A few short years before his passing I had the good fortune to be invited to a Moe Norman clinic at Larters at St. Andrews golf course near my home in Winnipeg Manitoba. What a treat, and to this day, I still watch the video and find pearls of Moe's golf wisdom. Presented in 3 parts. Enjoy.

Right away in the beginning too... "if you can make this sucker talk, save you a lot of headaches". Pitching wedge was the first club I picked up. It's also the one club I've spent a majority of the time with. People use 52, 56, 60 from 120 and in... but man... stick to the pitching wedge usually 48 degrees, and master it! You'll notice that drives, long irons, don't even worry you anymore!

Pipeline Moe was the greatest ball striker ever!! No graphite, no lie and loft angles changes. No tinkering!! Just hitting ordinary balls extraordinary well. He was and always will be the greatest ball striker. Unfortunately, like another superb Canadian ball striker George Knudson, they had little or no interest in putting. If they had they would have won a lot more tournaments. RIP Moe A movie made would be great. Heard that Philip Seymour Hoffman was offered a chance to make a movie before his death. A SHAME IF THEY DON'T!!

I had the pleasure of meeting Moe years ago at our club as he was a good friend of the late Bill Fox. He was a character but man he knew how to hit the ball. That's where I learned the path of the clubhead and dragging it back through the backswing.

@TheKman1960 No point video taping 500 golf balls landing in the same spot. The magic is Moe's swing so I was intent on that. Notice how every onlooker turns their head to watch Moe's ball flight and not one is watching his amazing follow through and balance. How can you learn if you don't watch the guy. Amusing. I guess they wanted to see one go astray but not a chance. I had my eyes fixed on Moe that whole afternoon and learned a lot. Thanks for your question.

@TheKman1960 My mistake. Of course. Moe positions the ball about an inch farther away at address as if he has to reach a bit for it, to compensate for centrifugal force as the club head is pulled outward slightly by C. force. (Brilliant). Makes sense and I started doing it and .........WH:AM!! I am sorry that I did not line up the video better (my first camera) but I am grateful I got what I got.

In January 1995, Titleist decided to pay Moe $5,000 per month for nothing more than his unique contribution to the game of golf. They did this until Moe passed away September 4, 2004 at the age of 74.

Moe was the best at hitting straight golf shots ever. I used to swing like Moe, but am doing much better since I switched more to a Bryson DeChambeau like Setup for impact golf swing. I hit it much farther than I did with the Moe swing and more consistent as well. Wish I could have seen Moe in his prime though. I’ve heard stories about Moe Norman hitting balls off of Augusta’s practice green to prove he never took a divot. Would like to hear a few different sides to that story, and see everyone’s reaction when they saw Moe hitting 4 irons off their pristine practice green. 😂😂 This guy could have revolutionized golf, even back then, at the very least provided a 2nd viable and acceptable way for PGA professionals to teach the golf swing. If the tech was around back then maybe it would have been possible. Glad to see he won’t forgotten anytime soon! Awesome human being!

I lost a lot of distance trying to copy the Moe Norman golf swing. Even went to a few Schools to learn it. Lost a ton of distance because of restricting the leg movement, keeping the right foot flat and standing so far from the ball. One lesson in Kirk Jung's setup for impact golf swing fixed everything. His method is more like Bryson D's swing. Much more on plane than Moe too.

He loses distance but gains in accuracy. I have tried his swing and use it all the time now. Accuracy beats distance every time. He used to drive 220 yards even later in life. If you have accuracy, you can still land mid or even long irons on the green.

I once got to see a few of his irons- they were very, very heavy- that's true. Wonder if that helped with his great accuracy.
@dylancole7737
@dylancole7737 5 лет назад
My theory, besides the fact that he probably became so strong from hitting millions of balls, is that he said that he never liked to put a lot of backspin on the ball. Heavy clubs have a higher smash factor, producing maximum ball speed with minimum club speed (clubhead speed is the most important factor, along with spin loft, for determining spin). The wide sole, cavity back (low COG) irons he appeared to use would have also helped with this.
@majorsmythe1
@majorsmythe1 5 лет назад
His irons I saw were blades. He used them in his prime, but they were very heavy, and had very stiff shafts. interesting as you think that would SLOW clubhead speed ??. Great player- but his irons were really heavy.
@iwoody1962

I feel like a heavier club like he had would basically take your arms and hands completely out of the swing. Basically all knees, as he says, and gravity.

