Update: The Celestrone 127 SLT was sent back due to quality concerns, but eventually got the William Optics GT71 triplet refractor telescope instead.
Hallow’s Eve night of frustration rings in my very first telescope, the Celestron Nexstar 127 SLT, 5”, Mak-Cass telescope. An hours worth of nothingness to show but me being agitated as my cheap dot sight finder scopes, which were aligned on distant targets in the daytime, couldn’t get near the planets, even in prime focus with no secondary optics used and with using the diagonal and the wide field of view 25mm eyepiece.
Besides the aggravating waste of an hour, I’m not very happy with the quality of this telescope bundle which has a very lightweight cheap tripod, and only having an 8 pound load capacity for the mount (when the telescope tube itself is already around 8 pounds without accessories attached). The icing on the cake for me is the quality of the optics. I'm not sure if something was damaged in shipping but one of the inside boxes was crushed when I received it. During the daytime when filming distant objects, the clarity wasn't very good compared to my telephoto lenses, so maybe something got messed up during production or shipping.
Anyway! Jupiter, Saturn and the Full Moon, (along with many dust specks), on this Halloween night.

My dad has this scope and it isn’t soft like this. There is something not right here. The only issue he has with it is the wobble when touching the scope but this can be reduced with vibration pads and better eye pieces and a Barlow lens to increase the distance between your eye and the lens.

@Jayling 3 года назад
Arty, I don't know very much about telescopes but went with the mak-cass after doing tons of research and had to opt for something lighter than the 6-8", but like I said the quality wasn't that great so back it's going. I may be getting a smaller William Optics GT71 triplet refractor. It's lighter and smaller and may fill the hole I have for that 400mm range. Hopefully that one works out better. :) www.highpointscientific.com/telescopes/refracting-telescopes/william-optics-gt71-f-5-9-gold-triplet-apo-refractor-w-flattener-and-dual-side-dovetail-a-f71gtii-ap

@@Jayling gosh this seems like a fancy expensive one.. i got my 6 in (150mm) reflector with equatorial mount for about $400 and quality or resolution of the image depends on the size of mirror/lens so the bigger the clearer.. for good observation atleast 6in is a good choice.. try celestron, meade, gso, explore scientific, vixen, orion etc.. these are good professional telescopes.. others just might be giving low quality glasses and taking money for the design and other things like for showpiece.. anyway choice is yours just a suggestion

the images quality of this scope just remind me of my first "department store" telescope, where it couldn't get a good focus of jupiter. the planet of jupiter appeared to be a bright dot oscillating as sine wave on an o-scope when tried to focus; & a mild gut of wind would have knocked it down when left unattended. i've always wanted to get a schmidt cassegrain telescope or its variants, but was very happy to get a very good optic refractor with a rock solid german equatorial mount instead. thanks for sharing a great video.

Don't blame the scope, she doesn't know what she's doing. The 127 Nexstar SLT is not an astrophotography scope on that mount, it is for observation only. If she wanted to put a camera on it she should have got the 102 Maksutov that weighs half the 127.

I also bought the 127 SLT and had problems. The controller had a connection error and couldn't see the computer. After research, I found I could use the Aux port and that worked. But this is a new telescope and I expect it to work right. Also, couldn't get the lens cap back on the 25 mm lens. The rubber spread out. I returned the scope and ordered another one. The electronics worked good. The screw to tighten the scope to the mount I tightened it as much I could and the telescope was still loose in the mount. I worked the screw back and forth and eventually got the scope tight in the mount. I since used WD-40 on that entire mechanism and it works good now. I share your emotion and think Celestron could have better quality. They need Quality Control. You did a great job on your video.

The plastic RDFs aren’t the best but you can make them work. Not sure if you’ve had a chance to precisely line up the RDF field with that in the telescope? I always do this during the day and tighten down the screws before trying to use a Mak, otherwise as you experienced its incredibly difficult to find anything. Assuming it’s lined up i first locate the object with the lowest power eyepiece and then put the Barlow and camera on afterwards otherwise again you can waste a lot of time.

