Seeing these classic Remingtons is a real sight to see. They are very elegant and well made, and they look to be well kept up. Nice to hear the history behind them.

This was such a great video Mr Bellevue! I absolutely love the Remingtons ! How that DA Belt model didn’t become more popular is so strange to me ....! Whereas if the 1890 had been made in DA , it would be Legendary today , rather than a foot note ...! Wonderful collection - thanks for sharing it with us !

Trying to put myself in the shoes of the Gun buyer of that time I think I would look at the Remington as a Colt copy so why not by a real Colt! Also the American attitude always being run to the latest innovation had a lot to do with poor sales Of the Remington SA. After all isn’t that how they keep selling the latest smart phone? Just a thought.

My uncle gave me a USN Springfield 1870 rolling block rifle a few years back. He had no idea what it was. After researching it, I told him that it was a .50-70 rifle sold as part of a 10,000 order placed by the US Navy. “Well how did *that* end up in my father’s family?” My grandfather was born in Colorado Springs in the early 1980s. I told Uncle Bill “It would’ve been a perfect Buffalo gun.” It does not have that nice safety feature you describe in the 1871 model. I have to add that the design of the rolling block is simple and extremely robust. The way the breech locks up is just elegant IMHO.

Mike I have always liked antique firearms much better than modern guns. There is just something about owning a gun that has history. Whether it be family history or if it is a firearm that you acquire it is still much more of a pleasure to own and shoots. I like your channel because I learn a lot. It is not often that I learned something I did not know from watching a clip on RU-vid. But when I watch your channel I always learn something. I also prefer colts and Winchesters.

Hey, Mike….great video. I have a Remington Navy conversion (repro) done by the old R&D Gunshop about 1995. The whole thing is nickeled, too! Beautiful revolver and is made exactly your original. I had them leave the barrel .375…being the purist, that I am….so now I can fire 38 Long Outside Lubed hell based bullet cartridges. I obtained the crimp die from Old West Bullet mounds as well as bullets. Last year, I got hold of an Ideal loading tool for that cartridge and I also have a 38 LC Ideal tool, and a .357 hollow based bullet mould. Fun, Fun, Fun!

That's a nice Remington collection you got there Mike. A wonderful friend gifted me a Uberti Remington 1875 Outlaw in 45 Colt last week. I find the recoil manageable and even with its thin front sight, I can still hit metal discs at 25 yards. However, I find it easier to cock the hammer of my Colt clone Uberti Cattleman when firing one handed only and the grips seems more comfortable but who am I to complain. Thanks for your very interesting and historical video.

I have a Pietta 44cal. Remington with the extended frame, so it could fit my large hand. I thing it makes a great self defence pistol for dependable six shots. But I would not use it in a battle, because of it quickly getting fouled up. If I were to take a cap and ball revolver into a battle, it would be my 3rd model Colt dragoon. It fits my hand as it was custom made.

Seasons Greetings Mr. Mike. Your Remington collection is the envy of us all, I am sure. And I especially appreciate the information. There are times when I go to gun auctions and to tell you the truth, the gap of knowledge is plain to see. Usually the seller doesn't know, and the buyer is left with just the knowledge he may have. Your shows give out, in my opinion, valuable information. And I take note. Best Regards, Mr. Mike.

Love the old Remingtons. Over the years I have owned a dozen rolling blocks in 43 Spanish. Sold and traded it acquire a couple buffalo rifles I. 45/70. Also have a RB in 7mm. Only handgun I have is a smoot in 38 center fire. Oldest revolver I have is a number2 S&W. Built in 1863 and carried in civil war. Fro colts start with a 1860 c&b, then a 1860 cartridge conversion in 44 colt, then a 1878 in 45 colt, then a new service in 45 colt after that we get into modern firearms. I have fired all of the above firearms. I have even carried a few as varry guns and never felt undergunned.

