A recent comment under one of my videos asked about that horrible situation where a fish keeper notices, immediately after a water change, that the fish appear to be under severe stress or are rapidly heading toward death. It's a horrible feeling. What can we do? Here are some tips that might come in handy (but I hope you never have to use them since this is one of the worse situations fish keepers go through).
This one kind of stumped me. I had to give it some thought. What would you do if you noticed fish stress and death immediately after a water change? Comment below. We all learn from each other on this channel!

i never do more than a 25% water change ever.. I have been keeping fish since i was 4 years old and all I could remember since a child was that when i would change my water in percentages higher than 25% my fish would be looking so stressed out & hovering on the bottom of my tanks.. I also lost a lot of fish as a result of "BIG" water changes.. The years & time spent & lost: not including the money investment we put into are beloved water friends... I've learned to NEVER do more than a 25% water change.. Everything is about balance. The time & effort spent to get our tanks balanced out for our fish. Can be washed down the drain with just a water change.. I would only due a "BIG" water change in an absolute emergency.. If you have to do a "BIG" water change, i would spread it out over several days not exceeding 25%...

I get it. My only concern would be if you have nitrates coming out of your tap. If so, then WCs under 50% would not be reducing nitrates and you could get a gradual creeping up of nitrates. Happened to me. I had to do some big WCs to get it back to where I wanted. Otherwise, yes, the 25% method if much less stressful and risky.

Thanks so much for commenting that because my son’s fish aren’t doing well after we changed their water. We even buy Spring water because I live in town and there are too many chemicals, etc. in it. I didn’t know what we were doing wrong until now. We even save 2-3 gallons of the old water to put in with the new.

This is really a serious subject. A lot of times fish are lost.but if you take the time to think about these steps you are giving us you could save their lives... When I do water changes always keep a bucket of the water.. I don't run big tanka so it's not hard to do.. but I think it's a good idea to save some of the original water just in case.. you can throw an air stone in it and transfer the fish quickly if need be! This just happened to me on sunday 😔 I tested with the strip and my pH spiked badly & I'm sure oxygen was depleted because they were gasping on top of water. I panicked I didn't know what to do. I removed them all from the tank and placed them in some leftover tank water I took out. I was in the process of upgrading my tank so I got everything I needed and treated the water & tried to cycle the water so I can add them to the new tank. It took my entire day monday all through the morning till right now. My betta is fine, my 4 harlequin rasbora are fine, but I lost 1 panda Cory out 5. 😢 I was so heartbroken & devastated when I realized I messed up on the water change. I'm new to the hobby and this mistake of mine hit me hard ☹

@@BenOchart i made a huge mistake not knowing what i was doing. I feel horrible. I brought a betta home from the pet shop. I had a bigger tank home waiting for her to be placed in there. I added the additive to take the chlorine out. I put the full plastic container that the betta came in and let the water in the container get to the same temperature. Well after i added the betta she looked good for a few hours and now she's on the bottom not moving. She's barely breathing. I put a heater in with her and some aquarium salt. Nothing changed. She's probably gonna die and i feel really bad. I didn't realize there was so much for me to learn!!!! Ps i filter my home water 3 times. One one the whole house then through a britta

Great topic Ben. I mentioned this on another video you shared: IMHO we should always be preparing our water ahead of time (clean garbage can - clean plastic totes (with lids)). Prep it a day before, dechlor and run an air stone. After we drain our tank water then pump the prepped water back into the tank. This will solve a lot of issues. It’s critical to make sure the cans/totes don’t get contaminated. If you bump into an issue after a change you can use the totes or cans for an emergency home. They come in handy if you ever have a leak too.
@BenOchart
@BenOchart 4 года назад
Good tip. Some can't due to space restrictions (apartment with limited room, etc) but it would certainly provide more control over what you're putting in there. Fortunately over the years I haven't had any issues going tap to tank with a python/aqueon system. Knock on wood.
@matthewmontague1330
@matthewmontague1330 4 года назад
I would say your on track. But the issue I believe he is talking about is what happens after you do the water change. I would suggest filling up a large bin with the tank water your removing so if anything does go wrong you have safe tank water available to house your fish while you fix the problem. If you can fill up two 35 gallon bins you could theoretically empty all the tank water out that went sour during the change and fill it back up with the old tank water and start again hopefully getting it right the second time
@jskoc
@jskoc 4 года назад
Storing them might be difficult but there's almost always room to fill them. You might have to work around them for a day and that can be disruptive. Matthew, I hear you. I guess I'm trying to solve the problem by avoiding it as much as possible...like exercise instead of treatment. I'd say that insuring you have room to prep water should be a consideration in buying a tank. Better to buy a slightly smaller tank so you can prep the water. If you're asking about purely responsive measures then you're on the right track. But if you have a large bin to put them in after, and the space, it seems you could use that same large bin to prep.

