Imagine the Japanese demonic tutor but printed with English characters.. It's the ONLY Japanese art card I like. Rest are meh. I pref English. Good for me price are less. Japanese cards are overhyped.
Well, the first one he turned over was an Elemental Summoning, and he saw the Lesson icon and turned it over and got embarrassed because it wasn't a flip card. So he was saving face after that.
The etched only exist in collector packs. Draft and set boosters have a chance a regular foil and has a guaranteed non foil Mystical Archive. That was a Japanese Tainted Pact you pulled.
@@gachaislyfe31 I know tainted pact had never been reprinted, but tell me where are you getting your pricing because on tcgplayer tutor is more expensive than pact.
For those that want to know what's going on with the pulls. There are MDFC cards in the set, Rudy did miss some, just look at the bottom left of the cards. That symbol in the left corner represents a lesson, the subtle foil is "etched" foil for the mystical archives, the rarity on the Japanese is the stamp on the right side of the card. Love you all, keep posting fun videos my dude.
In regards to the rarity upshifts: Any cards that are standard legal in the Archives (Duress, Village Rites, Shock, etc.) are Uncommons, Any cards that are not are Rare/Mythic (Counterspell, Stone Rain, etc.) and this is because of Arena: All but seven cards in the Archives are legal for use in Historic formats.
its really annoying on arena because it makes it harder to get when i know the rarity of those are lower. its annoying tactic to get players to pay for more packs so they can get the rare and mythic cards so we select which cards we need for the historic decks

It's Animus Divide here Rudy from my YT gaming/tcg unboxing channel! Thank you so much for this box opening! I've been so hyped for this set and those Japanese Archives are sooo 🔥! You made my b-day sir!
@@chrispy6953 While Wishes do strictly nothing in EDH you can actually "learn" by doing the bad looting effect. But yeah... the cards are balanced as tutors, so if you loot they are lame...
So it's like in Harry Potter where they were named after wizards who found them? That seems lazy af. Is there a prodigy kid wizard that fights a bad wizard who kills good wizards too?
@@stepniak18 The plot is literally just HP, Will/Rowan are like if split Harry's soul into two Planeswalkers, then Voldermot(some evil mage card has comp underwhelming play effect imo for what supposed represent in this set) is literally bad guy trying to destroy school so all these typically rival houses in Hogwarts have to band together. Liliana plays the role of Snape too. What I wonder though because they've got license secured for Warhammer 40k cards coming up(NO JOKES), got Toho on board etc so cross promotional content is obviously on WOTC's radar. I'm wondering if they're getting main cards ready, and have their alt art marketing ideas but then like something fell through last minute? There is a card in Ikoria that is DEAD RINGER for a Geralt, The Witcher tie-in alt art, but none exists. (Chevill, Bane of Monsters, now I know I know, Warhammer 2 Total War did a not so subtle character name nod as well, but for a set that had licensed alt-art cards, is not a little weird there is not a Gerald alt art officially of this card UNLESS licensing proved to be an issue?) They make an entire set transparently similar to HP...but maybe Warner Bros backed out last minute or something and they had all the Japanese artists on contract still from Ikoria so pivoted to double down on the Japan edition collectors cards for both their release and NA boxes. I mean...just saying. Anyways. I love Ikoria and Kaldheim, I loved especially how Kaldheim low-key like a Soul's video game taps into the COMPLETE PLOT OF MTG they just kinda left hanging since New Phyrexia, then hear about this set and I just...don't get it...like 2020 MTG tooks five steps forward, then got into sunlight of 2021 out of their cave and panic'd threw up a set belongs like B-role cards of one of the second generation Ravinca block cause afraid power ramp getting too high, or like have impostor syndrome hahahahha That's other thing, beyond being rip of HP like an internal rip off of the Guild Cities stuff...guess the gold etched foils look cool, but ffs a lot those reprints arent valid in standard and I'm sorry but unless its in phyrexian I'm not a big fan on having guaranteed one card in my pack printed in my non-native language, and I'm weeb af but this ish' just embarrassing. Why not just make this entire set be a sequel to Kawigama? and like these are japense style dojo's instead, go with Japanese theme for entire set, but collectible cards printed in Japanese of a harry potter knock off set? I just don't get it.