Here is what he has done. Since he had been hitby a car in his very young age, he was a bit mentally challenged, in the same way as an autistic child is. Instead of developping a super musical hability, he developped a super golfing hability. However when he joined the PGA he was dressing a bit like John Daly but he was in the 40's and the 50's. So locker room was a place where he got nagged and even threatened if he did not dress per the ''code''. So he quit the tour. One day he had won but was to afraid to pick his trophy up, he went hiding alongsidea nearby reiver where his caddy finally found him. Leaving the PGA tour is the main reason for him not winning much of it. Otherwise , even Tiger Woods as good as he is would have never achieved the records that Moe Norman set. As an example, hduring his career, he hit 91% of his fairways and the remaining 9% was in the first cut. He missed one once and swore it would never happen again ,...and it DID NOT ! Hereafter are his life achievements (Ref Wikipedia) Career highlights Canadian Amateur Championship winner (1955, 1956)[1]; 55 career Canadian Tour and other Canadian event victories; Canadian PGA Championship winner (1966, 1974)[1]; Canadian PGA Seniors' Championship winner (1979-1985, 1987); 33 course records; 17 holes-in-one[1]; Several exhibition rounds under 60 (lowest rounds of golf); Inducted into the Canadian Golf Hall of Fame in 1995; Inducted into the Ontario Sports Hall of Fame in 1999;[2] Inducted into the Canada's Sports Hall of Fame in 2006; Two appearances by invitation as an amateur in the Masters Tournament: 1956 scored 75-78 then withdrew; 1957 scored 77-74 to miss the cut by one stroke. PGA career According to ESPN, Norman played the PGA Tour beginning in 1959. After a tournament in New Orleans, PGA officials gave Norman a dressing down regarding his playing antics. Feeling let down by the PGA's attitude towards him, Norman returned to Canada to play golf. According to the PGA Tour web site, the following is Norman's record on the PGA Tour: 27 total events played, with 25 cuts made 1 top ten finish and 7 top 25 finishes $7,139 in tournament prize money Additionally, Norman played on the Senior PGA Tour events from 1981 to 1984. According to the PGA Tour web site, the following is Norman's record on the Senior PGA Tour: 5 total events played, making the cut in all 5 events 1 top three finish and 2 top ten finishes $22,983 in tournament prize money A tie for third at the Peter Jackson Champions tournament in 1982, finishing with scores of 70-69-69-69, and winning $10,133 in prize money.

No way I believe in this bullsht myth about how good Moe Norman hits the ball unless I see crystal clear uncut video proof of it, or if I see this type of swing demonstrated live with my own eyes. Where's the video that shows the actual distance he hits on a full swing and whether the ball repeatedly lands on the intended target? I don't think Moe himself knows his own swing. When he explains his swings he'll say he does or doesn't do a certain thing. But when you watch his actual swing he doesn't do what he says at all. And why is it that he seemed to only hit distance-robbing half swings? A half swing in any swing style would of course make better ball contact, be more accurate, and be easier to execute than doing a full swing. This looks like an obvious scam to try and sell to gullible noobie weekend golfers a Moe Norman styled swing system. Pathetic!

OMG. Not this again. We DONT NEED TO SEE THE BALL. We are watching Moe. Look at old guys watching Moe He hit EVERY ball within a feet out on the fairway. The old guys NEVER looking at his body or FINISH. THEY ARE MISSING THE LESSON. I AM THE VIDEOGRAPHER and I was glad to be there that day. Watch Moe Not the BALL and LEARN SOMETHING MY FRIEND.

You would think somebody filming a great golf ball striker would have enough sense to get the golf ball being struck in the shot.

Wish they had edited out the wind noise --very irritating and hard to hear Moe !