Yes. Sound advice. Made the mistake of being complacent, and changed the water in the tanks together the other day. Sorely regretted it, almost half tank casualty. Nowhere and no way to reverse it once it's done.. and failed to notice the distress signals in time when I'm focused on another tank. This is the best advise. We can take time to scrutinise the effects of the water change & there's another tank to turn to when things go bad.

Hi, I had fish tanks for 5 years now (I have 3). I do beweekly WC and last weekend it was the first time I had real crisis in my 120 G with ALL the fish hanging on the top gasping for air. I must say I did WC during the day and all day everything was ok. The lights on my fish tank turned off at 9.00 PM and usually I go to bed at 11.00, this time I was watching something on TV a bit longer and at 12:30 I looked at the fish tank and saw all fish on the top of the tank. I have heavy planted fish tanks, so plants are producing oxygen during the day. I've done everything the same way as I always do it and I'm using RO water. I always add cold tap water that's treated through RO and add minerals to reach the right hardness. I backtracked the steps and measured water parameters immediately but nothing was off. I didn't have a clue what went wrong. I instantly switched on fish tank lights (for plants to start producing oxygen) and set up filter to the max to get gass exchange up and oxygen level higher. I did another 15% WC just in case and fishes calmed down in about 30 min. It defenitely was oxygen, I just don't know how it went down so quickly after 3 hrs the lights were off. I did lose 2 smaller fishes, the rest luckily survived. I'm still not sure what I've done wrong but not going to bed in time and my quick reaction in the middle of the night this time saved my fish :)

There are a few things that you need to look out for. - difference in pH from tap compared to when it's degassed in your tank (mine is a difference of 0.5, but they seem to cope ok with this) - temperature difference from tap to tank. Again, they can cope with a few degrees either way. It doesn't need to be perfect for most fish. -contaminants. I am convinced that most issues with water changes are because of this for one reason or another. -cleaning. Have you also cleaned your tank filter, substrate and hardscape to well and caused a mini-cycle? -plants. you should avoid doing water changes after lights out. The plants are removing oxygen during this time. Kh- have you somehow depleted the buffer and not replaced it well enough? I'm almost certain that you cannot cause harm by overdosing dechlorinator.

As a fish owner for the first time I would have to say. 1. Only take a little bit out of the tank like half of the water. 2. Don’t put cold water when refilling the tank put hot or warm water it helps.3. Only put a couple of drops of conditioner that’s all you need. 4. Make sure you put a bubbler to make sure it’s getting oxygen and set the right temp for you’re goldfish if it’s lower and you’re fish are in shock try turning up the temp a couple of times to make sure it gets warmer not too many though. 5. Try putting some plants like algie plants as well that helps a lot and it gets a lot of health benefits from that too , it also can be you’re water so check you’re water too with a rest kit . That’s all I have for being a first time fish parent and my fish it happy and healthy

Man, I'm super glad you posted this video, because I've had this happen to me twice now, but not back to back. I have a 20 gallon tank with a large "air wall" at the back of the tank. I perform water changes with the tap directly into the tank while vacuuming the gravel. As soon as I finish, I then dechlorinate the water. Twice now, I've had tetras immediately swim to the top gasping and struggling. Despite everything I've done, I always lose them... And yet this doesn't happen every time. I might have to just go back to treating the water in a bucket before adding because I absolutely hate losing fish like this. It breaks my heart. It only happens to my small fish by the way. I have a large angel fish and bristlenose. They're always completely fine. I also have three mollies. They're always completely fine. I wonder if the chlorine in my water is sometimes enough to destroy the gills of my small fish... I don't know enough to understand exactly what is happening unfortunately.