I still think Remington was the better of the gunsmiths. They were thee barrels of the 1800's. Everyone else took awhile to catch up. They had the forging experience, the methods, etc. Colt was a business man, he peddled a ton of other dead end products. He was slinging all kinds of ideas for a buck. The Walker Colt is an impressive but really limited design. It is a hodge podge, with lots of clunk, say nothing of gun harmonics which pulls the assemblies apart upon firing. The full frame 44 Remington Army style frame lasted 20 years into the cartridge era. Good on horse, on foot, any situation. Its handy and versatile. Too bad the DA Belt 36 stopped working. I would love to see that thing in action.

Thanks for the interesting video Mike. I hope you and your family had a nice Thanksgiving Holiday. You know when you have spoken of facing down Evil Roy on the Range I always thought that he was mythical or a pigment of your imagination. This week I found out Evil Roy really is a real person. As a baby Evil Roy was the sole survivor on a wagon train of settlers going west. A group of friendly Native Americans found baby Evil Roy alone on the plains. In many cases they would adopt a baby foundling like this into the tribe and raise him as one of their own. They took a close look at Roy and decided he was the most evil Baby they had ever seen and left him where they found him. The ancient city of Rome was founded by two brothers, Romulus and Remus. They were abandoned as babies and only survived because they were suckled by a she wolf. A she wolf did come across Evil Baby Roy. She gave him one sniff and decided he smelled so evil she took off running into the night. Mike there is a Documentary film based on the life of " Evil Roy Slade ". You can find it here on RU-vid. ( I know figment is spelled with an F )

Great vid! I was a little disappointed that you didn't have an 1858 New Model Army. Yeah, I know, hard to find a nice one, and Italian replicas are cheap and you don't care for replicas. But I think the 1858 was the high point of cap and ball revolver development and far and away was superior to contemporary Colt revolvers. No wedge to hammer out, wear out, get lost. Fast tactical cylinder change. Top strap, full frame. I wish I could afford a cherry 1858 genuine Remington, but if I had one, I probably wouldn't want to shoot it. I do shoot my Piettas quite a bit and I really like them. It is a shame that Remington never made their own "Walker". The full frame would have made for a very strong gun that could easily have handled bigger loads than most shooters would care to fire. 80 grains black powder? 90gr? After the Colt Walker we didn't see equivalent power in a revolver until what, the .357? Or .44 Special? And I would argue that well, never mind what I would argue. The Walker was awesome and I had a replica of that one, too, and it was a lot of fun but I seldom loaded with the full 60gr of powder and never loaded the big conical bullets, either. I simply did not trust the half frame, nor the wedge based breakdown system, with powerful loads. If the Walker had a full frame and quick removable cylinder pin, it would have been the bee's knees and Colt would have sold a buttload of them, right up until cartridge revolvers came out. A conversion scheme could have kept the general design and load going right up until the Smokeless Era. I have fired a double action belt gun like you show, and yeah it is a sweet shooter. I can see how a new one would have been a real tack driving target gun as well as a practical belt carry gun. Back in the day, DA mode would have been a significant tactical advantage, too. The Police Model, I have never seen. I WANT ONE, NOW!!! (with the cap and ball cylinder, of course!) Thanks for showing that one. And the 50-70. Nice boom! Thanks for posting this. It was a very enjoyable watch.

I’m not sure if you’ve tried Anvil Gunsmithing for your Remington double action (he actually has a RU-vid channel as well), but I have seen him make entirely new parts by hand sometimes when the old parts were too worn to repair. So he may be able to resurrect it. But then again, as you said in the video, it may be cost prohibitive.

I know I’m late to the party, but what a darned shame about that Remington DA Belt gun, both that it didn’t catch on in popularity in its time (which it rightly should’ve), and that yours is now nonfunctional 😔. Glad you got some great use out of it. Here’s hoping that someday, somehow, they start making reproductions for it, I’d love to get me a pair of them.
