My Ankle ORIF Surgery Recovery: Relearning to Walk!

A couple weeks into quarantine, I broke my ankle in 3 places. I needed surgery, and now have a LOT of hardware in my leg!
During the recovery process, I was very worried about walking again. I didn't have a lot of confidence that I would get back to 100% (but spoiler alert, I'm almost there!) Twelve weeks after surgery, I hiked 2.5 miles (with some rocky terrain)! This video covers my recovery process from 6 weeks to 11 weeks post surgery.
I decided to make this video to share my recovery journey, and give some hope to others dealing with similar injuries. I hope you enjoy :)

Just started weight bearing 7 Weeks after my tibial surgery! I highly recommend pushing yourself to your limit when you can start to walk. For me it was stressful but I was able to go from no weight to walking in about a week. It hurt at first but just remember the pain is temporary!

Try to do non weight-bearing exercises, it will help with recovery a lot and regaining fitness, I skipped that and have sciatica again, and it will be ok, stay active with crutches, do as much as you can and be patient with yourself, after all who the hell is used to walk on 1 leg with full body weight! Follow the video with the motocyclist guy, he has the full process…this lady has the walking part, and also doing exercises after cast removed will help get the movement back to your feet.

Thank you for sharing this video. Im currently 5 weeks post op from tibia/fib fracture and placed in a boot 2 weeks ago. Im currently limited to toe touch but moving to weight bearing this week 😊 This entire healing process is emotionally and physically draining. After watching your video makes me feel hopeful that I'll be back to walking normally very soon. I pray for anyone going through a similar healing journey gets well soon.

I pray everyone has a speedy and safe recovery!!! I broke both sides of my ankle and tore my ligament. I broke my fibula and tibia. I had such a bad fall about a month ago. I got surgery April 22nd and was in a cast for 2 weeks and now in a boot! I am now toe-touch weight bearing. It’s really hard and mentally draining and exhausting! I am so scared because of the trauma from the fall to even try and walk again. This gave me hope!👼🏻❤️

@@jenniffer86 yeah it was rough and not easy at all and if you feel like you need more time take more time. When I took my first step I was terrified!!!!! But I had my family member with me to make sure I don’t fall after I did it I walked more and more each day. It still takes awhile after you are walking to get use to it and to trust your ankle. Now it has been almost 2 years 1 1/2 years and my ankle feels great besides I have damaged nerves in it but I jog and walk fine. I haven’t ran or did any jumping off of anything

Great video! I had a trimalleolar fracture on Dec 27th 2020, it was a really bad injury. I was put in an external fixture (steal poles in my leg) for 2 weeks before main repair surgery on Jan 13th. Then Was in a cast for 6 weeks followed by walking boot for a number of weeks. I removed the boot and started PT 3 weeks ago but still couldn't walk without crutches. I finally took my 1st step today without crutches after 4 months. I am a grown man with 3 young kids and I can tell you its physically and emotionally draining trying to recover. The pain is 1 thing but the fact that you can't play with your kids and do house work is a killer

I laughed a bit when I read this, I was 54 when I first broke a bone 6 months ago! And had to do it in spectacular style, trimalleor and dislocation. Nothing like seeing your own foot hanging off! After being told non weight bearing for 6-8 weeks, I naively thought that after 2 months I'd just get up and walk😂 It's probably better that I didn't know what was ahead!

I got 8 screws and a plate in my leg on Sept 7 2021. I train Jiu Jitsu and Muay Thai. Getting my ankle moving and controlling my toes has been a process and honestly ive been getting sad about my slow progress because I see people online saying it may be a year before ill be able to be normal again. ive been wearing shorts and a tshirt and bathing every other day ( i used to shower 3-4 times a day) and not working out at all ( i used to train at least 15 hours a week). After watching your video Tuesday night i decided to try to go back to living my life as if i wasnt broken because of you. I started wearing regular clothes and showering twice daily. i started working out with bands and today i started driving with the right foot again. i improved my range of motion and strength in my ankle by 2 or 3 times. My PT was surprised how much Ive improved in literally two days. He honestly didnt believe it. You really gave me the courage to start pushing myself. Thanks so much for this video. All you did was show us you can walk and youve become my inspiration. Thank you so much.

Thank you for sharing your recovery - watching it (with great attention) after a similar injury has helped a lot in visualising progress! I hope you're doing well now too. I had surgery immediately, and had a boot. I was told I could bear weight with the boot, but it wasn't possible to walk as the boot was so massive. I only wore it when I had to move around. I did a lot of exercises while I was lying around. At 3 weeks I was liberated from the boot - this week I have been going better and better. I am more confident and flexing the foot when walking 🎉 I am hopeful this morning, 24 days post surgery.

@@zoemabaso599 - Wow. I'm just the opposite. Done with the crutches but can't get rid of the boot. Tried a pair of sandals (loose fitting for the swelling) today but it didn't go well. Pain and balance problems. Can't return to driving until I get back into shoes. Can't rush it either. It's a challenge. Good luck. This isn't easy.

This helped me so much. I had reconstruction surgery on my foot to fix my arch, and some tendons on 12/28, it's now 2/9. I have xrays done on the 17th to see if I'll be allowed to put weight on it yet. To be honest, I've been putting a small amount of weight on it just enough to keep the joints loose so they don't contract. I was telling my husband there's no way I'll be ready to put weight on it by march 1st when I return to work. This gives me hope!

I also broke my ankle in three places in July. I was given a boot at six weeks and told to go start mobilising. I normally like to be spontaneous in life but with this experience, I craved very specific instructions. Left to my own devices, I took to RU-vid and just wanted to say that your post is the most motivational for me. I'm four days in to taking my first steps and increasing the number each day. I know you are now walking (yay) and you have been great at responding to all the questions asked, so I hope I'm not repeating but it would be great to know how much you practised each day? I started with two lengths of my favourite big rug and double it every day but I'm wondering if I should be doing much more? I don't get to see a physio for another three weeks. My niece made me a great soundtrack of songs about walking for my rug endeavours. Take care and thank you for sharing your experience.

They supposed to give you a physio appointment, I was craving it after 1 week in boot, had a phone appointment and in 6 weeks appointment, in the meantime they gave me exercises, if they don’t give it to you good to speak to a physical therapist. It will ease our minds. I must say after 1 week in boot it is improving nicely, just keep going and will improve

I'm 2 weeks past from my ankle surgery and my Ortho put me in a boot instead of a cast because of how well my body is healing (stay off the pain medication as much as you can people! It'll suck at times, but you'll be shocked how much better and faster your body will heal). I get to start moving my ankle to strengthen the muscles in it now and start weight bearing in 3 weeks. This gave me so much hope for getting to full weight bearing quickly. My Ortho told me he wants to see me walking in the boot without crutches by my next visit in a month, so this video shows me that it's definitely a realistic timeline for that! Thanks so much!
