Thanks for the compliment, I keep trying. I believe I'll get the 6 cyl engine to run the car fine, once I get valve and seal leaks conquered!

This is what the art of invention is about - turning concepts into physical reality by simply having a go, and hopefully the investment in it pays off in the long-run. Wishing you every success with it!

Every man needs a hobby, and that's all it will ever be. In this day and age, many trial and error ideas have fallen because when known calculations are applied, it will produce an outcome saving time and disappointment. The law of entropy always rules in these endeavours. Cheers

I think everyone should have a hobby; it gives us something to think about and a reason to get up in the morning. No matter the outcome, I have accomplished designing and building something that is unique. It may not matter to someone else, but personal satisfaction is a good feeling. I have never thought of it as a hobby, it was a goal I started about 17 years ago.

I was at a swap meet and a guy had about 8-10 carbon fiber scott tanks from a fire department. They must have to be replaced after a certain number of years, that could be a source for tanks they are only 80cu. ft. but they could fit and be plumbed together with hydraulic hoses. How much hp does your paintball pump take, a small engine running that pump could make a highly efficient engine or electric motor with batteries and a solar panel to run the pump could increase range. It seems like 30 miles would get a person to most destinations and then recharge to get back would be practical. I'm tinkering with the electric vehicle idea but rather than finding a small car and taking as much weight off of it. I'm starting with a model T frame and only adding what will be necessary. I have a 48v forklift motor running through a NP435 trans for different ranges and reverse. I figure 12 lead acid batteries 3 groups of 4 wired parallel series. My goal would be to see if with a wind generator and solar panels if I could drive for a year without having to hook up to the grid.

Thanks for following along, and your comment. I have thought about multiple tanks 80 or 100 Cu Ft, but I don't want to have a lot of connections and most of all ones that are HIGH PRESSURE lines that are out in the open. I'm going for 1 or possibly 2 single 55 liter Tanks and a pressure regulator attached directly to each of the tank/tanks, which will feed lower pressure air to another tank that I will run off of. Good thought though - Thanks.

Compressed air is the single most inefficient power transmission method in use today. the losses to heat alone are enough to make this entirely unviable. And yes, I do have an idea. Convert to live steam. You'll never reach efficiency of more than 2-3% with compressed air. With steam you might get over 5%. Might.
@Circlotron
@Circlotron Месяц назад
I'd like to see one of these run in conjunction with a conventional IC engine that is fueled by propane. Use some of the exhaust heat to raise the temp (and consequently pressure) of the liquid propane at the end of the fuel line, then feed it into your air engine to extract energy as the pressure is reduced by the expansion in the cylinders, then feed the propane vapour that is exhausted from the air engine into the IC engine as normal. Should be possible to gain a bit of energy that is otherwise wasted.
@AirEngineResearch
@AirEngineResearch Месяц назад
Thank you for following along, and the comment and idea! I tried to draw out what your idea would look like. Running an IC Engine with propane and exhausting the hot exhaust through a heat exchanger that has pressurized propane with a check valve going through the exchanger to the Air Engine would increase the pressure for the Air Engine. Running the Air Engine would take quite a lot of propane, even after being heated to a higher pressure. I'm afraid the volume of Air Engine Propane going to the IC Engine would be more than the IC Engine can use - since it's already running on propane. Also your running two engines at the same time ? What would the Air Engine be used for ? I like that you are thinking about ways to gain useful energy from machines that are not as efficient as they could be, don't give up too easily!

If you're going to use a combustion engine, turbo compounding like in aircraft or volvo diesels makes more sense. That's where the turbo spins the crank rather than a supercharger. Some f1 cars have a turbo that directly runs a generator rather than a supercharger or spinning the crank.

Congrats on a fascinating project. I may not understand the way the final product is supposed to work on the road ? As I see it, this air engine uses effectively the same principle of operation as a steam engine. The steam engine uses gas (steam|) produced by a heated boiler built into the vehicle. Where will the compressed air come from to drive this air powered vehicle ? A steam boiler can maintain full working pressure to the last drop of fuel and water. Pre loaded air cylinders can only provide a very, very limited period/radius of operation with ever declining reserves of pressure. Obviously, a gasoline engine driving a compressor defeats the original concept. Great workmanship and an intrigueing challenge. I wish you well.
@AirEngineResearch

Thank you for responding and your question There really isn't a comparison to a steam engine, it runs from compressed air, not vaporizes water. It will carry at least 1 high pressure air tank at 5000 psi, regulated down to 150-200 psi to run the engine. I expect 40 to 50 mile round trip. I'm assuming that you haven't seem my later videos, there is much more to see on my you tube site.

Are these air engines single action or double action? I have built a couple of single cylinder air motors that were single action. They didn't have much power because they relied on the fly wheel for the exhaust cycle. I'm impressed by your six cylinder motor. I bet it could run on steam also.
@AirEngineResearch
@AirEngineResearch Месяц назад
Thanks for watching, and yes it could run off steam - although it would not be good for it - RUST Running an Engine on Compressed Air is a unique process which like I said "It has taken me many years to get to this point" The overall design is something that has never been done before, so I'm hoping it will prove it's self once in the car. The Cylinders only push. Stay with me and see!

The problem with A Air Engine is they require a massive amount amount of compressed air energy, the amount of air required makes the air engine move any distance for a period of time makes this engine/motor not efficient and never will be as well as having 4000psi and above can be quite dangerous, Nice way to kill time Though.🤣

@@AirEngineResearch I wish I could Help you on that, But Compressing air Takes a lot of energy, Even a 2 stage 220 volt compressor won't even come close to giving you the pressure and volume of air that you would need, you would need a specialized compressor and they are expensive, Also you would need quite an impressive solar panel array, As well as battery's and converter and a place to put all this equipment, I understand air is free to use but compressing it to be useable other that hand tools would lead me to believe the trade off would not be worth it. Good luck Though.

i bought one of these 5 cylinder air motors they use for mixing agitators that clamp onto barrels in order to see how well they take steam. in short, something inside was plastic and turned to goo and it stopped working after around an hour of running steam. how does your engine handle steam?
@AirEngineResearch
@AirEngineResearch Месяц назад
Thanks for watching and your question. The engine is a Compressed Air Engine, but could run with steam, for a short while, and nothing would melt. It is not designed to use steam and would not last very long, bearings would fail, and everything would rust quickly.

@@AirEngineResearch If you want to be efficient then just run the primary power input rather than the secondary. Or the electric motor on the compressor rather than what the compressor is trying to power. Thats if your looking for simple and efficient. Not taking any bark off you, what your doing is a fun project.

@@matton36The big idea behind it is to use the air tanks to store energy instead of batteries. The metals in batteries are horribly toxic, while an air tank could be made from mild steel.