@@vegas_party_animal7737 They're literally the exact same. They've never had the name of the card in the bottom left corner. MDFCs show what type of spell is on the back of the card and it's cost.

Each collector's pack contains 2 etched foil mystical archives cards. One will be uncommon, the other will be either rare or mythic. One will be English and the other will be Japanese. Each pack also contains a traditional foil mystical archive card. The language will be random, it will always be an uncommon. 48% of packs will contain a traditional foil mystical archive card. The language will be random. It will be either rare or mythical rare. These cards have the highest rarity. Don't be tricked into buying the etched foil rares and mythics thinking they are more rare than the traditional foils.
@@noahcooper6979 Each Japanese regular booster and set booster has 1 random Japanese mythical archive card. I don't know if there are Japanese collector's boosters.
Draft booster: You get 1-2 mystical archive, and it could be foil (no etched foil) Set booster: Same as Draft booster CE: You get the japanese archive cards, you can get etched foils on those cards. So yes, Japanese archive cards, and etched foils are ONLY CEs. Mystical archives feel kinda like a list card, which is kinda cool
@@itsmichelebro777 I have zero self control. I just want to open it. Like when he does a video and has a box of old magic I don't even want to buy it or steal it I just want to open it and see what cards are inside
I have opened one and have another coming to me on Friday. I always planned on getting 2, one to open and one to keep. I don't think I can resist opening the 2nd one.
Interesting perspective on the etched foils. So far prices seem to be lower for etched foils than normal on mystical archive cards, and in some cases even lower than non-foil. Having seen Flesh and Blood cold foils and how badly those read on camera, I actually ordered a couple of the Japanese ones with the nicest art, because I think once people see these in person the price is going to go up quite a bit.
They are slowly molding us so that they can return to Kamigawa sometime in the near future and to prevent a repeat of the consumer perspective from what happened during the original Kamigawa block that was released in 2005-2006. Tetsuko Umezawa, Fugitive from Dominaria, ninjutsu mechanics re-introduce in MH1, and now JP artwork.
Rudy! Please flip the double sided cards!!! The ones with the triangle symbol top-left is a double sided card. 1:35 4:33 4:59 10:27 11:50 The other symbol you saw on the first card at 1:15 is the symbol for a lesson cards.
@@brokengames9020 The Broken Games Mantra: "I feed the algorithms daily (Of the corporations I claim to hate) So I can read back my copypasta And sob and masturbate."
The situation is pretty much the same as previous expansions : - You can only get regular foils and cards that have a special alternative art in regular draft booster packs. - Japanese cards, 'extended' zoomed in full arts and those etched foils can only be in collector boosters.
I realized watching your video that the symbol top left on some cards seems to show that they are lesson cards. :) Rudy helped me learn something new. stay safe everyone and keep spreading the magic
The bottom of all newer cards (including the Japanese cards) have codes for rarity: T : Token L : basic land (including basic snow) C : Common U : Uncommon R : Rare M : Mythic S : Special (used “B : Bonus list” initially but changed to S) P : Promo F : (Only ones I know of are the stand in cards for MDFC. My guess is “Flip” but I don’t know for sure)
Taco King Rudy, these Collector boxes are Legit. My one collector box, I opened 3, THREE, demonic tutor, one alt art foil leaf, 1 Japanese cold foil, and one full foil alt Japanese art. Not to mention, the Full foil Japanese art Teferi's protection, Faithless looting, dark ritual, and Eliminate. Those are some really pricy items on the current market, TCG.
Rudy the symbol in the top left corner indicates either Modal Double Faced or Lesson, the triangular arrow being the double face symbol. As for the Mystical Archives, you get 1 per pack with a rare 26.4% or mythic 6.6% of the time and you can also get a foil version replacing a common in the foil slot. You can only get the Japanese variants in Collector or Japanese products, and the foil etched only appear in the Collector product.