Love the channel Ben! I think it depends on the size of the tank. Nano tanks will have the most dramatic changes in water parameters & will possible experience ammonia spikes if the tank’s bio load is too high from overstocking the tank or possibly a lack of tank maintenance. I’ve seen folks do a water change & stir up the substrate without vacuuming it for awhile & the waste spikes up ammonia. The best practices that you mentioned are critical & ignoring them could be catastrophic. Another tip that could be helpful is when you are vacuuming the substrate to only do 1/2 of the tank instead of the entire tank in one go, this will help keep that good bacteria in the substrate from being sucked out during the vacuum, resulting in spikes in ammonia & nitrites and possibly having to restart the nitrogen cycle. Let’s continue to help the fish keeping hobbyist & learn from each others mistakes! I like the phrase “if I don’t know the answer, let’s find out together”. We are all students & always have room for more knowledge! Cheers!

If you have good tap water and added the right dose of conditioner, look for temperature. Realise that during a big wc your tap can be running for a long time. Specially if your water is heated by a gas boiler it will slowly increase the temp while running. Always check the watertemp a few times both in your tank and direct from the tap. It should not be more then a few degrees F or 1 degree C off from the tankwater.

Just had this happen 😟. After a water change my fish started rolling around and sinking to the bottom. They were breathing very rapidly, but their gills seemed to clamp. One by one they started dying 😥. I looked online for what to do. A site mentioned that if the water you added was significantly hotter than what was previously in the tank, there could be a lack of oxygen. The water I added was significantly hotter. So I emptied about half the water out and replaced it with colder water. That did the trick, and I managed to save the one fish that was still alive!

Fun thing about getting into this hobby I found out: our tap water has tons of ammonia. That's good stuff for people right? Its good to have a empty cycled tank in case this happens you can move fish before they die and diagnose the problem. We use a tank to grow plants, emergency, and as a general new fish quarantine. We have a 3 gallon we use for definitely sick fish (we have frogs, snails and shrimp in the main tanks so we can't use general cure alls usually) its easier to catch a fish that is sick than move all the decorations and catch the shrimp. And more economical to treat 3 gallons vs 30 gallons.

This is one of the reasons I went to a continuous drip water system with the overflow diverted to the garden. The other reason is ease of maintenance. I drip in 2 gallons an hour of well water into a 250 gallon aquarium system. Granted you have to have a good water source and an area to drain to but it is so amazing to have. I have not done an actual water change for years - unless I am lowering the level to catch a particular fish.

I find gasping on top is the easiest to respond to by adding air stone or circulation pump. Water temp in my experience if you go up too fast seems to have more effect than cold too fast, I add ice, or hot water as fast as possible but usually while draining back out, that way you make room for adjustments. The tough situation is when they all group on the bottom and start to lay over,,, now I have lost my best fish during a water change, its a sad way to learn but I pay better attention to fish behavior as water is refilling(sink to tank) only a minute or two of looking away can be the difference between rescued fish, or casualties.... If I see this behavior, first don't panic which I always do, second turn off the water immediately, third if I have no pumps or anything running I immediately run as much as possible that circulates filters or air rates, I also have a large wooden paddle but I immediately start making the fish swim around with and stir the water as much as possible, about 95% of the time I add more water conditioner which I think usually happens to be the main problem sometimes I think it might require more than other times depending on higher water was treated by the city. I usually accomplish all this within 5 minutes and within that time the fish slowly are already coming back to life. But I think most importantly adding a little bit more conditioner getting your biological filtration circulation going and forcing the fish to swim if you have to push them around get your hands in there spook them, and don't give up until they start to appear more normal. It not always easy to spook them in this state but they will move if its not too late. Also one of the key things is to respond as quickly as possible in any fish situation when you even think you noticed something (different or abnormal) if you even think something is not right or just different, you're probably right something is wrong but anyway you look at it it's better to act on a hunch then to weep at the proof. This is something you don't have to have proof to act because you're either saving lives or you're saving lives. Sorry that's really long but I hope that helps somebody.

I think the first step is to calm down,and face the fact that some fish won't make it,step two back step the steps that u did .for my mistake Ik It was risky and I did stop half way to prevent filling the whole tank so the temperature didn't change a lot but I forgot to turn on the heater. Number one rule always finish cleaning ur tank,never do something else in between bc u will forget something.