Months and months late to the party on this vid and a recent subscriber, love your vids, keep 'em coming! So few channels are so personable. While you've sent the Celestron back and since gotten a brilliant 'lil Williams Optics refractor shown in other vids, I'd like to share some tips for anyone thinking of a Maksutov - Cassegrain of their own. The Mak-Cass is a first-class lunar and planetary scope once it has had time to cool down to ambient temperature. The long focal length and narrow field of view are well suited to the task. Pop in an eyepiece or eyepiece/barlow lens and go for it. For imaging, the design is also very forgiving for backfocus in the inward-travel of the focuser sense of the term. I have the same mount as you, a SkyWatcher AZ-GTi and opted for the smaller 102mm Skywatcher Mak. The AZ-GTi's max payload is rated at 11 lbs which is fine for visual (the SW 127 Mak similar to the Celestron is 9.7 lbs). However if imaging you'll have the weight of the scope, barlow (potentially), focuser adapter, T-ring and the camera. If using any external screens and mounting brackets, these need to be factored in as well and it all adds up. The SW 102mm Mak weighs in at 4.7 lbs - with my mirrorless camera, T-ring and adapter the total weight the mount has to move is just under 5.5 lbs. 50% of the mounts capacity allows less stress on the motors and fewer tracking errors and balance is easier. Same with any other small scope on the mount - fast 50-80mm refractors also do pretty well if you keep things simple. Hope this helps someone out!

Great video Jayling, I think from what I have been revising the refractor telescope is the one for astrophotography , I have never really had any good results from a newtonian mirrored telescope personally speaking but maybe I am doing something wrong but then I viewed this video and it bought back memories of the image quality I used to get from a newtonian mirrored telescope, I had much higher quality coming from my camera and lens combo and still do, unless your will to pay thousand upon thousands on refractor telescopes and dedicated astro cameras as well as good trackers and goto tripods to hold that weight also filters to go with it all then I would stick to what you got because going down that rabbit hole is costly lol, and you already dipped your toes in the rabbit hole lol. at least you can get your money back and it is a good way to see what works for you and what does not, the nice thing here is you did a good video on this kind of telescope and reminded me why I should not go there as well, so thx for that.

I disagree with you. The scope itself is not 'poorly made', but when you are trying to do something that it's not designed to do, and pushing it way beyond it's capabilities, you're not going to get good results. I can put a $250 Mak-Cass or a $1,000 Mak-Cass on her setup, and I'd still get the same crappy results. As I said in my reply to her, if she had done things differently, and taken into account a number of factors, she could have had some really awesome shots of Saturn and Jupiter using that scope. Just not with her setup. Everything comes down the the weakest link in the chain, and she has several weak links. This isn't unusual for a new person into AP, and unfortunately, it's an expensive hobby and mistakes are costly, but don't blame the scope for being asked to do something in a set up that wasn't designed for what she wanted to do.

Gary, you seem to be flooding my comment section after watching just 2 of my videos and have been making a lot of assumptions and presuming a great deal. I'm not new to filming the sky as my thousand videos over several years show. I do know this particular Celestron Mak-Cass is capable of getting great shots of the planets using barlows just by watching videos and doing tons of research on it through forums. Carolina Sky Astronomy has some fabulous shots of them, but yes, he does use a ccd camera whereas I use a mirrorless dslr, so of course there will be a difference. I've used many telephoto lenses throughout the years and do have a good idea if something is wrong with a lens or not. When testing this telescope during the daytime, like I do all my gear, using prime focus, there was something wrong with the optics - it didn't produce clear, sharp images like it should have. One of the inside boxes it was shipped in was literally crushed, so I don't know if that jostled the mirrors or not, but whatever it was, something was wrong with it. The new telescope, the William Optics GT71 is superior in build quality, in my opinion, and has been producing great shots in prime, and even decent ones when using 4x Kenko teleconverters. Yes, I do push the limits, sometimes extreme, but it's something that I enjoy doing.

