Forty years ago I am sure that I spent some considerable proportion of my misspent youth on my knees, leaning backwards until my long and curly hair touched the floor, while I indulged in a spot of axe-wanking well beyond the twelth fret. Coming out of a solo would then require leaning forward back to upright, then standing up and leaning forward onto a power chord rooted somewhere on the lower E string, possibly with a bit of jumping thrown in for good measure. Thirty-seven years ago I gave in to my original love and started playing with blues bands, rather than over-rehearsed rock and metal bands. That's when I learned that you lean forward for the high notes and backwards for the lower notes, I haven't leaned backwards for the high notes since. Well, not that much anyway.

Thank you, Maestro. I loved the idea of joining one's body to the guitar. It reminds me of the way I've seen Hasidim "shuckle" as they pray, rocking and swaying back and forth to the silent rhythmn and melodies of holy words.

Another gem of advice! One of the best explanations on how to actually use scales. I started noticing these movements lately, transcribing solos of Mayer, Bonamassa and Clapton. They sound so nice to me and for a long time I thought it was some magic, but most of it is moving around the scale/changes + emphasizing the melody. Thanks :)

Thankyou for this practical yet simple video. It's really helped me feel the music and understand how improvisation works better. Now to just practice and enjoy what I'm playing again after a long plateau in my guitar journey! Mainly due to getting caught up in the theory and forgetting that this is about playing around and having fun, not being perfect!

FINALLY!!! Someone instructing on youtube that "gets it"...not surprised it's Mr. Stich... Lead guitar is SUPPOSED to ADD something to the work...i.e. ... the "sound" and "mood" of the piece...just "running scales" isn't what's needed. Thanks, Ian, you are the champ of instructors. You hear and FEEL the beat, rhythm and mood of the artist's and songwriter's hard work...and create real MUSIC. Keep teaching and coaching, Ian. You're the best on the 'Tube. ... Crossbow
