In this recumbent trike vlog, join me in Part 1 of my 30-day cycling challenge where I decided to ride my Steintrikes Wild One recumbent trike each day for 30 days in a row. On Day 1 I started with only 1 km, and added 1 km more to the ride each day, hoping to reach 30 km on day 30. The idea was to get into the habit of riding every day, and so I started really small to ease myself into it. This is Part 1, and will be continued to Part 2. On all days I ride within the city of Novi Sad, without leaving to regional roads, so you can also see different parts of the city (more in part 2). I hope you like it!

I'm still new to my trike, so I am the one waving at all the people, especially children, who seem to be very excited that I'm able to see them at their eye level. There is a better connection, when they don't have to crook their necks to see you. It's great to see their reaction to the trike, and then their parents who often are looking as their kid is pointing. Trikes are extremely rare in my town, as are recumbent bikes. I've not yet encountered another in 20 years of living here in a rural town north of San Diego California, but I do know there are a few around (from noticing folks online). I imagine without the weight of your 30 day challenge, riding in the rain would be a non-starter. Great challenge. It sounds like when things return to normal, cycling to work could be an option for you. Glad you were able to get a COVID vaccine. In San Diego, they just got to 50 years and older level, so I went on my first day of eligibility an April 1st. My wife is a little younger than me, and has to wait an extra 2 weeks to be eligible. Question: I'm adding the Sturmey Archer 3 speed internal gear hub (plus 9 speed cassette) to my trike as my original 19 year old hub is failing. I think you mentioned you have one. What type of shifter do you use, and do you find yourself mostly shifting the cassette and rarely the IGH, or do you shift down at the stops and up as you get to speed with the IGH? It looks like it's pretty flat in Novi Sad.

Thank you for your comment! Actually in normal times I do go to work, and anywhere around town on a bike. As I've been working from home for more than a year now, I feel I move much less, and that was the main motivation to start moving everyday, no matter what. I find challenges work great for me as a motivation, so I thought I will just try to ride every day for 30 days and see how it goes. And I am so happy I did it, I feel riding, and even just getting out of the house every day, is very beneficial for me and makes me feel so much better. As for the vaccine, I was in a priority group because I work in the university, even if we have online classes for now, but I think they want to bring things back to (close to) normal as soon as possible.. And for the gears: I would say that I use both, but while riding I usually shift with the cassette, but also with the IGH when I get to speed, and then when I stop I put it back for an easier start. I also find it very cool when I reach an uphill or just forget to shift down before stopping somewhere. It is pretty flat here, in fact, most of the city is completely flat, and for us, even a bridge is considered an "uphill" 😂

I try to ride my trike every day, but this would be way too much for me! Good for you! That's more than 18.5 American miles on that last day. Whew! You are super!

Thank you so much! I also think that it is a decent ride and workout on the last days of this challenge. During the spring and summer we like to go touring, and then we usually cover longer distances every day, but in everyday life I think 30 km in a day is more than enough for me. 😊

To ride every day is a great achievement. It’s a great challenge congratulations. Like you I get plenty of comments and mostly thumb ups. Here in the Uk, recumbent Trikes are still a rarity and draw similar comments to your experiences. Good luck on your second half of your challenge. Hopefully by now all completed successfully.👍😀🚴‍♂️.

Thank you! Indeed, the main challenge was to go out every day for a ride, no matter how short or long, no matter the weather, or other obligations I have during the day. I have been working from home for a year now, and I move much less than I normally would, so I wanted to get some motivation to go out of the house and ride every day. 😊

Again a nice video to start the weekend. What a challenge!! In the beginning it must be difficult to stop already after 1 km. But taking the time for a riding EVERY day seems even more difficult. I can't imagine me doing that although I like riding my trike very much. Maybe when I didn't have to go to work or if I could go to work with the trike it would be easier. I hope you didn't have to bad weather there for the second part, because here in Belgium we had a bad storm raging for a couple of days in march. Also happy birthday to Blanka. (I hope see liked the cake)
@bici.family
@bici.family 3 года назад
Thank you! The cake was a complete success 😊 You are right, in the beginning it was hard to go for such a short ride, but it didn't take long to come to longer days, when I reached ~10 km it was already OK. In fact, the main motivation came from the fact that I have been working from home since March last year, and so now I move much less than in normal times, and I wanted to get "a push" to go out and ride every day. It is indeed much easier on a holiday, or in the weekends, when you have no constraints, but on work days it's sometimes a challenge to fit the ride in your day, especially if you don't have to leave your home for work. As for the weather, you'll see, there were a couple more bad days in the second half. Even now, they are forecasting new snow for the next week... and we are really looking forward to the real spring and longer rides!

