I needed a set of coaches for my Hunslet and with nothing being available on the market it was time to get out the paints and decals and redo a Lima coach. I show you my process from start to finish in this video.

The coach looks well. One tip on the bogies. The Lima ones were the wrong away around so if you are adding a new coupling hook add it to the opposite end to where the Lima coupling was located. This applies to both this Lima 2B and their air-conditioned Mk 2s as well.

Very good video. Over in New Zealand we use the MK2 carriage on our "Capital Connection" service, Runs from Palmerston North to Wellington (The capital city) and then from Wellington every week day. I'm planning on painting them in that paint scheme (with the addition of some mods) with the Lima MK2 (As its the best I've currently got) So very informative. Thank you!

Great conversion Paul, there seems to be a lot people buying up the old lima stock and converting them. but is worth doing and not only that they look as good as new. if not better. thanks again for a great tutorial...........cheer's Tony

@@GalgormHall Well thanks nevertheless for passing it on and thanks for the IPA tip as well. I have loads of it and I was going to use brake fluid on some of these but I'll use IPA instead now. Looks to do a good job. Are you just putting the coaches back into the used IPA a few times Paul?

@@murphaph for these Lima coaches they got dipped twice. The second dip was really just a precautionary one to ensure I hadn’t missed any paint removal after the first one. Paul

What a difference the flush glazing makes. Fantastic like all your videos. Loved this. I have a faint memory of Irish Rail having similar stock running between Dublin and Galway and an even fainter memory of Lima actually doing these?

Hi. Lima never did Irish mk2a/b/c stock. Murphy Models commissioned Bachmann to make mk2a coaches in IR and IE livery but there were only 4 prototype mk2a's. These as well as the rest of the IR mk2 air braked stock was made up of ex BR mk2b & c coaches (only around 18 in total). Like the NIR ones they have to be made from resprayed Limas. Some mk2as had the centre door plated over by IR so these ones need a Bachmann BR donor to be filled and resprayed. IR used rebuilt Werkspoor EGVs (converted from GSVs) in these trains which weren't as nice as the uniform look of the NIR rakes with matching EGV.

Interesting to see the process for converting the coaches. What a dilemma on the Hunslet; but is the dilemma whether you buy another Hunslet, or when? Stephen

I have four of these coaches and have been afraid to touch them as I didn't know how they came apart! I'd love to try converting them to the old CIE black and orange, perhaps with a white stripe above the windows!

Hopefully the video has helped. Just be careful taking that roof off as the plastic clips can break or worse you crack the roof piece itself. Paul

Great work Paul and you answered a question I had which was how do you get the roof off Lima Coaches. That looks a professional job on the coach re spray and it does not show at all that it has been re sprayed. Cheers Kev

They look great Paul. It seems that there is a lot to know about the Mk. II coaches. I have 1 Lima one and 1 Hornby in Virgin livery and 8 Airfix ones in Inter City. I'll have to look and see if I can find any real differences between them. Regards, David.

Thanks as always David, the differences are small and could be something minute in their appearances. In this case it’s the lack of a central door on the coach that denotes it as being a 2b but their could be other differences too I haven’t yet noticed. Paul

Some very satisfying clicks as that coach went back together. It's always a reassuring sound as now you know it's in the right place. Did NIR not use cantrail stripes on their carriages? Every time I watch one of your videos, I realise just how little I know about the railways over there, so every one is educational for me. It's good to see these old Lima models being re-purposed but I agree with you; I think R-T-R coaches will appear - just a matter of time.👍👌😁

The clicking sounds were indeed satisfying. As to the contrail I found no evidence of them on this livery of coach, whether that was a budgetary constraint or what I just don’t know. Certainly later liveries have carried a contrail marking on them. Paul

@@GalgormHall I suppose I'm used to BR liveries, which usually did carry them. On the few photos I've seen of this livery, there's no sign of any. Anything that simplifies the painting or decals has to be a good thing though. Lining can be such a pain to get right and cantrail stripes are usually pretty narrow. Looking forward to you completing the rake.👍👌😁

Hi, This was a very interesting video for me. I'm forever upgrading old stock, particularly old Lima stock. Opening up one of these Mk2 coaches has always been something of a mystery. I now know how to strip them down to their very basic components - thanks for that if nothing else. Did you ever get around to converting the Mk2 Guards Van to the Driving Brake Trailer an (I think that's what it's called? I've looked at the videos on your site but either I've missed it or perhaps it's called something else. Thanks again.

Hi Paul I have followed all in your master class, coaches look well. But when going to buy transfers I find the price for a set is costing almost £40 Unfortunately its at this point my converts have to finish. Points glazing etc were expensive enough but not prepared for the cost of transfers.

Hi Henry they are a tad expensive however the quality of them is superb plus there are enough decals to do a number of coaches which does cut the cost considerably. I reckon when I break down the costs of all materials plus the donar coaches each one comes in at about £30 each for the 5 that I’ve done. In my mind that is still excellent value against an RTR coach. Paul

@@GalgormHall not the 37’s Paul , there were two Lima coaches as a static accommodation by Gary’s water slide . They had wooden ends and completely rusted and no bogies . 👌😎

Hi Paul another great video mate I really enjoyed it every interesting I have conceived lima mk2b coaches in to mk2c coaches as you know for my wcml layout set in the 1980s are you go converted a lima mk2b in to nir grill/bar In the future mate southern pride kits make a 00 kits of br mk2b/c coaches all types for £29 I have seen photos of them I have built there class310 mk2 emu kit it looks really good mate I am have problem with cataracts with my eyes at the moment so I am not working on my mk2c coaches at the moment until I get my eyes worked on paul stay safe and well mate goodbye for now your friend clive

Hi Paul Just found lima intercity coaches I for got I had purchased some time ago two guards and two carrodore. I suppose the transfers would be cut to suit on the guards coach? But gonna give it a go.

Impressive mod to these old Lima coaches to give them a new lease of life in NIR livery. I may at some point give this ago for my Class 201 River Lagon to pull. I think I've met you at one of the UMRC Carrickfergus or Belfast Exhibitions during the early 20-teens?

@Galgorm Hall Yes, IRM from Accura are a sure hit for RTR stock. Though it's mainly Southern at the moment. We need more Northern stuff. I didn't get to order the IRMs NIR or RPSI coaches before out of stock, blast it. Tho I do have the Bachmann Snail sets and MM Cravens to run. Love the Black and Tan livery, but my last loco was the Silver Class A. Now rectified with 2x 121s grey/yellows ordered today.

The Lima coach to look for is the Mk2b 2nd open coach W5449. Alternatively you could wait until the end of the year for Irish Railway Models to produce their NIR coaches. 😉 Paul
