I think deerling is a combination of sapling and deer meant to sound like the word darling. Looking on bulbapedia it says the same thing and also yearling referring to its connection with seasons and young age. So I think its pretty clever. If anything fauna and fawn is too obvious.

To be fair in Cofagrigus' case, it doesn't seem easy to design a ghost possessed coffin without having most of the coffin as part of the design. I understand your distaste for it, but based on your logic, you could also say that Yamask is just a mask

Beartic as a sick ice bear would have been a great excuse for an Ice/Poison type Pokémon.

It's so funny because, being French, I adore deerling only for its name ! It's called Vivaldaim (Vivaldi + daim (a kind of deer in French)) in homage to Vivaldi's For Seasons and I always thought this was so clever and cool.

If that's any comfort, Deerling has a very fun name in French, Vivaldaim, based on Vivaldi for the season theming and Daim which is French for fawn, there is still hope for this cutie

One of the great things about pokemon is that most, if not ALL pokemon have some sort of appeal in the eyes of fans. One trainer's trash is another trainer's treasure. But i will say your opinion on Deerling being solely based on its name is fine, if you weren't somewhat incorrect its naming scheme. I believe its name is a cross between Deer and Yearling, the latter of which is a term used to describe young things, both for bovines and trees.

If there are ones on this list that I strongly disagree with, they are Primarina, Cinderace & Inteleon, Delphox, and Spectrier. There's also a good number of other Pokemon here that I think are fine, even if they're not my favorites. Also weird how you mentioned that Gurdurr is literally named after the thing it carries but didn't mention Timburr, which is the same deal.

I always thought Barbaracle's design was based off the Eyerock boss from Mario 64

Get why you don't like Primarina but I love just the evolution of just how a sea lion goes from a clown to a pop idol to an opera singer. It just works.

You know, I actually like Basculin’s design. As far as base fish Pokémon go (Magikarp, Goldeen, Arrowkuda, etc.) it looks really good! Sure the lack of an evolution subtracts a lot, but looking at what it is and not what it could’ve been, I really like how they did it

my least favorite pokémon is alolan golem. they gave some of the coolest typings and abilities to a pokémon that looks like if you gave pubic hair to a 5 year old’s drawing of a rock monster also, those three weird rock things on the top of its head don’t look like anything meaningful. it looks the stone incarnation of the absolute value of 0 lmao

In my opinion of Delfox. If the ear hair was taken out and replaced with a muffler/scarf, it could've been a "Coy Witch" motif. If she had an on and off fire hat with only a little ear fluff, then we have a better "Fire Witch".

I had never seen Eiscue before I watched this video. I can see why someone wouldn't have it as a number one and I can see why someone would love it. But as far as a Pokemon design goes in my opinion? This has to be the absolute single laziest design I've seen. They took the head of Pecola, made it icy blue, took all Pingu and did same thing to that head, then stuck them together with pipe cleaners. If you ever feel bad about your art, like it's not improving or unsure that you should keep going, remember, the designer of Eiscue is getting away with Visual Pokecide and getting paid for it. But moreover for sure, I believe in you mother f*****!! Get out there and show em' how this s**** done!!!

Your opinion is fine, however I love that they gave us something OTHER than another fire fighter starter for gen 6. Plus Delphox is based on a witch, at least I like to think so, and she's absolutely glorious. Primarina is an elegant mermaid queen. Both were starters I chose and they never once let me down. (it took me way too long to reset gen 6 to get that 12% female fox. fjsflsjkdksldashjdnjak) I believe it was 23 resets? plus sitting through the intro cut scene each time.

My favorite starter is primarina and I’m happy that it’s not lower on the list

-Primarina is one of my favorite starter final evolutions. -I'm indifferent towards Beartic. It's actually Cubchoo that I don't like. That giant ball of snot is just gross. -I think most people will agree with you on Sunflora. -I agree about Incineroar. It's overrated. At least it's useful in competitive play, though. -Oh, Basculin. Screw Basculin! Forget Pokémon based on objects; THIS is what "out of ideas" looks like. -Delphox is indeed ugly. Fennekin and Braixen are my favorite starters ever, but I prefer to keep them as they are. I might breed an extra to evolve all the way just for the Pokedex data, but that's it. -Agree on Barbaracle The rest of the Pokémon, I'm generally indifferent towards.