The circle in the corner is connected to the learn mechanic. All learn cards should in the sideboard so when you cast a card with learn you can bring in a learn card of your choice in from your sideboard into your hand
At 13:16 Rudy discovers the "Rudy the Cat" card, but doesn't know how to read Japanese, so doesn't get it! LOL! And he thought WotC just ignores him all the time!
So only the Collectors boxes have the etched foils and Japanese cards. That symbol is a lesson card and the first extended art is always a Commander 2021 (C21).
I'm pretty sure they moved a bunch of stuff to rare/mythic in mystical archives due to MTG: Arena. People have been mentioning they've got an entire collection of all the commons/uncommons but are missing a bunch of the rares/mythics on arena.
Not bad pulls better then what I got from a set booster box that I got from my LGS I did get 9 mythics that include a Foil Etched Natural Order & Day of Judgement & a Kozilek, Butcher of Truth from the list. The best part is I got it for only $73.00 USD tax included as I had some store credit. At least I came out ahead so thats good.
Dear Rudy-Bear, I guess a lot of people were saying this before or you figured out by yourself. The foil etching is exclusive for collectors. Set and draft boosters only have the normal versions of the global mystical archives + Chance of full foil version (not jpn style). Japanese style only in japanese boxes and global collectors. The mystical archive cards are seperated in rarety U/R/M. Thats why Stone rain counts as rare. Collectors: always 1 U global + 1 R/M japanese archive OR 1 U japanese + 1 R/M global archive per booster (etched foil) + 1 U global OR japanese full foil in every booster. The last card of booster can be anything R/M > only Chance to get demonic Tutor full foil japanese in non japanese boxes.
Japanese alt arts (foil and etched) are only in the collectors boxes. Etched mystical archives are also only in collectors boxes. Draft boosters and set boosters only have regular mystical archives.
The etched foils are only in collectors boosters. Japanese are only in collectors boosters or Japanese packs. Each collectors booster has 4 mystical archives.
@@brokengames9020 The Broken Games Mantra: "I feed the algorithms daily (Of the corporations I claim to hate) So I can read back my copypasta And sob and masturbate."
The English mystical archives come etched in normal and set boosters as well with a chance to get fully foiled. The Japanese alternate arts are only available in Japanese boxes and the English Collector boxes.
In draft and set booster you can only have regular english mystical archives, as what I saw so far. Collectors have 3 slots for mystical archives and can have a forth one in the last slot. Also, I think every mystical archives are foil or etched foil in the collector booster. May have to double check this info.
just a note: the rarities on the mystical archives are there to balance limited formats. as always the rares and mythics show up less than the uncommons and commons. turns out bolt at common isn't exactly great for limited.
I love that with Zaffai this set is shipping with a card that WotC will have to put out updated rules for immediately, or have half the card not work. 11/10 QC
6 packs through and Rudy's volatile relationship just took a seat haha. He was impressed by pack 1. You know he feels fresh organizing those piles. Well done, strixhaven. Thanks, Rudy the bear, for not trying to claim on any individual card value. This video was ideally what he said it would be
I only collect Pokémon, and I've watched Rudys Magic openings for years now. I've heard Rudy mention all kinds of chalupas like the Snappies, Demonic Tutors, all kinds of Lava Reacharounds. Usually I have his rambling on in the background, and the cards look okay/cool when I hover over to the screen.......... BUT DAMN THESE ARE BREATHTAKING...! Here I was thinking that Pokémon really stepped up their game with the recent Alternate Arts.... Those Japanese cards... OMG I WANT THEM. (And I know nothing of Magic apart from the very basics hahaha) I always hear Rudy about investing in this, investing in that.. I have no clue, but this is something I'd jump on if I didn't just order an ungodly amount of Pokémon from Japan xD
11:00 - Rudy casually opens Japanese Swords to Plowshares and doesn't even realize it. And to answer Rudy's question; the Japanese Alternate Art Mystical Archive cards appear in Japanese Draft/Set Boosters at a 50% rate in place of the slot reserved for the Mystical Archive card. They DO NOT appear at all in the English Draft/Set boosters. English Collectors Boosters are the ONLY product USA which contains them. My guess is WoTC saw how successful the Japanese Art WAR planeswalkers were and pushed for more Japanese artist collaborations.
