I started using your Budget by Paycheck method in November. Boy am I glad I did! I lost my job last week. Instead of panic, I felt a calm because I have enough saved to give me some time to find a job that's a great fit for me. Thank you, Miko!!!

My husband and I started our journey a few months ago after purchasing your budget planner workbook and envelopes. We are making great guns! Embarrassingly in the process of actually tracking our spending we found we were still paying house insurance on a home we sold over 5 years ago...5 YEARS ago. Thankfully the bank we bank with is going to repay the money..that’s $120 a month over more than 5 years. So from the bottom of our hearts, thank you for making a huge difference in the lives of people who find you!

I was a cash spender but did not do anything actually official spotted your channel for envelopes and joined you email course and changed my financial planning. Started Jan 1st just to get used to it. 27th is pay day which is for month Feb. all envelopes stuffed and will transfer savings on the 1st. without the official cash on envelope budget in 2 years I save nearly £20,000 and I'm purchasing an flat (apartment) which should finalise end of the month. my life has changed for the better feel more secure financially than ever before. I have my sinking funds for a holiday abroad the last was 15 years ago and a new pair of glasses which was 3-4 years ago (eyesight not changed much just wanted a new style of glasses). thank you for everything.

Question: Is it double counting if you include that you saved for sinking funds, but then also that you spent from sinking funds? I love numbers/book-keeping, but for some reason I am having a hard time sorting this one out. And if in January, for example you put $2k of your income into a sinking fund, but then in October you put it back into your income column to spend it... is that counting the same income twice? I want to make sure I understand this part of your system/style so I dont realize a few months in that Ive been calculating or tracking wrong. Starting with the box set in January 2023 and taking my kids along as a math class.

Yes, my credit union allows me to :-)
@kevinbergen7746
@kevinbergen7746 4 года назад
@@jenniesgenuinegems Not only does Ally let you open multiple savings/money market/checking accounts with no maintenance fees, they have started rolling out "buckets" within their savings accounts. Buckets are effectively envelopes, and you currently can have up to 10 buckets per account. For example, you can have a "Personal" savings account with buckets for your emergency fund, kids, pets, gifts, and vacation; a "College" savings account with buckets for tuition, room & board, and books; and a "Business" savings account with buckets for payroll, taxes, insurance, and supplies.
@kevinbergen7746
@kevinbergen7746 4 года назад
You can have multiple accounts with most institutions. However, you need to be wary of maintenance fees and the conditions surrounding them. Major brick & mortar banks often require a qualifying direct deposit of a certain amount per month (e.g., a single deposit of $250) or a certain minimum daily balance (often $1,500) to avoid a monthly maintenance fee (often $12). Generally speaking, Credit Unions are less likely to have maintenance fees associated with their accounts. Sometimes they will give you a higher interest rate if you maintain a certain balance, or make a certain number (typically 10) debit card, or "signature" transactions per month. This is surprisingly easy to cheese if you check out each item in your cart individually, or if you replenish gift cards $1 ten times instead of $10 once. There are tons of online options with no maintenance fees. Wealthfront, Betterment, Ally, Discover, Marcus, and Simple all come to mind off the top of my head. Some online services may have tiered interest rates depending on account balance, but they all should start around 1.6% APY for their high-yield savings option (compared to around .03% for brick & mortar banks).

My husband and I only started our journey a few months ago and trust me my teens were used to getting what they wanted when they wanted. We even affectionately nicknamed them bourgeois babies. But I sat them down and told them how we as parents had gotten it so wrong and asked them to help us change our ways. They even watched a few cash envelop system videos with us. My teenage daughter has become a budget corporal...constantly asking me if I really need that item, comparing prices, etc., and she has started her own envelope system for her part time after school job. I am so glad we did this, now there is a chance they will never face the large amounts of debt that her generation is likely to rack up. I wish my parents had shown me this when I was her age. We were wrong to teach them if you want it you just get it. Everything has a cost!

How do you cut out the guilt of seeing spending on “beauty” for more than 3x what your kid category is? I have such a hard time with seeing total numbers like that and not being able to see it in any other category like the “fun” category or anything else going specifically to him - specially if I’m receiving child support money - Something I struggled with my older kid - always felt like I didn’t want to be like that song : “ was supposed to get tyco with your money, went and got lipo with your money..” lol First world problems ..

I expect by putting a huge chunk of that 31k savings into his college fund instead. Better to make a debt free adult than a 7 year old boasting the latest nike shoes or video games

AND investing in sports , or art, or music classes/programs is part of the stuff I was referring to.. I learned long ago from a Ted Talk or something like it : that whatever you are spending your money on is = to what actually matters to you ... as a matter of fact I think miko says the same thing in her videos ... so I’m just wondering HOW to even the luxuries for ones self with the kids having to feel like they are doing without ..

Hello! Just starting my budgeting/cash system journey. One question that I have (so far I havent come across the answer, sorry if I've missed it!) but.. when you reach a sinking fund goal what do you do with the money? Do you just leave it in the envelope and use the cash when it comes time for a birthday or event.? What about if its something like Disney, that you would be most likely using a debit card to book online? Do you have a specific account you would make a deposit to for that, or add it to your general checking account?
@chiknlittle
@chiknlittle 4 года назад
So with the sinking funds, yes you would keep them in their envelopes until it's time to use them. If it's something you have to book online, I'd make the online purchase using your checking account cushion then deposit the cash from your sinking fund; or you can plan the trip, get exact amounts, then deposit the cash, then book it. That's an option if you don't have a checking account cushion to make the initial purchase. Hope that helps :)

I have a checking account cushion, so my checking account doesn't ever actually hit zero. Your cushion is counted as one of your bills. This also covers if a bill is more than what was budgeted and saves you from overdraft fees. :-)