@@Jayling wasn't trying to flood your channel, and I apologize. I probably came across like some total jerk (or other word) and that wasn't my intent. I ran into some legal issues a few years ago, and I'm just now starting to recover from it, and astrophotography is one of my burgeoning hobbies. I've lost half my stuff, unfortunately, and I'm going to have to rebuild a lot of that, but I see others and I want to 'help.' I realize that I was way overboard, and that was no help at all. I hope you haven't sent the telescope back. I have this from Orion. I bought the GoTo version which tracks the object once you find it. For the red dot finder to work you align it during the day. Sight the telescope on an object about a 1/4 mile away and center it. Then adjust the red dot find so the object is centered in it. Once you do that then whatever you point at will most likely bring the target into your field of view. The dust you get rid of by taking flats and the stacking software removes the dust and lint. I have been pleased by the optical quality so I think it was just the viewing conditions and the mount, not the scope. I was amazed that you are already adept with the post processing software.

@@Jayling Frustration, as I've said, comes from lack of education. It IS frustrating if you don't have anyone to guide and teach you, which is why you want to find as many videos and channels here on RU-vid to help you learn. It's a long process, and one that will take some time to wrap your head around. You need the right equipment. You need the knowledge of WHY you need a certain piece of gear. You need to knowledge of how best to use that gear, and what it can, and can't do. You need to have knowledge of software, since you want to capture images. Not only software to process the images, which is the LAST thing you're worried about, but software on HOW to GET the images in the first place. You need to have knowledge about where and how to set up your gear and why. AP is NOT easy and anyone who tells you it is is an idiot, or has never tried it. Too many people like us, you and me, photographers, wanted to get into this, and bought stuff that we had no clue about, and it was all wrong for what we wanted to do. Like I said to someone else in this thread, go check out CloudyNights.com A great site with people who will teach you what you need to know to get great shots. There wasn't anything wrong with the scope you bought, it would have made a fine little addition to your collection, but as a first scope, it was a poor choice.

Hi Jay, nice vid. I was thinking since you only used to tube on his telescope set up most of the money it cost it went to waste. as a photographer used to the clarity of the camera lenses you would probably appreciate the qualities of a good refractor much better and since the SLT set up is close to 600 dollars may be something like a SVBONY SV550 a triplet refractor would give you the images you might like at a decent price

Hi Jayling, this is the second video of yours I've watched, the first was with the WO 71GT. Let's think about what happened here. You have an f/12 telescope, and you put a 2.5X barlow on it? Congrats, you've just increased the f/ratio to f/30! On my previously mentioned Sony A77, Saturn and her moons are just a tiny dot in the center of the image, even using a 3x barlow/magnifier. By the way, does the RA allow you to actually capture at 3, 5, or 10X zoom? Obviously, it's just cropping to that portion of the sensor, but I'm curious. Mak-Cass's are nice for some stuff, but again, you need to match the scope to the target, and the sensor to the scope and the target. For instance, a QHY5III462, which is a Planetary/Guide camera would offer a great shot. www.highpointscientific.com/qhy-qhy5iii462-planetary-color-and-nir-cmos-imaging-camera-expansion-kit-qhy5iii462c-exp Okay, it's ONLY a 2.1MP camera, but it does it's designed job really well. You'll still get 1920x1080 resolution out of it. Not great for on the wall over your sofa, but on your computer screen it should look awesome. You can crop your RA camera down to that 2.1MP size, and you should be able to fill the screen pretty well had you kept the 127 SLT. The scope itself isn't bad. Couple of other things. Seeing. This is the condition of the sky, temperature, air mass, at what angle you're shooting at. For instance, I'm on the west coast, in Washington State, and at 6:30 p.m. here, Jupiter is only about 15º above the horizon and descending. So, that puts it into all the heat coming off the planet, winds, etc. Plus, on the mount (which I described in my first post to you), it's not a very solid mount (but, you're right, far better than the one that comes from Celestron). Still limited to 11 pounds, or about 6 pounds payload for AP. The scope is probably 3.5 pounds alone, and the camera and all the gear you have on it, is easily another 4 pounds, so you're probably over the 'best' weight for AP on that Sky-Watcher mount. I suspect that you might have been happy with the scope if: It was on a better mount, You used an appropriate Planetary Camera You waited until your target was at least 35-40º in elevation You didn't use a 2.5x PowerMate, which really isn't designed for this type of AP. See my other post for recommendations on mounts and telescopes, and why astrophotographers are like regular photographers, tons of telescopes like tons of lenses. Each for a specific task or duty. There is no 'zoom lens' for astrophotography, at least not if you want to do it correctly.