Well ever since that video in all my years of editing I have seen no way to remove the wind noise. I assume you see the trees bending in the background? This is for the most part the reason the camera is so close. On board Mic. NO MIC ON MOE Obviously. Sorry I irritated you. Thanks for watching anyway.

Moe doesn't have many video left and none about his putting, he don't know what he is doing, so if you follow his instructions you will be getting nowhere. The only way to learn is by watching his clips over and over again . But if you want to win some tournaments, go find a professional.

Pathetic!

@Tom Kowalsky. Did this Schmoe Norman guy even make the top 50 on the pro tour? I doubt it. That's my proof that he's full of sht right there, LOL! If he was that great then we would've heard about all the tournaments he had won. That didn't happen, did it?. Any 12 handicapper can hit well with a weak-az half swing. Quit trying to scam or confuse noobie golfers with lies and half truths!

@Ricky7D. How the hell would Tiger know anything about Moe's swing and how good or bad it was? Tiger was just a kid repeating a cliche myth told to him by everyone, just like what you're doing now. It's not like he was coached by Moe himself then used Moe's swing to win a grand slam to prove that Moe's method works best. Are you really that gullible?

55 Tour wins... Where's yours friend? 33 Course records... How many you got? 17 Holes in one... Some pro's never hit one in their career. Despite being a poor putter, scored 75 with 6 x 3 putts at the masters, and despite his hands being ruined after a friendly tip from Snead from their first ever meeting, where he hit into the darkness on the range, he scored a 78 and had to withdraw because his left thumb split open... The fact he was on the professional tour means none of the claims were exaggerated but verifiable. Just because he's a bit "different" doesn't diminish his golfing ability. And Snead (who Moe did play with and is regarded as one of the best players ever) said Moe Norman was the greatest striker of the ball he had ever seen. Snead played with Hogan don't forget! Also, does it look like that guy cared about money? He just loved playing and swinging - dead solid perfectly straight. He didn't need money, Titleist gave him a lifetime sponsorship of $5000 a month, which was paid until he died. He had more than enough money to live!

That's one of the worst swings ever. Too much to mention everything why. But one important reason, he's standing too far from the ball. The only way to hit it straight from that posture is to block the ball. I know from in person experience, Moe could hit it straight, but was very short. Maybe 250 with the driver. Which good player wants that? None. It's much better to stand closer to the ball, as close as you can without feeling crowded, and feel flat on your feet in balance. Look at Nicklaus, he stood very close to the ball and had an upright in balance swing. He was the best golfer I ever saw. Moe was mentally retarded, he didn't know much, says one thing, does the opposite, just hit 1000s of balls until he could hit it straight by habit. But to be a good golfer you must hit it far and straight! I have seen many golfers on the tours that hit it better than Moe. LOL
@tomkowalsky
@tomkowalsky 5 лет назад
Yet Jack and all the others said he was the best. You know better than all of them? Hit it straight by habit??? Thats hilarious Tony The Golf Pro. I was there watching Moe hit it 300 plus with his driver so I don't know what you are talking about. Did you ever see him in person? He hit the ball the purest not the BEST. This has been said many times by the best golfers.. Good clean CONTACT.

You don't know what you're talking about, Jack said Trevino was the best ball striker he ever saw. So did Hogan. Muscle memory is a habit dummy. I saw Moe in a clinic in West Palm Beach, FL in '93, the year I went to the PGA Tour Qualifying School. I saw him hit 50 drivers, all less than 250, so you must be a liar. Think about it dummy, how could the so-called best ball striker ever never win on the PGA TOUR? All excuses aside, he wasn't good enough, period! Also, when I met him, he lived in an old Cadillac whose interior looked like a garbage can. His trunk looked like a homeless bag of rags and junk. Moe was retarded, maybe you are too! Save your energy, don't write me again, you're so stupid you don't know you're stupid. LOL

Moe's swing is impossible to learn. He setup way too far from the ball which is why he had to drop down so far just to make impact. He learned to compensate for it. I switched to the setup for imact swing which is much more powerful and easier to learn.
