Advanced placement (AP) programs allow students to earn college credit during high school. But do you need them for grad / med school?
Directly: No. AP courses typically won’t be used to fulfill med school pre-req requirements, and do not raise your college GPA.
Indirectly: It helps! If a college accepts your AP credits, it will reflect on your transcript as hours towards graduation. Also, placing out of low-level college courses allows the freedom to take advanced courses earlier, and you’re more likely to get into classes you want.
Overall, exposure to advanced studies in high school is a good idea. I still use what I learned in classes like Spanish & comp sci often!

@wnw3jk h6r6kurj Hey firstly hope you're doing well and great. Secondly for APs it kind of depends on how competitive the uni is. Your academics is not all that uni's look for, if you didn't take APs but you have leadership/community service they usually balance out well. APs essentially boost up your application by showing time management skills and the ability to deal with heavy course load which any extra curriculars show as well. Essentially what I'm saying is that it's gonna be fine if you don't have any APs, just try to make your application well-rounded. If you have any other questions feel free to ask here or other platform you feel comfortable on 😀
@minsugagenius6488
@minsugagenius6488 3 года назад
@wnw3jk h6r6kurj Also once you're in uni your APs will probably mostly count in Gen Ed so if you're going to be taking APs later (if you're still in high school) I would recommend looking at the requirements for the program
@hanirehmani9613
@hanirehmani9613 3 года назад
@wnw3jk h6r6kurj it doesn't matter too much if you take ap classes or not. Most colleges wont accept them as prerequisites for medical school. Just focus on a good gpa and a nice mcat and good clinical experience and you should be able to get in.

@@mythl2179 The school system makes examples out of the people who didn't take higher tier classes all the time, and of course others were taught this as children too and so you'll see parents and other people in your everyday setting inforcing the idea as well, you hear shit like that your entire life. "Oh but if you don't go to college you'll end up being a McDonald's worker making minimum wage!!" It definitely was pushed in school to take the more advanced classes, and if you didn't fit the bill for those said classes?..Well... you were looked down upon. Not only by the students but by the faculty and staff, it's part of the reason I and many others have such bad self esteem problems. They pushed performance and not the actual retention of knowledge . A lot of what AP is, is actually just fast paced memory based learning, it's about percentages. The school pushes for more AP, lifts those people up, while forgetting about the vast majority of students, and for someone with ADHD, AP was a serious struggle for me; I could give the quality of work required but not at the pace they wanted. It was all speed speed speed, put those classes first above others and your own freetime kind of speed. On top of that a lot of these more advanced classes required an extracurricular activity to be in them. It was d r e a d f u l. On a side note, you're incorrect, art was heavily AP pushed, at least in my experience :) most of the electives even push for more advanced classes within that elective lol

You do not need AP, IB, or honors classes to become a doctor. Only take if you are for sure going to do well in classes and get that 5.0 GPA to boost your overall GPA for college application. If it’s going to lower your GPA, then don’t do it… 😂 also despite passing AP classes can help you skip college graduation requirements, some grad or med school still requires you to retake those courses for lower division requirements…

She said they would have to think about it. The womam told her "You don't understand Mrs. ******, your son's IQ is off the charts!". So they enrolled him and he took many, many, AP classes in all 3 of his Catholic schools with high hopes of getting a slot at UC Berkeley. Not only did he not get a slot, only one kid in his class did even though his grades paled to my friend's son. He ended going to a Catholic school on a scholarship in San Francico. Chalk it up to politics and out of State and Country money but whatever the reason, UC Berkeley is not looking for the best and the brightest anymore and that poor kid wasted his youth killings himself for nothing.

I wouldn't trust your HS AP knowledge in a class that's important to your major. I took AP calc and did well enough to test out, but my college had a one trimester review of a year of calc that came in handy. As an engineering major, figured it was important to have a strong foundation. I also took AP french, but on this I took the credit and entered into higher level classes. No biggie, it was just going to fulfill my humanities requirements. AP classes can save you some money if you get enough credits. You don't take them to i.otess people. You take the to perhaps avoid taking some of the basic classes and start with more advanced stuff. You can then either graduate early or take a minor or second major.

What state did you go to school in? Yes, it absolutely matters! I live in Western New York and when I was in 8th grade my friend, who was also in 8th grade and attended the same school as me all of his life, decided to move to Kentucky to live with his dad for a year. He was an average C+ student....at best in the New York school we attended. BUT when he started 9th grade the next year, in Kentucky's school system, he was placed in all senior AP classes and a few of their college courses available through their highschool. Let that sink in for a minute.... New York 8th grade C+ student = Kentucky Senior AP classes + College courses. Some states provide far superior education and I am curious what state she took these AP classes in as that will help truly gauge how challenging their education system was.

It does help a bit when you're in college, if you only take regular high school classes and going to college thinking you're going to medical school, the classes require you to study more deeper in much shorter time. But if you did AP classes, you'll have it easier for the first year or two, ofc make sure your AP classes match with your college major, say you're going after medical school then AP history won't help you much. So do AP classes? Yes. Do as much APs as possible? Don't stress yourself out because the chances are your university will ask you to take them again. There's no point taking 4 APs in one high school year and try to make all your classes APs.(My high school was an Asian populated high school, all the nerdy kids and parents always compare how many APs they have, it's so normal to see a person in my school taking 5 APs in one year, lots freshman were taking honor Algebra 2 and bragging about it)

Hey, so I am a Sophomore now, and I chose AP psychology as my first AP. I was later found out it was full since upperclsssmen had priority. I tried getting in AP human Geography, but that was also at the capacity. My school doesn’t really have a lot of staff for the abundant number of kids at the school. (680 to be exact) so I am stuck with no AP this sophomore year and I couldn’t freshman year, so I am trying to make up that one AP I can’t with all honors classes, and challenging myself he most I can do. I hope I can do two AP junior year next year and three senior year. Is it bad that I literally can’t do an AP this sophomore year because of the number of students enrolling in the same AP? Like I can’t obviously choose certain AP that I want to since they have a prerequisite for them. I hope I can get in UNC, Duke, or WashU. Last year freshman year I had a 4.3 weighted, and a 4.0 unweighted. I calculated that if this year I get all As which I will work for, I’ll get a 4.5 weighted and 4.0 unweighted or so. Any advice or thoughts to my bad situation? Thanks. PS my brother got in the AP classes that he chose, but not me. I am just unlucky… 😢
