My A/C Broke. Replacing Capacitor and Fan Motor on Lennox HS-29

My Lennox HS-29 air conditioning unit was not working and I fix it in this video. First, I look at and replace the capacitor, test the compressor and fan motor. Then I ultimately end up replacing the fan motor itself with great results.

Just a note. You should not really try to do what I did in this video if you do not feel comfortable working with electricity and HVAC systems. Hire a professional. The vast majority of HVAC folks are honest and hard working and will get your system up to speed in no time. As a retired homesteader I like to try new things but I am taking a risk and can damage my own equipment if things go wrong. Keep that in mind before you tackle anything similar.

I noticed my Carrier unit stopped cooling. My fan wasn't spinning, and compressor wasn't turning on. I could manually turn my fan to start. My capacitor was swollen and tested bad. Took pictures before disconnecting any wires. Replaced for $10. I have AC! Fan still works but makes a slight sound. A tech recommended replacing the fan. Took a picture of the fan label and ordered the OEM on Amazon for less than half the price I was quoted for an aftermarket. When it arrives, I'll take pictures of the wires and watch this video again. Thanks for sharing.

Glad that it helped. I always take pictures of the wires as a reminder where they go. Some fan motors have a long shaft to connect the fan and some short, like mine. "If" you do have the long shaft on your new motor you can measure the distance from the top of the shaft to the fan bolt on your old one to ensure the fan has the proper distance from the motor on the new one.

Good helpful information anything related to the a/c is very expensive as you showed. I am curious as to why you used two different meters to diagnose the capacitor and the compressor and by the way I am not familiar with either one, if you are ever short on video ideas please make a video on those two meters and on what and how to use them

Good question! Michael, I have a couple multi-meters. The second one was my every day go-to multi-meter and it measures ohms and volts which is what I used to test my unit. However, the second multi-meter does not measure capacitors, or microfarads. I remembered, that only my Klein Tools CL700 multi-meter does and I used that to measure the microfarads in my capacitor. The Klein multi-meter is my most expensive multi-meter, about $120. But you can always pick up cheaper meters for $50 that do not have the ability to test capacitors. Yes, the more expensive multi-meter can measure everything and I recommend it if you are looking into doing this type of work in the future. The symbol for microfarads on a multi-meter is usually represented as 'uF', 'μF', or 'MFD'. I will consider creating a video on multi-meters but I don't consider myself very good using one, just a casual user.

Glad you were able to get the air conditioner fix. I can't believe I sat and watched you do this because it is something I personally would not tackle but one can get an idea of what can go wrong.Muchas gracias.

I know the feeling. Lol. Yes, ac units break all the time and the capacitor is usually the biggest problem, but in my case it was the fan. But good to know how things work. This type of work can be very expensive too.

Gracias. Si llamaba a un reparador de aire creo que iba gastar como dos mil dolares. Por eso decidi hacerlo yo mismo. El mantenimiento es muy importante en estas unidades de aire. Ojala y algun dia puedas usar esta informacion para tu aire. Saludos.

It's a good idea to have an electrical meter to test if you actually turned the power off first. You can also use the meter to discharge the capacitor instead of potentially exploding a screwdriver in your face. Also the capacitor doesn't give it a boost of energy, it's just keeping the phase of the incoming AC currents at the correct spot. The start winding of the motor needs the peak of the sine wave to be ahead of the other windings.

Fan motor was probably siezed up but good job at being thorough with testing all the other items. As a HVAC Tec I would leave the viewers with a couple of pointers. 1) check capacitor first before buying one - Capacitors can go bad after storms, power surges, or age. 2) if fan isnt operating, shut off power via disconnect and spin the fan blade, if motor spins freely and smoothly, likely its a electrical issue in the motor, if unit stops suddenly, motor is siezed and needs replacing. I dont recommend pushing in contactor multiple times due to the potential of damaging the compressor. What I list above is a way to check a bad fan motor without turning on unit to check if your diagnosis is correct like creator. This is just constructive criticism and I like how OVI Duran Explained everything in this video. Keep up the good work

Not trying to bash on a/c companies for doing their job correctly but when you show a clip of that fellow RU-vid that was charged the $1,102.28 for supposedly getting his capacitor changed out seems to be that on his invoice you can clearly see they charged him for other items as well. So maybe it wasn’t honestly $1,102.28 you can see they charged him for 1. Dispatch trip charge 2. 30 amp fuse 3. The turbo capacitor 4. Additional labor/svc 5. 1 year H&C maintenance plan Now I normally don’t defend hvac companies but I can how to say that the $1,102.28 invoice you seen on his video claiming to be from the capacitor isn’t entirely true and can’t be bashing on a company who actually itemized the charges on the invoice.

You may be correct Derrick. I will review that clip again today and may have to remove it to avoid any discord or misinformation. Thanks.

You really shouldn't encourage people to work on their own systems. You figured it out but best to hire a professional. We don't all scam people for thousands. There are a lot of us honest HVAC repairmen out there. Also., stop pressing the contactor like that, it's displacing the oil and could harm the compressor if it's done repeatedly

The vast majority of HVAC folks are honest and hard working. I am reviewing the section in question about the fellow RU-vidr in California and may remove it today.