Personally I love primarina, all the other aloan starters + all of the kalos starters and inteleon

1:00 They missed the opportunity for Deerling to have a different type for each form as well. Same logic with bad names could be for Seel, Krabby etc

When I played Pokemon X upon release, I chose Fennekin, and purposefully restarted until I got a female, for that was the first and only time I nicknamed a Pokemon/starter (that wasn't meant to trade). I nicknamed her Angel, and in doing so, it helped me through the recent disappearance of my cat Angel (yeah, I know, Fennekin is a fox, not a cat). I still have that file and my Delphox still holds a special place to me.

I will say, as someone who enjoyed Fennekin's design and was excited to see what it evolved into when playing Y when it first came out, Delphox was a huge letdown in the design department. Its colors become so drab and drain the life out of a pokemon that was bright and well colored.

I think Muk and Grimer are tied for my least favorite Pokémon ever. Because they are just everything wrong with Pokemon design rolled into one. They're just inanimate objects (literal piles of sludge) with faces on them, the evolved form is just a bigger version of it's previous evolution, they're ugly as sin to look at, and their name is literally the thing they're based off of. There is one more reason, but it's a super subjective one: it makes me genuinely angry when people point to Trubbish and Garbodor as examples of how Pokemon designs are getting worse over time, when at least Trubbish and Garbodor have decent names and effort put into their designs, meanwhile Grimer and Muk gave been around since Gen 1 and are somehow exempt from criticism because they were part of the original 151. I want to set them on fire everytime I see them, because they are the UGLIEST, LAZIEST, LEAST CREATIVE, Pokemon ever conceived, and the fact that no one else seems to realize this drives me crazy! I mean, this comparison to Trubbish and Garbodor is so irritating that it's actually made me kinda like the living trash bags because of it.

I felt with the Ahola starts they should have made female and male final versions. Felt like it was a missed opportunity then again my male siren baby is fabulous

I wanted Inteleon to be a William Shakespeare pokemon! When I first saw Sobble in the Gen 8 trailer, I thought Sobble = Sob = Tragedy = Plays = William Shakespeare! Not only it would that work with the British theme but imagining it attacking with a quill? Missed opportunity!

I was so indignant when I first saw Eiscue. I just kept yelling, "It's just a penguin with an ice cube on its head!" And the ice cube doesn't even stay there all time! It is by far my least favourite Pokémon.

An interesting thing about incineroar is that since he’s the heel Pokémon technically he’s the bad guy and thrives off of the hate he gets, even from Pokémon fans. To Heels boos are good, so is incineroar getting the boos on purpose? That’s what makes him a great Pokémon design to me

Before I jump into watching this, I will just say, I fully anticipate Stunfisk taking a prominent spot on this list, just from past experience on this channel, and while I respect that you might not like it, at the same time I am covering the eyes of my Stunfisk plush, that he might not be subjected to this. This is being written under the assumption Stunfisk is indeed on this list, which I find highly probable. I will, however, find it a very pleasant surprise to be proven wrong on this.

Seeing cinderace on the thumnail makes me happy. The gen 8 first stage starters are pretty cool, but I think I would put all the evolution in F tier except Rillaboom, which isn't that much better. What went wrong after the first stages?

I mainly like Cinderace because I have a huge attachment to football as I play it a lot for a competitive team and to have a rabbit football player exist in a Pokémon game is epic and his design is cooler than the others

