My 3rd Attempt At Figure Painting! (French Tankers | Alpine 1/35)

My friends, tonight is my 3rd attempt at painting miniature figures but this time they're gonna be special in some way - instead of regular uniforms, they wear leather jackets! What's the difference? Well, it's a good excuse to try slightly different shading and blending techniques and also attempt some textures!

I haven't painted any figures since about 1993, but when I did, I painted eyes with a light grey and tiny dark brown dot for the cornea\pupil. I usually used a sewing needle for the brown spot. Using those instead of white and black helped scale it down and blend better with the rest of the face.

When my Grandfather was alive he was into models & I swear & I have family on both sides that can back me up on this but he painted a American soldier eating a peanut butter & jelly sandwich . It was so tiny that I couldn’t Believe how he did it it blew my mind & you could see it with the naked eye . The attention to detail was amazing .my mother has a old WWI German Bi-plane he made & painted from scratch , it’s in pieces & all I would have to do is re glue it back together , the thing could be as old as me or older . One day I will get up the nerve to fix it then I,ll place it in a glass box as a keepsake .

I will recommend this every time you do non-armor: Check out Citadel "Contrast" and "Air Clear" paints. While their "layer" and most "base" paints are comparable or inferior to other brands like Vallejo or AK, those 2 lines are amazing. The "Contrast" line is formulated to either flow into recesses or stick to raised surfaces depending on how heavy you are with it. It is mostly a flow improving medium so the "thicker" you use it the more it will pool in recesses. If you use it thin or try to blend it as it dries it will stick to raised surfaces [like your thinner blending technique on armor, but with water-based acrylics, and a single product]. The following colors would help you from this line: -Guilliman Flesh: a medium/dark brown for leathers and tanned skin, depending on base coat -Skeleton horde: a drab yellow for bones, olive skin tones, khaki, old wood or other yellow-brown surfaces -Black Templar: its a black designed to be painted over a grey undercoat to make highlighting/shading black surfaces easier -Basilicum grey: a medium grey, great for rubber [like road wheels and antenna mounts] and concrete. There are other good ones, but they are for garish colors like blood red [Blood Angles Red] and deep blue [Ultramarines Blue] The "air [color name] Clear" line are airbrush ready glazes. They also work fine with a brush. The Shade Line is also good if you just want an acrylic pinwash effect without the gloss finish. -Deathshroud Clear in particular is a good glossy black for dark leathers. As a "clear" it dries as a thin glaze, adding shine and muting the base color overall. -Nuln oil in the "Shade" line functions as an acrylic pinwash for cool colors. Agrax Earthshade in the Shade line does the same for warm dark colors like leathers, dark skintones, burnished gold [like buttons], deep reds etc. It pares well with Guilliman flesh for a deep warm brown -Rechlander Fleshshade [also a "Shade"] is a lighter shade for brighter warm colors like reds, ambers, copper, shining gold [like medals], and skin. Paired with Skeleton Horde it gives a mediterranean or middle eastern skintone, with Guilliman it makes ruddy complexion [suntanned caucasian with a pale base color, African or South American tones with various medium-dark brown undercoats. The rest of the range is outside the scope of your use and your paints/methods do the same/better for other colors, especially for yellows, a color I'm trying to find a good range for, look up Imperial Fists Space Marines, then look at the yellows Citadel has in person to see my issue. Otherwise love your work!
@TheDarkplace
@TheDarkplace 3 года назад
I agree on the contrast paints, some of the best paint workshop does . Basilicanum grey is great out of the pot and thinned with some medium it can be remarkable. I all so can not say enough good things about Athonian Camoshade my go to shade to age buildings. A thin layer of it at ground level can really tie the terrain into the board. As for the rest of the range the best I can say is its readily available in the UK.

Super successful result. One small suggestion would be to lower the contrast on nose. A lot of figure miniature painters add contrast where it kinda shouldn't be, defining shapes for the sake of it. Hair lines on busts are another place this happens. Basically I'd keep the darker values to directly under the nose. That would keep it more consistant with the lighting you've painted on the rest of the model. Great stuff though, dude!

Looking good! I am going to predict that as you get more comfortable with figures, we'll be seeing a lot more of them in your vignettes and dioramas. As a side note, there is a kit I think you would really enjoy, the British Special Air Service Jeep by Tamiya. These were used in North Africa during WWII as raiding and reconnaissance vehicles, and by all accounts were very effective. The kit itself is loaded with Jerry cans, Lewis Guns and other oddments, and includes a driver and passenger/gunner. I've built a couple of them, one as a standard "display" version with pristine paint and details, while the second was given a goodly amount of dirt, grime, grease, dents, dings, and the clutter you find in any vehicle that serves as both transport and home for the crew.