I would like some stability for a few years. Every set thats released has newer and crazier flashy cards. Just calm it down and have some stability please! Collecting sets has become impossible
Christ on a cracker, the mystical archive cards were ALREADY amazing looking, but seeing how they changed the etched foiling actually makes me want to pick those up now as well. I was just gonna skip them because the etched foils in Commander Legends looked so bad, but these... these lookin freakin awesome. I don't even buy normal foils, for all the normal reasons. This is the first time in a LONG time where I'm looking at getting cards just for collection purposes because they look SO damn good. The WotC money machine definitely knows how to keep pullin' my levers I guess :p
You can get regular foil English mystical archives in draft (1 per box) & set (3 per box) English boxes, but not etched foil or Japanese mystical archives.
Yeah, Demonic Tutor is currently the best hit. I pulled the Japanese Foil one and it goes well with the Japanese Foil Brainstorm and Duress, etched Japanese Natural Order, and Extended art foil Professor Onyx.
Can you explain me why having one of the best looking colections in full art more afordable is worst than an artificial scarce exclusive product? Dead serious, i have seen coments like this and i cant understand why some prefer having less good things
@@ignalol the logic is when everything is special nothing feel special. It's like dead hard grindy old mmo rpg, nothing is easy and yet people had more fun than with the streamlined convenient new "upgrade". I don't think it's either worst or better but I get the 2 positions on the issue.
It's relative. Lottery cards are now foil jp Demonic Tutor, foil phyrexian Vorinclex or foil old frame Thoughtseize. Still I feel you, I don't like seeing 90% of a booster being foil...
Ooooooohhhhhh, skipped timespiral altogether and go strait to strixhaven. That’s a very good sign for my 8 timespiral boxes. Rudesters my gage to seeing how rare timespiral remastered is. The fact that my man still haven’t done 1 box opening for it makes me very very happy.
Cracked a couple, full art commander cards are nice. The mystical archives come in edge foil edge and none edge out of the regular draft and set boosters
Finally got my hands on 2 packs and my God the card quality is so so much better than normal cards idk if this is only for collectors boosters but you can tell its quality prints and materials. Made me order a whole box just for the quality of cards and art
Rudy immediately identified the problem with Body of Knowledge, it's missing evasion. He might know Mugic the Yuglioing anyways, I am impressed. Plus, the issue with the upshifted rarities on the mystical archives...
Literally 6 minutes into this video, I open up an ebay tab because I'm ready to buy myself this box... Little did I know that these would be going for like $50 for a single 15-card pack, and big bucks for this box you opened here. I thought this was going to be my introduction into Magic the Gathering -- I've already invested a little bit into 13 other TCGs, and have yet to jump into Magic... This really could have been it, but the price just isn't doing it for me. That's really too bad. Thanks for sharing the opening. These cards are actually beautiful AF.
It looks like the mystical archive cards, in the Draft boosters - are not gold etched. Haven't opened any Set boosters yet, but Collector boosters may be the only place you can find those! @7:40
Exceptional Growth works like this if you have a 4/4 creature out on the field. Then you pay 2 mana, 2 mana and two green. Then x would be 4 then times that by the power of your creature. So then your creature would be 16 power until end of turn. 💯
Rarities are for limited since one is in every draft pack and can be used. Also there is one MA in every set booster. You can only get full foil of the MA cards in set and draft pack though and none will be JA.
The Japanese Mythic Archives are only in Collectors Boosters and Japanese Draft and Set Boosters. Unsure about the foiling, but the etched may be collector booster exclusive (or so rare in other boosters as to basically be exclusive)
My Elsha, Magic Martial Arts deck requires: Leonin Lightscribe, Clever Lumimancer, Veyran, Voice of Duality, and the new land cycles. Man I cant wait to get those added to the deck! So excited!
Never got a collector booster before so I picked up two packs. First was a dud, but I was blessed with a japanese demonic tutor with foil etching. Never had I been this lucky at a pull