25: ...never thought much about the simplicity of Deerling's name. I'm OK with it as a species, but wow, yeah, Fawna would've been way cooler. 24: Oh, why you do this to my boy? I mean, at least you're not that hard on it now. I personally like it a lot. Seeing it for the first time made me all the more willing to pick Tepig when B/W came out. 23: Saw this coming a mile away, though not this early on the list. And very pleasantly surprised to see that it's growing on you. It may be a weird flat derp, but it is a _lovable_ weird flat derp. 22: Ehh, I get it's not everyone's favorite, yeah. I've seen some dislike for it before. I'm personally OK with it. 21: Chingling's another one that I've seen a lot of dislike for in the past. I kinda like Chingling's name. I mean, yeah, they're none of my favorites in terms of starters myself, but I do at least like them. 19: I will admit, Grimmsnarl took time to grow on me, but I actually really like it now. 18: ...I can understand not liking Beartic. I'm cool with it, bad pun fully intended, but I agree with it being a little "meh" in terms of design. 17: I dunno, I feel like Sunflora's one of the ones that pulls off the basic thing pretty well. 16: I mean, you make a valid point about the names. I'd chalk it up to Gen 1 weirdness. If Seel and Dewgong were introduced in a later generation, I feel like they'd have gotten more creative names. Then again, as you pointed out, Gen 5 _did_ give us Deerling... Well, in any case, I do like Seel and Dewgong regardless. Even their maddeningly subtle Shiny forms have grown on me quite a bit- they're a lot easier to tell in GO, so finding one and realizing right away it was Shiny, very pleasant experience. 15: Aw, now I like Incineroar. I will admit, I would've been very much OK with an evo that stuck a little more closely to Torracat's look, but neither was I disappointed with Incineroar. 14: I've never had a problem with Hariyama's design, personally. 13: I mean, that's the whole thing- it's supposed to look very similar to a coffin so it can lure in and eat grave robbers, so I'd say they did Cofagrigus very well. 12: I've heard the story, yeah, Basculin was created because they needed more fish, and gave it the second form to create the illusion of variety. I know that, but y'know what? The end result is a kickass fish with largely aesthetic yet cool form differences., and if you get one with Adaptability, you got basically a Water-type nuke that will wreck stuff and be a valuable asset to most any ingame team. Even if it was only thrown in at the last minute because they realized they didn't have a lot of fish, I believe it was Mewtwo who once said "The circumstances of one's birth are irrelevant. It is what you do with the gift of life that determines who you are." 11: Are they literal clothes, though? I always thought it was very loose flaps of skin that they tie together with vines. And yeah, you could argue that it still looks suspiciously close to actual clothing even if it's meant to just be loose flaps of skin or something, but my headcanon about Pokémon that look like they're wearing clothing is that, in the Pokémon world's continuity, those Pokémon's designs are what inspired those articles of clothing in the first place. 10: I'm afraid I have to disagree about Delphox's design. I like how it looks. Just, like, old and wise, experienced, not quite so concerned with the looks yet still comes off like a magical badass... I think they did it well. 9: I mean, each hand, leg, the head, they're an actual Binacle. A Barbaracle is a collective of seven Binacle that make skillful use of a couple of rocks to make themselves _way_ more mobile on land than any Binacle could boast. The design being unsettling on some level is to be expected just by nature, and I know you're far from the only one to feel that way about it, but I personally love it. 8: I will admit, Gurdurr always having a girder with it, might not make the most sense in the world, but it's never been a deal breaker for me. 7: I don't dislike this trio, but your points are well taken. They do look a little too human in their Incarnate Formes 6: I will agree that Crabominable is ugly, but I think that's kinda intentional. It is, after all the abominable snowman. Abominable. Ugly. I'd consider that part of the package deal. But yeah- I've always said of Crabominable, all it needs is a better haircut and a buttload more Speed, and it'd be friggin' beloved. 5: I love the Klink line because of the simplicity behind how it progresses. Goes from two small gears, to two small gears and a larger gear, and then the final evo adds another gear and that spiky metal ring deal... I dunno, it's simple, and so are the names, but I feel like there's a certain charm to that, personally. 4: I think the ice cube head is what's meant to make it stand out from real penguins. I'm cool with this one, bad pun once again fully intended. 3: I feel like Glastrier and Spectrier are meant mainly to complete Calyrex than to stand alone, though that hasn't stopped me from taking a liking to Spectrier, personally. 2: WHY DOES EVERYONE THINK AMBIPOM IS UGLY!?!? I love this thing! I never saw a problem with the tail hands, and my personal favorite comparison for them is more along the line of "mutated Plusle heads". And yes, I say that while still defending Ambipom's design. 1: ...I'm going to order a Herdier plush just so I can pet it and cry now.