This video is a bit older but his advice helps! I would like to add that if there isn't enough of your treatment in the water they will start going in shock, which makes them look dead. I was given a different brand of water treatment that didn't tell how much to use, so i used the amount i use for my normal stuff. Turns out it wasn't enough and my fish started reacting weird: flopping over, sinking with heavy breathing and floating to the top gasping for air. I thought it was my air because it wasnt working so i switched it, but this did nothing. I flushed 5 fish and then was later told that they could just be in shock and that i needed to add more treatment... SO IF YOU DIDN'T ADD ENOUGH TREATMENT, ADD MORE AND THEN LEAVE THE FISH ALONE FOR A DAY OR TWO. WAIT TO MAKE SURE THEY ARE ACTUALLY DEAD!!!!!

I've narrowed down the possibilities (for my situation) to this, Osmotic shock - KH of the new water is 1 or 2 points higher Osmotic shock - too much dechlorinator (nothing to do with O2) Contamination - scented hand soap or hand sanitizer Contamination - old water still in hose from previous water change Contamination - sump pump I premix my water in a 30 gallon tub, so Temp and Ph are exact as the water being replaced. Verdict - #1 pick - contamination kills plecos quickly, and other fish not at all, based on real life experience from auto repairs. Verdict - #2 pick - osmotic shock, instant death, from combination of too much dechlorinator and maybe KH being larger in new water by 2 points. I will experiment some more and let you know. thanks.

Good subject. Though I think you missed one thing that could affect the oxygen level as well, which is that some dechlorinators can reduce available oxygen. But an air stone would help with that, but might be a good idea to check the dosing to make sure it's accurate for the tank.

Hi Dave! Yes, I've heard that. I was over-dosing with Safe for years (concerned over ammonia) and did get occasional flashing. Now I'm using the recommended dose and water changes seem to create less stress than before.

I added 40 mL of Prime to a 10 gal tank and that caused a brief but tiny depression in dissolved oxygen levels which rebounded within a few minutes. That's the equivalent of two teaspoons of Safe.

Best way to do it. I've been adding it to the tank as water comes in from the tap, but pre-treating before adding is probably better (and less costly since when you add to the tank you have to dose for the full volume of the tank).

Before doing a water change, set some of the water that the fish is currently in to the side. That way at the first sign of distress the fish can be remove and place back into that original water situation. Back into a safe environment. If your fish happens to die, try reviving it. Sometimes it works. If it doesn’t, sorry for your loss. Good luck!

I recently did a water change on my 55 gallon community tank and all of my 25-30 fish were doing fine except one Molly fish. It was sitting near the bottom and something was clearly wrong. He is currently quarantined with a bit of aquarium salt as I didn't want to over medicate without a good diagnosis. When I backtracked to the water change I recall that this one fish was swimming upstream in my python when the water was refilling. Even though I conditioned the water while refilling, my gut tells me that it swam for a good while through untreated tap water causing issues after the fact. The tank is cycled and parameters are good, and all other fish seem healthy. Just something to be mindful about as that could be an issue if your fish swims upstream in untreated water for a period of refilling your tank. Thanks for the video, as backtracking made me think about it and I believe that I figured out the issue. Hopefully the Molly recovers.

I think I always learning from each other is a good thing. As far as the water change conditioning goes you hit it right on the head with temperature and pH being the two main causes I also when I first started keeping fish I didn't do maintenance the way I should and vacuum and clean my gravel right and when I dump the water in it went in so fast that it started the bottom up and it released ammonia from the decayed food and fish species that was actually trapped on the underside of the substrate which I didn't know could even happen but as long as you're doing good night and it's on your tank that shouldn't really be an issue the swim bladder like you said if you put in water too hard too fast you can damage their swim bladders but I believe temperature and pH are the two you're correct and my opinion and I want to thank you for your channel I have learned a lot from watching you thank you very much

Hello. FISH ER Or fish hospital 😊. I isolated the fish in a Brita water pitcher with AQUAFINA and some tank water because you have to mix some of the old tank water with the beneficial bacteria and good water purified drinking water so as to help with shock. Then make sure the algae is GONE. It sucks oxygen. I only know my fish were oxygen starved from algae and nitrogen and ammonia 😢. Opening up a window or door to let a different temperature in the room isn't good either but SLOWLY raising the temperature is good for swim bladder. If you're running an air conditioner it's okay if it's a constant temperature. In the winter, they do well with the heat and fan to move the water like a space heater etc. A lot of people have to improvise like using coffee machine filters for cleaning the inside walls of the tank is fine. I have used the white ones with no harmful effects. Make sure you rinse your hands really well and use clean dry coffee machine filters with a little AQUAFINA water for the inside walls. Okay thanks I'll tune in again later. Have a good day 🙏🏻😊💪🏻