The telescope native focal length is almost 60 inches. With the powermate, it's 150 inches. That's over 3800 MM focal length. I'm not surprised you had issues centering objects. You can get what is called a "flip mirror". It installs between the telescope and camera. It has a movable mirror that reflects up to an eyepiece that has a larger field of view. Once you center the object manually, you flip the mirror down.
@Jayling
@Jayling 3 года назад
When I had it in prime trying to center the planet it was only at 1500mm so that should've been doable but still it took a full 30 minutes to eventually find. With the camera/lens I use that's 1600mm, and with the cheap red dot finder on the camera I can still find the planets pretty quickly. I used both sights but it was a frustrating experience. Anyway, as I already mentioned, it's being sent back. I did expect better clarity but even during the daytime filming on distant objects, they didn't come out as clear as the camera/lenses do, so I don't know if the optics got screwed up during shipping or not, one of the inside boxes was crushed when I got it.

Nice scope Jayling congrats! The dust is in camera sensor, not in telescope. Clear Skies.

Hiya Dinos. The camera's sensor is clean and dust-free, there must be something on the optics/mirrors inside the enclosed scope. Anyway, it's going back, this was too frustrating and time-consuming. :)

@@Jayling The dust is visible only with big magnification if is close to sensor. The dust in telescope mirrors is not visible. When I have such a problem, I never clean the telescope but only the sensor from the camera. In dslr camera pass dust more easily because you change the lens constantly, so the sensor is more exposed to dust.

The William Optics GT71 refractor telescope. I have 5 videos up of it from back in 2021: ru-vid.comsearch?query=William%20Optics

Hi, I'm very interested if we're can with math and a telescope the distance to moon to calculate? My idea the has a width and zoom is a factor and if i zoom in i can calculate the distance. 🤔😁 best regards from Germany

awesome my friend.not sure if my camera can fit on the Telescope :-)

Hiya Thomas! I don't think the P1000 can since the adapter is for removable lenses, but then you already have a telescope in the zooming maniac of the P1000. :)

Finally. Congrats. You might need a finderscope and want to invest in an ASIAir Pro and go wireless it also does the auto-stacking. Just got one of those and still getting a handle of it but quite worth it. It’s sure an expensive hobby.

Yeah, this hobby is extremely expensive. I wasn't fond of the quality or clarity nor the weight, so back it's going. It was still cool to try though. Clear skies to you. :)

@@Jayling for telescopes, you at least want to go for an 8” minimum and a decent finderscope. The set up you had does not guarantee a quality shot or outstanding clarity. It’s like a canon EOS VS a canon power shot.

You may not realize this but I'm unable to handle anything bigger. This ota at 8 pounds was even too heavy for me so that's why I opted for the 5" models, but even I continue down this telescope route it'll end up being even smaller. I should probably just stick with what I know I can handle and that's a camera/lens combo. We'll see though as I'm checking out the smaller tubes right now.

@@Jayling gotcha. The telescope tech has not evolved in the past 10 years. Too many parts, unnecessarily expensive, lack of innovation. Auto guiding, polar alignment, better focus options should all be built in and set with a push of a button. That shouldn’t require extra parts and software. Only if a company like space x can get in the telescope business that would be great. Celestron and Meade are pretty outdated for my liking.