Wow, this is great! I know how much willpower it takes to get out every day like you’re doing and so far it’s been very impressive! I am also glad you handled your second vaccination without any problem. I was fine after my second one but my wife was very sick for a day as were my son and daughter-in-law. It would have been really hard to ride if you weren’t feeling well. Oh, and happy belated birthday to Blanka! 🎂
@bici.family
@bici.family 3 года назад
Thank you very much! 😊 Yes, it often takes a lot of willpower to go out, especially in bad weather (I wasn't expecting so many bad days in March as we had this year) or when you have other tasks that need to be done. But I decided it's time to find a way to move more, I've been working from home since March last year, and I feel that I miss my normal everyday commutes... And for me, challenges work really well as a motivation! As for the vaccine, I did have a small reaction in the evening that day - I was tired and sleepy, so I went to bed and by the morning I was feeling completely OK. I'm glad I'm over it!
@DavidRidesaTrike
@DavidRidesaTrike 3 года назад
@@bici.family Glad you got over the reaction quickly. It's interesting how people's reactions vary from none at all to really strong, flu-like symptoms. But in every case I've heard of except one, by the following day (two days after the shot) everyone was feeling better. It's a small price to pay for protection. I hope your weather gets better. We've been really lucky. Much nicer spring than we often have. Oh, check out my latest video. It's about triking vlogs and you and your family are one of the ones I talk about for a bit.

A bientôt !

Merci beaucoup!

I've not long had 2 greenspeed trikes- a gt3 and a magnum big wheel. What I'd like to know is how did you hold back and only ride 1km on the 1st day? Or for that matter only 30 km on the last day? I was so keen, before I got my trikes I built a recumbent bike just to build my legs so they'd be ready for trike riding! The country town I live in nobody's seen recumbents it seems because i rode the home made bike on the jetty (large jetty) and got about 90 people's funny looks, excited kid's "look!" And 2 people wanting photos! It's mid winter here in South Australia so only getting out every other day to ride.
@bici.family
@bici.family 3 года назад
Hahahah that is so true, it's hard to stop after only 1 km 😂 It started more like a joke - I wanted to get out every day for a ride, but as it doesn't always fit my schedule and working hours, this idea came up as something easy (and sometimes also ridiculous) and I accepted the challenge. As for the 30 km on the last day, in fact 20-ish km are the perfect ride for me for a weekday.

I like the couple, I have a Stein trike, but 1k start? Hardly worth getting dressed for, even 30k is basically a normal everyday ride. Should have at least started at 5 to 7k. Riding in adverse weather is always oh so fun ehh? I enjoyed the video though. My experience is most of the road/public/vehicle response is friendly and polite. Get a trike, fun fast, and comfortable.
@bici.family
@bici.family 3 года назад
Haha, that's true! The rides were not meant to be long, but more of a "move everyday" kind of thing. I have been mostly working from home for a year now, and without the everyday bike commute I feel I have been moving much less than normal, so I wanted to find a motivation to get out of the house every day and go for a ride. As you say, even 30km is not such a long ride, but on a weekday it was still challenging to find time for a ride every day in the last week or so.

@@bici.family Have you considered an "E" conversion? I have a Motor on both my trikes and the fun it adds is hard to describe especially when those long hills present themselves. One of my trikes I set up as a off-road trike with fat tires (not the Stein)
@bici.family
@bici.family 3 года назад
@@hrdtduck, so far we haven't considered upgrading to the e-version. Maybe sometime in the future, but for now we enjoy the ride as it is 😊

If you want peace and quiet DON'T ride a recumbent. LOL Also if you are in a hurry to get somewhere. Everybody wants to know about them and what it's like to ride them and the one that gets me is "How can you feel safe riding that thing when you can't be seen". LOL Everybody see's it.
@bici.family

Hahahah, that is so true! I will use this argument the next time someone tells me "no one will see you on the road". 😂 Normally I don't have a problem with people commenting, I find they are genuinely interested in what it is and how it is to ride a trike, and are positive about it.