Also on large or large portions of water changes like 50% or more, just add new water slowly or in increments like 5min water on, 5-15min water off(with at least an air stone or wave maker running, and I'm describing a sink to tank water change, but generally applies to any water change, just your step one may not be to run over and turn the faucet off yours might be don't pour another bucket in,,lol) Watch fish behavior closely, if it doesn't seem to be affecting your fish, keep filling.

I'm luck enough to have a large and small tank so if something catastrophic starts happening I move whoever is upset into the small tank and give a MASSIVE dose of api stress coat then I'll throw a jungle buddie or two in for fungal and a little bit of bacterial treatment. I've had it happen where I've had a completely healthy tank and one stressed out puffer started getting sick and gave a few kulhi loaches something unknown that cleared up with antibiotics. I learned one stressed fish can cause a tank wide issue. The figure 8 puffer sadly ended up dying but he did teach me to take more immediate action.

This literally just happened to me today. I did about a 50% water change (exactly like I usually do) and I use RODI water that I remineralize myself... I can't imagine what I did wrong but more than half of my fish were lying at the bottom of the tank with clamped fins. I actually thought they were dead minutes after I finished cleaning the tank... I really have no idea what went wrong. But I put in an extra air stone, and I added an extra dose of Fritz complete, and about 20 minutes later they were all back to normal. I did test the water parameters shortly after I noticed that they weren't doing well, and everything was perfect. I just wish I knew what I did wrong so I don't repeat the mistake... That was really scary. But I'm glad they're all okay 😢

Great points Ben. I always double or triple dose the prime. According to Seachem you can dose 5 times the recommended amount. I live in Florida and in the summer time the water out of the faucet is 85 degrees. I keep my tanks at 78-79. So when I add water I turn the faucet very low to add water slowly. I still struggle to not raise the temperature. I will throw some ice in the tank to keep the temperature from going up to fast. I keep the filters running and the water dropping from that height with the water level low makes a lot of splashing and oxygenates the water. I have had no issues harming the fish.

That's some hot tap water! Something you'd see in places like Arizona and Nevada. I can see how adding some ice would help. I've see frozen water bottles in tanks during the summer months. Sounds like you've got it wired. I imagine in nature there are summer rains that can be warm water.

I have a situation. My dad didn't really take care of his tank. He'd do water changes every so often as far as trying to fix nitrate levels. But the problem is is that he hasn't changed the gravel and all of the fish waste and excess fish food is buried in the gravel. That is my guess for the high nitrate level even though I did a 50% water change and it didn't change the nitrate levels at all. He's had the tank for about 20 years, its older than me I think and I'm 21. But he's not really changed the gravel since then or anything. I want to completely redo the whole tank. Drain the tank, take out the gravel and deep clean everything. Then I want to plant the tank. I'm worried that changing to completely new, clean water will kill his fish. He has 3 Buenos aires tetras and two corydoras that are actually really old. I think we've had them since I was in middle school or maybe even late elementary. But is there a way can acclimate them to clean water?

The simple way i do when changing water is fill a 500 liter drum with water add airator for 24-48 hrs at least at the same room temp. as the aquarium. That way they can easily adjust and not get shock of sudden change, specially city water that has chlorine in it, by letting it set and aerated you reduce the chlorine and increase oxygen. To simplify changing of water use 10-15 percent daily or 3 days to water your plants its very beneficial to indoor plants or small garden. Hope it helps.

i deal with my pond and one problem a water change can cause or a drop in water temp is called pond rollover. the oxygen that once was trapped in the bottom and is freed and surfaces the colder water which lacks oxygen sinks to the bottom and vice versa warm rises to dop displacing the oxygen creating dead zones and anything caught in these zones will simply die we call them fish kills. to counter act, use a water circulator as well as an air rail or stone i prefer air curtain than bubbles going straight up because it affects more water surface area and causes a bigger disturbance. also, heaters should be only a few inches from the bottom to make sure all levels if the water is being warmed and a proper cover will also help to ensure not too much oxygen escapes.

