Ahh the good old days! No DCC, no sound, no worries! Just running trains! Thanks for sharing, brought back many memories 🤩

Yes, many happy hours spent on my old Lima layout.

The old Lima pancake motor is one of the most reliable and easily repaired model train power units ever. This is why there are still so many old Lima trains out there and running. Was never given the credit it deserved back in the day. But now it has become kind of legendary and for good reason. Also Mazok Rot and Zinc Pest will never be a problem for Lima locos.

Yes, the motor's i've refurbished have all brushed up nicely, and they seem to run even better on DCC.

I so enjoyed this video. I like the older retro models as they have a special place in my heart. Thanks for sharing.

OH Chris, this was absolutely wonderful! Seems like you and I followed a similar path, trips to Reading etc, I so remember those days with 50s and HSTs blasting out of the station. How wonderful you have video of your old layout that looks fantastic. You probably know already I love Lima stuff and after my service plan I think it can run just as good as anything else can, and that's just on DC :) Brilliant stuff mate, all the best, Mike

Thanks Mike, Yes Reading was fantastic during the 80's and it was fairly easy for me to get to from Southampton. It's where I eventually saw The Queen Mother (not the real one!) which seemed to be the rarest 47 for some reason. (I saw your vid about your model of it). Your Lima motor servicing video was very helpful, and they really do run well on DCC.

Lima was a breath of fresh air at the time. Compare the hornby class 37 to the Lima one. Actually compare everything Lima brought out compared to what you could get at the time, class 31,37,40,47. Locos that, ok weren't perfect, but far better than what was available

Yes, there was definitely a reason why I almost exclusively bought Lima during the 80's! I did have a Hornby 47 "Lady Diana Spencer" but it was no where near as good as the Lima 47's.

Lima are underrated. They were cheap by todays standards, even accounting for inflation. Also reliable and very easy to maintain to this day.

I've thoroughly enjoyed watching your video; the Limas look much better than I would have guessed and I really do admire what you've achieved with your layout. Thank you for sharing. Mike (W)

Thanks for watching Mike, the Lima's look OK, and apart from the 50's, they all perform well once they motor's have had a bit of refurbishment.

Thanks for sharing Chris, what a gem to have your old railway on video from back then ! You certainly had an impressive Lima collection & a sizable layout in the 80's. Lovely to see the old favourites still working on the new layout, really enjoyed the vid. I still enjoy running my Lima 117 DMU and fitted it with a DCC chip last year. All the best.......Andy

Thanks Andy, Yes I found the footage on an old Video cassette. It's funny how some elements of that layout worked through into the design of the new one. I always liked the Lima 117 dmu, and it's great that we can convert them to DCC and still run them.

Nothing wrong with a bit of Lima, I like Lima. The BR ferry and parcels vans are nice

Hi, what a great look back at those Lima locos. I remember having a load of them back in the 80's too, they were simple with their Pan-cake motor, you either got a rough one or a silky smooth one, but the bodies were streets ahead of the Hornby offerings at the time. I recall having three 50's, and about five 47's, including "Red Star", "Doncaster Enterprise" and "Fire Fly". I forget how many 31's, 37's and I think some 20's too.....Brilliant to see them still running................Thank you. All the Best Dave. Oh and I liked the music!

Thanks Dave - glad you enjoyed seeing the old Lima's still running. The seem to run a bit better now I converted them to DCC. Do you still have any of yours? Chris.

@@melchestermodelrailway hi Chris, no I don't have any Lima left anymore. I think I traded them all in 25 years ago, omg was I really that long ago. I'm surprised, but can see why they are still so popular models, maybe I should of hung on to a few especially 47455 and 47522.

It’s nice to go back to the old day . My first loco was a Brush Type 2 Class 31 from 1965 . I still run them on my layout, although I’m not DCC obviously . That 33 still looks the part on your layout . Good video again .

Thanks Russell, it is nice to still run old models, even if they're not up to more recent standards. They have great sentimental value!

Absolutely identify with the 'abducted by aliens' notion! I similarly came back into model railways to find it a much more realistic place, but still love all my old stock. I loved your work in action👍

I very much enjoyed that Chris and I have had some Limas converted to DCC and lights installed. Do you find that any partucular Decoder works better than others ? Cheers Kev
@melchestermodelrailway

Hi Kev, I've used a hornby 8 pin, which seems to work fine. I did try a sound decoder but it blew for some reason - don't think i'll try that again!

Please do tell me what the music is. Sounds Widor-ian. Beautiful.

Thanks very much. It is Widor-ian, but it's actually Gigout's Toccata. From a video on my music channel. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-yCVNGBrsL1A.html

The digitisation process scrambled the sound from the VHS for some reason, so it wasn't possible to use it unfortunately. The later scenes are without music, so hope you enjoyed those.