Excellent video. Forgetting to add SAFE is the only water change disaster I have had. When I doubled the amount of SAFE I added the fish no longer experience flashing even with a 70% water chsnge. Assuming one has the WC routine working well the issues are usually related to chloramine, chlorine or ammonia spikes in the source of your water. I pre-tested my tap water for a few months to get comfort with the water from the tap and I observe the fish closely as I add new water. If there is a problem with the added water the fish behavior reflects distress very early.

This is not the first time I've heard of fish flashing after a water change with Safe. There are many other stories of the fish dying outright. Safe only neutralizes 0.52 mg/L chloramine. I have 1.5 mg/L in my tap water... Prime neutralizes 3.22 mg/L at 1 mg/10 gal so you need to increase the dose of Safe more than six-fold just to match it.

Dechlorinators ONLY remove 1 to 2 ppm of chlorine. Suppliers often use 4 to 6 ppm of chlorine to kill biofilm in the pipes. I've measure 11 ppm. So if your water supplier has done a super -chlorination adding a conditioner per the instructions won't work. I lost a tank of about fifty Lake Malawi to a super-chlorination even though I used a conditioner. So I test the chlorine level with a total chlorine pool test kit.

I’m having the same problem Ben. In Arizona the water has a tone of chlorine. My question I used water conditioner and stress coat and ammonia. But I had three fish die right away so and they were at the bottom. So I had to do another water change because the chlorine is strong here.

I saw one of my fish at the bottom, my first steps were: dose with prime, water test, inspect fish physically and see what stimuli they responded to, and lastly I dosed with Polyguard. Now I saw ich on my fish and the nitrates were way high and I only dosed with Polyguard once I saw the one spot of ich, I’d usually do ICH X but when I saw him so lethargic I knew it might be something as well as the ich cause they don’t usually get lethargic like that with ich, especially the first spot.

What I can't understand and something I haven't seen before! I've got a mixed fish tank and they have started acting weird! They're sat at the top of the tank, all fin's relaxed and not gasping for air just laid there with their mouth closed! Then after a while they will swim around as normal but, then lay in the dark again relaxed fin's and no signs of gasping! I've tested the parameters and they have changed very little if any and temp a steady 72! I give them a 50% water change every week or 25% after 5 days if I see a rise in Ammonia during weekly test's. They get fed twice a day, enough to eat in 2 mins max each feed. Any advice would be much appreciated.

I overdosed with safe once. The fish were on the bottom but gulping like crazy . I did another immediate water change within minutes they were fine. If you use safe to dechlorinate your water a little goes a long way.

Yes, like 1/4 teaspoon is good for 300 gallons. Crazy potent stuff.
@aquariumiconoclast1613

@@BenOchart That dosage of Safe neutralizes 0.52 mg/L chloramine. The recommended dose of Prime neutralizes more than 6 times as much (3.22 mg/L). All the deaths using Safe are due to underdosing since even two teaspoons per 10 gal only has a minor effect on oxygen levels.

@@aquariumiconoclast1613 1.25 grams will neutralize 1 ppm chloramines for 300 gallons. This is Seachem information. I hate to question your math but I QUESTION YOUR MATH. Source references are blatantly missing.

Snails can thrive but fishes can't. Try to get small fishes like neon tetra, guppies and molly. They're good 👍

Is there a point where a parasite can be ruled out as being the cause of fish stress? What I mean is, if I haven't added any new fish in "X" number of months, then I can rule out a parasite. Some videos (not yours that I can remember) seem to imply that parasites are always in our tanks waiting to breakout. At the risk of someone breaking into a chorus of Kumbaya, I vote for your 'learning together' slogan. Thanks for the videos.

There is a theory that there may be parasites in the gut but a healthy fish can keep them in check and after stress (bullying, big pH shift, etc) the fish weakens and the parasites multiply. Not entirely sure if this is totally accurate. That being said, I've had fish that for years have had what looks like a slightly sunken belly (my Z Rock, Eyebiter, etc) but eat like pigs, have great color and are very active. Do they have a parasite or are then just shaped that way?

Did a water change in a 29 hex fish went into shock luckily I had 10 gallons of their old water from their old tank that they were sitting in while I was doing my change promptly threw them back into the 10 gallon tank and save their life! So I guess what I'm saying is always keep a little bit of water cuz you never know I know I will from now on
